  1. Hubby’s work suddenly became very… unsettled. The superintendent of the system “resigned” and was escorted out of the building by the board. They are threatening to do a reshuffle of head office at the end of the school year when they hope to have a new superintendent hired by. Since hubby is less than a year in his new position, he’s not sure where that puts him.

  2. Has anyone else tried the CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada Android app? I’m loving it. Previews, recaps, box scores, news, stats… I think it is all very well done.

  3. Crap joke for the day:

Jennifer was a very pretty girl. Quite a lot of young men wanted to marry her, but she was not satisfied with any of them. One day, a young man asked her to become his wife. She answered, “No, Jack, I won’t marry you. I want to marry a man who is famous, who can play music, who can tell interesting stories, who does not smoke or drink , who stays at home in the evenings and who stops talking when I’m tired of listening.”The young man got up, took his coat and went to the door, but before he left the house, he turned and said to Jennifer, “It isn’t a man you’re looking for. It’s a television.”

I like this cause I dont really know who he is. SW films worked the best with mostly young nobody or up and coming actors (as we know). Im all for a little star power here and there… but I enjoy more seeing the CHARACTER on screen as opposed to the actor. If that makes sense

  5. Olympic hockey flakeshame update:
The “Silver Streak” DVD apparently has a Long Wait.

I’ll have to wait to fulfill my debt until all of the Pryor/Wilder enthusiasts have moved on to “See No Evil, Hear No Evil” or “Stir Crazy.”

    • Enter course…

  6. You know I really like Cowboy Junkies but damn they may be the mellowest rock band ever…

    Then I remembered Mazzy Star.

    Then I took a nap.

  7. I had to get my credit history.

Over the last week, three different collections have called my number looking for someone named Janette. I don’t know who this woman is but I’m not happy she’s using my phone number to not pay her bills.

It doesn’t seem to have shown up on my credit history so I’m assuming (fingers crossed) it’s not actual identity theft but I’m still not amused.

  8. Beer news:

We’re tasting the Deadpan English Red tonight. Looking forward to it!

I spent lunch today going to the brewery supply store and got fixin’s for a Honey Rye American IPA. w00t!

  9. CW: Robocop (original)

    Peter Weller looks so young.

I don’t think I saw Robocop at the cinema but saw on a pirate VHS.

  10. Sly B and I had an excellent time with Mr. and Mrs. Lo Pan for dinner. Bummed we missed Geeks Who Drink, but we managed to salvage the evening!

  11. How many nights does a kid get to hold a blunted historical sword, get copies of your name translated into a half-dozen other languages, and sing karaoke Bohemian Rhapsody with your family? Not many.
    My kids have it good.

  12. Morning Pan, sitting at the cinema waiting for ‘The Book Thief’ to start.

I’m seeing this before I’ve finished the book, this could turn out to be a mistake.

    It’s is now 2nd March..just saying.

  13. Your crap joke for a Sunday evening:

On a plane bound for New York the flight attendant approached a blonde sitting in the first class section and requested that she move to the coach section since she did not have a first class ticket.
The blonde replied, “I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to New York, and I’m not moving.”
Not wanting to argue with a customer, the flight attendant asked the co-pilot to speak with her. He went to talk with the woman asking her to please move out of the first class section. Again, the blonde replied, “I’m blonde, I’m beautiful, I’m going to New York, and I’m not moving.”
The co-pilot returned to the cockpit and asked the captain what he should do.
The captain said, “I’m married to a blonde, and I know how to handle this.”
He went to the first class section and whispered in the blonde’s ear. She immediately jumped up and ran to the coach section mumbling to herself, “Why didn’t anyone just say so.”
Surprised, the flight attendant and the co-pilot asked what he said to her that finally convinced her to move from her seat.
The pilot replied, “I told her the first class section wasn’t going to New York.”

    • I guess I’m just an uncultured clod – I’d never heard of any of those authors, much less read anything from them. Still, considering that copyrights pre-Disney were 14 years with an option to extend for another 14 years…and are now life of the author + 70 years – it seems hard to swallow that copyrights are somehow keeping these folks from putting food on the table.

  14. I recorded the Oscars so I could go to my friends’ weekly movie night. Tonight’s movies were “2001: A Space Odyssey” and… wait for it… “Repo Man.” I got my friends’ permission to make an audio recording of our post-movie discussion and send it to them and to the Deadpan crew. I don’t know how soon I can have it edited, but it will be heading this way sometime in the near future.

  15. Hubby and I were going to go grocery shopping yesterday but decided it was too cold so opted to stay inside and hibernate instead. Of course, what that really means is I have to go out into the cold sometime today for fill the larder.

  16. CW: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

…while trying to save my energy and get this cold over with as quickly as possible. If I’m not better by tomorrow morning, I might just be using my very first sick day in the 18 months I’ve been at my current company. :frown:

  17. Yes, it case it wasn’t obvious from my Facebook post – definitely all thumbs up for The Way of Kings. Kate Reading and Michael Kramer team up on this one again for the audiobook. They did the Wheel of Time books as well and I like their style.

I’ve become a fan of quite a bit of Sanderson’s work. This Stormlight Archive is planned to be at least ten books and I think he’s proving to be a worth successor to Robert Jordan.

    • I work at a company that focuses on Human Factors and Training. So, this article is totally going out to everyone there. Thanks for the great find on this one.

  18. Your crap joke for today:

A panda bear walks into a restaurant and orders a meal. After eating he pulls out a gun, shoots the place to the ground, and runs away. Quickly the bartender runs after him yelling, “HEY YOU CAN’T DO THIS!!!” The panda turns around and yells “Yes I can. Look me up in the Encyclopedia!” So, the bartender looks up “Panda” in the Encyclopedia, and it reads “Panda: increasingly rare species of bear that can be found in the eastern part of Asia. It eats shoots and leaves.”

    • I think Reena needs a quirk. Some habit or mannerism that she has developed and done for as long as she can remember. She doesn’t even really think about it. Just does it mostly without thinking. Like throwing spilt salt over her shoulder or when she sits by a fire she piles any stones that are within arms reach in a specific way or maybe she starts to mimic the accent of others after she has been around them for a given period of time, or maybe she’s always rolling a coin through the fingers of one hand.
Something that all who know her are aware of, maybe even it annoys them slightly but she has never tried to stop it because SHE doesn’t really notice it AND it has actually (if not co-incidentally) saved her a time or two in the past or some how helped her on a quest.

      Or not.
I just think that strange, personal little quirks or habits make a character more fun.

  19. Van, have you checked out Those Who Kill yet? I watched the 1st ep (free on iTunes here at least) with my M-I-L and it was SCARY. I love Chloe Sevigny, so will continue to watch.

  20. So while I’m now warming to SHIELD, I’m still not 100% convinced. I WILL in a non-spoilery way say that I am pleased with Marvel’s continued ability to bring second and third tier comic characters to the big and small screen very very successfully.

That being said if they go where I think theyre gonna go with one of the main characters I may say meh. Or I may say hoorah.

  21. Off to visit the grandmother today. She wants to die in BC (where her second husband is buried) so my uncle found a elder care place she can stay in on the island. She leave at the end of the month so I’m helping her get her Calgary affairs in order and cleaning out her apartment since she doesn’t want to take most of the stuff with her to BC.

    • Wow – thanks, that’s the first I’d heard of this project. From anyone else, I’d think it was ambitious overreaching, doomed to collapse under its own weight – – but I think Devin can pull it off. Good for him for (at least talking about) pushing the boundaries.

  22. Stolen from a friend on Facebook:

My 8-year-old niece saw a picture of my mustache and called to compliment me on it. When I told her I was thinking about shaving it off, she said, “Please don’t, it makes you look more grown-up than you really are!”

  23. Morning Pan

Heard more gossip about the family. My grandmother is looking forward to her move but not so much about meeting my mother’s new boyfriend. I didn’t know my mother had a boyfriend but, from what my grandmother tells me, I can see why mom never mentioned anything. Apparently he’s in his twenties and going to college.

Also, my mom is mad at my grandmother for giving my uncle some money and not her. My mother does’t need the money but that’s not the point.

It must be nice to have a normal family. *sigh*

    • Im sorry could you repeat that one part with the 20’s and college thing and… and….

PS: NO ONE has a normal family. No one. 🙂

      • First thought – yeah? Did your mother make a pass at your (now spouse) when you were still dating?

Second thought – My hubby does. Well, at least as far as his parents go. He once commented that he couldn’t understand our family. When he visits his parents he has the feeling of “I’m home”, even though they no longer live where he grew up. When I see my mother, I usually get so tense the week before to the point were I almost become unbearable.

  24. Time to pay off a hockey debt. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to Krokus before, so I will watch Long Stick Goes Boom and do a play by play here to pay off Switzerland.

  25. Saw this posted on Google +:

    1. While sitting in front of your computer, lift your right foot and make clockwise circles.

    2. Now while doing that, draw the number six in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction and there’s nothing you can do about it.

  26. Your crap joke for the day:

A woman whose husband often came home drunk decided to cure him of the habit. One Halloween night, she put on a devil suit and hid behind a tree to intercept him on the way home. When her husband came by, she jumped out and stood before him with her red horns, long tail, and pitchfork.”Who are you?” he asked.”I’m the Devil,” she responded.
“Well, come on home with me,” he said, “I married your sister.”

  27. I’m sure Jack & Rhettro will take this as a sign of the coming end of days, but… “Gimmie Choco!!” was the break out hit for BABYMETAL. The YouTube video has over 2.6 million views. On top of that, they hit 34 in the iTunes metal chart.

  28. I haven’t made the meatballs yet, though I plan on doing it soon. So, instead tonight I watched Iron Sky since I had not seen it before. I know it doesn’t count. Anyway, it was pretty good. If you want to see a good B movie, I’d recommend it,though the end surprised me.

  29. If anyone here on the board isn’t an Audible member and wants to try them out for three cheap books, this is one of the best deals I’ve seen from them:

    http://local.amazon.com/national/B00IO6ELZM?ascsubtag=Q5dOnqeSEeO2ewLPAJ0VwgTEW2_m5jz3_0_0_0&t=slicinc-20&tag=slicinc-20

The plan gives you one book credit a month for each of the three months. You can cancel after that, but your account continues to give you access to the books you’ve bought. I’ve been on the two credit a month plan for about six years. At my pace, particularly with the massive 30 to 40 hour tomes put out by the big Fantasy writers, I find the two credit plan is about perfect for me. Quite frankly, if it wasn’t for Audible and my ability to listen while I drive and while I walk in the neighborhood, I’d have become a functional illiterate a long time ago.

  30. OK, Deadpanitos, Doctor Who has served as the perfect family connection/obsession point – – better than I’d ever dreamed. We’re on Smith’s final season now, and will soon be out of new material to watch. I’m soliciting you all for suggestions to fill in the void, once there’s no more new Who to view. It should be something episodic, but not more than an hour in length – – which probably restricts movie franchises.

    Some initial thoughts:
Lost. Probably too dark and adult.
Classic Doctor Who. Too hokey. I might actually go through and present the best of the classics to the kids.
Original Battlestar Galactica? Too hokey? The new series is definitely too dar and adult. And I ill never revisit those final 2 seasons.
    Something anime? Fullmetal Alchemist? Robotech?
    Samurai Jack? – Too after-school-cartoon-ish?
Any of the Clone Wars animated series? I recall that the original was excellent, but I believe it’s also been buried.

    • I really love the new clone wars show. Took about a season to wash all of its hokiness out but its pretty great. The biggest enjoyment of the show is Anakin (I know.) Its amazing what a great character he is in the show as compared to the films. Excellent voice acting and character development makes all the diff.

    • How old are the kids?

I haven’t watched Clone Wars yet, but that sounds like a good choice. Fullmetal Alchemist is awesome, but kind of dark, depending on the age of your kids. Samurai Jack was fun, though I never finished watching it. The original BSG could be fun. It is a bit cheesy, but it depends on what you and your kids can tolerate. Definitely don’t watch BSG 1980. Blech.

T Cat agrees that Lost is too adult and way too convoluted. Have you watched Firefly with the kids? Neither of us think it is too dark. Babylon 5?

For an anime movie, I highly recommend Summer Wars.

For other TV ideas, how about Once Upon a Time? Star Trek? Defiance? Star Gate?

    • I’ll second Clone Wars – definitely a great series, though I must admit, I lost track and haven’t finished it myself. While a bit weaker than the series, I would start with the Clone Wars animated movie before getting into the TV series that followed.

Avatar: The Last Airbender as well as the new Avatar: The Legend of Korra are both solid and all ages friendly shows as well.

If you want some non-fiction – How the States Got Their Shapes is a fascinating ride through history, geography, geology, politics, sociology, government and statistics…and you won’t even realize just how much you’re learning along the way. I know season one is on Amazon Prime, so I bet it’s on Netflix and Hulu as well. The series had two seasons which are done, but the History channel will have marathon runs of them on occasion.

Trying to dig through what I’ve watched…How about Farscape? I’d probably rate it a notch below the current Dr. Who in terms of intensity along with at least as much cheese.

    • If you do Stargate prepare for 15 seasons. Cause after you do SG-1 youre gonna have to do Atlantis. WSG-1 may be my fav scifi series ever. Farscape close 3rd after Warehouse 13

  31. They’ll be 12 and 10 this year. (gasp).
It’s been awhile since I’ve gone through Firefly, but I recall it being a tad sexual, at times. I’ve never seen one minute of Farscape, so that’s a good suggestion. As well as Stargate, Once Upon a Time, Defiance. . . Hmmm
Episode by episode, Star Trek has way too high of a crap to quality factor. Regardless of the series. (Sorry, Trekkies). I fizzled out on B5 (sorry, B5ers). . . I’m not sure if they’d make it.

How States Got Their Shapes also sounds pretty cool, although we’d have to get past the initial bout of eye-rolling from the kids.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Keep em coming!

    • Not sure of the availability in the US, but the animated series ‘The Mysterious Cities of Gold’ and ‘Ulysses 31’ are worth a look. Both have a story arcs.

The effects might be hokey, but there is also Blake’s 7, which may come as a surprise as how influential it was.

    • A different anime show that you might want to consider: “Space Brothers”. It is set in the near future and is about an older brother becoming an astronaut while his younger brother is already one. The story jumps back and forth between their younger years and the current time. It’s a daytime show so it is already meant to be family friendly. There’s 96 episodes, so you have plenty to watch. I really like the show.

    • I’d have to second the whole “to much sexy, funtime” with Firefly. Between Enora and her job, and Jane being in his bunk, and Kalie getting nailed in the engine room (when she first meets the Captian) or the episode where they come to save the brothal or … there is just a lot of adult stuff.

I was thinking Farscape for a while but on reflection, seems like there was a lot of sexual tension/overtones.

If you haven’t been watching “Agents of Sheild” that is fairly tame. Some discussion of this person having sex with that person and a fair bit of hand to hand combat, but (sadly) pretty mild by today’s standards.

Have you considered old episodes of the BBC “Top Gear”? Yes it IS centered around cars … but the antics of the three co-stars are amazingly stoog-esque. They’re always crashing or blowing up something. Kids love that sort of thing.

  32. I love how Person of Interest will occasionally take facts you already know, and then change the whole thing around in a surprising way. 🙂

    • I don’t think I ever made it to that one myself, so I can’t comment. Of course, there’s a’plenty of 80’s toy commercials..er, cartoons that we grew up with. Though I’m afraid of ever trying to watch such things again and ruin fond childhood memories with a 40 year old minds perceptions.

  33. Van, I must say that I’m enjoying the #100DaysofMediocrity photos in your FB page. I can’t explain why, it’s just felt fun and random.

Have you given an explanation somewhere, and I just missed it?

  34. Jack Mangan– harsh, dude.

Vanamonde– I think Jack and I are both looking forward to some quirkiness from a Wes Anderson movie. 🙂

  35. Finally(!) acquired a bottle of the Iron Maiden beer. The ESB on the label had me a little worried, but it was actually a pretty enjoyable, easy drink. A pleasant surprise, especially on a beer I bought just for the label.

  42. Also, I’m really really angry with Avery Brewing for making it entirely too hard to buy a gift for my boyfriend. I literally sent someone into the stores of Colorado and he still did not return with the brew.

I’m just going to cough up the cost of shipping unless we’ve decided on a meetup date where I know I’ll be traveling to Colorado myowndamnself.

I haven’t seen anything solid yet. Did I miss it?

      • Because *I* can’t get any. I can’t even find a place where I can order it online. Also, I emailed and they said they’d be returning to Arizona. I found a brewhouse that’s supposed to have it and contacted them. I’ll call when they open. My friend tried 3 different liquor stores in the Boulder area and none of them had it so I don’t know. He was doing me a favor by looking – I wasn’t going to make him go out of his way.

  43. I suppose it’s time to crank up the monkey again. I think it had been generally agreed that we’d MMMmmmeetup sometime in Septemberish. We just need to choose a weekend and commit.

    • My former boss (from the recent big change in December) is actually moving to Denver and expecting a baby, so, either way, I’ll be going to Denver at some point this year to visit him. If it coincides with the mmmmmeetup, that’s a bonus!

  44. I feel that we should work around Van and Bunny’s schedules since they have to shell out the most. Any one else is a bonus. And if it turns out CO isnt feasible then so be it.

  45. Van, CP: Billy Connolly on last week’s WTF. He said the 3 drunkest cities are Liverpool, Newcastle, and Glasgow. True about Newcastle?

  48. Your crap joke for the day:

An elderly couple were on a cruise and it was really stormy. They were standing on the back of the boat watching the moon, when a wave came up and washed the old woman overboard. They searched for days and couldn’t find her, so the captain sent the old man back to shore with the promise that he would notify him as soon as they found something. Three weeks went by and finally the old man got a fax from the boat. It read: “Sir, sorry to inform you, we found your wife dead at the bottom of the ocean. We hauled her up to the deck and attached to her butt was an oyster and in it was a pearl worth $50,000 . . please advise.” The old man faxed back: “Send me the pearl and re-bait the trap.”

  49. I just got a perplexing call.

I went in for a mamagram a short bit ago. The imaging centre just called me. They want to do another mamagram and want me to have an ultrasound as well. I have a call in to my doctor to see if I should be worried.

  50. I signed up to take part in a clinical drug trial today.
    Cholesterol lowering. Maybe.
I might get the “human monoclonal antibody” or I might get the placebo.

While they were going through the possible side effects I ask them what superpowers I might get.
They seemed confused, as though somehow I was the first to ask this. So to fill the awkward silence I told them that I wasn’t picky, “Suprehero, Supervillian … at this point I’m open to either really.”

    • My results: “Congratulations. That’s spiffing. You’re not remotely sarcastic.”

You’re entirely free of the blight of sarcasm. When you say stuff, people really believe you, because you’re such a swell person. There’s not even the slightest chance that all of the stuff you’re saying is a load of old hooey, or that you have such a dry sense of humor people often walk away from conversations with you shaking their heads as they mentally replay what you just said to make sure they heard it right.

You’re a straight up guy (or gal), what you say is what you mean. You are pure of heart, and sound of vision and everyone loves you. I’m not even kidding. They ALL do. We do too. You’re AWESOME.

  51. “Oh well done. That’s amazing. You’re a bit sarcastic.”

That’s, like, such a great way to spend your time, all muttering under your breath and rolling your eyes as if everything—literally everything—is too much of a bother for you. It’s like everything is kind of lame and it would physically pain you to join in, so, what’s the point? Far better to just sort of stand on the edges, tweeting about the lameness. Which is lame.

The worst for you is when sincere people want to talk about themselves and their feelings. I mean that’s just so delightful. It’s like a real honor and stuff, yeah? All the unburdening and whatnot? Bring it on, I say, BRING. IT. ON.

    Not.

  52. Have you guys seen the “Selfies with Crack” photos the guy took at the Magic: The Gathering tournament? I didn’t post the link here, but it’s really pretty hilarious.

There seems to be this nerdrage backlash, with people calling the guy a bully.

    • Yeah, I saw it. While it was amusing, I thought it as also a bit dickish of the guy. It’s one thing to take stupid pictures of you and your friends, but of other unsuspecting people…. Anyway, he’s free to do it, but he shouldn’t expect to be free from the consequences either.

      • I think it was done with a Candid Camera sense of fun and silliness. The ass cracks in question were not singled out or called out by name, so I’m filing it in the “get over yourself” file. Maybe I’m just an asshole.

    • Also, kudos to you for not posting the link. There is too much out there with people posting to things that they find repulsive (and I get that you don’t find it repulsive but understand that others do) and wind up adding to the hits for the person creating the blatantly controversial content that was established just to create hits. Win 1 for them, 0 for us. Thanks for not contributing to the pattern.

  53. Morning Pan

I’m sad. There’s a squirrel in front of our house that was run over by a car. Now I know squirrels are our version of rats (Alberta doesn’t have any actual rats), but they are cute and I don’t like to see them dead.

  54. I am so glad it’s Friday. Hubby made me promise not to do any work this weekend. He is not happy that I’ve been putting in full days and the occasional weekend for the last few weeks. (I am only suppose to be working part time)

I told him it’s Amazon’s fault and, while he does understand, that doesn’t mean he has to be happy about it.

  55. Ok this is a few days late… but how.. HOW do the Cafucks go into the 3rd period AT HOME against the Islanders up 3-0 and lose 7-4. HOW?!?!?!?! Twas amazing.

  56. I hit the point in my graduate education where all I had left to do for a PhD was my dissertation a little more than 5 years ago. There is a 5 year time limit at my university and I have missed it. Just sent my faculty adviser my official “I’m out” statement. The reason for going through that difficult statement is that I had promised myself a change of internet identity having something to do with “Dr.” when I completed the PhD. Usedhair has served me well, but it’s time to move on or at least add something new. As luck would have it a new name has come my way, I love it, and it isn’t taken anywhere else (that I can find) on the internet. From this day forth, I shall be know as The Roaming Asshat.

  57. Hey there everyone. My wife is working on a graphic for my new name. I’ll make sure to update my picture when she finishes it.

  58. Finished replaying Mass Effect for probably the 8th time. This time as femShep. I’m going to finish the trilogy with character. 🙂

  59. Today’s movie is called Rewind.

    The DVR write up: Pilot

After that informative write up, I did a quick search on IMDB. Apparently, this was the pilot of a TV show that never actually aired. Let’s see if they were right in cancelling this show before it even started

  60. Ok, I have an issue. Without sounding wrong, they a sending a dark skinned person back to 1929, with a pretty girl and another mLe soldier. Mixed races weren’t quite that chummy back then.

Let’s see how they handle that

  61. Shows over.

Here are my thoughts. It had potential but, even if it made it to be a series, I still don’t think it would last.

It certainly ended on a cliffhanger, though

    • Yeah, there is a small publishing company here in Calgary that is a little sketchy when it comes to author royalties. Which we find strange. If you want to keep putting out quality books, PAY YOUR AUTHORS!!! After all, if you don’t pay authors, there’s a good chance you won’t get manuscripts… at least, ones that are worth publishing. In most contracts, there’s usually a clause where an author can audit their sales/royalties but I don’t know of any that do. That being said, I make sure ours are up to date and pristine but then, as we all know, I can be a little anal that way.

  62. It’s a good thing I can’t stay mad at the Bunny. Searching for Seven Days on IMDB lead me through a wasteland of 90’s sci-fi memories.

SeaQuest is over 20 years old now, btw.

  63. Your crap joke for the day:

NEW Sex Position called the RAGING BULL.
1st get your girl in doggy style, & slide in real deep. Now Lean Forward and Wrap you arms around her Reall Tight! Here’s the BULL part… Put your lips near her Ear, and whisper another girls name and see how long you can stay on ….

  64. Hey Panites,

It’s rare that I come to you sans dick and fart jokes, but Amazon has an awesome new program called AmazonSmile. If you use Amazon a lot it can really benefit a charity of your choice. I come asking that you consider using AmazonSmile to benefit one near to my heart – The Rowan Tree foundation.

Amazon will donate a percent of each purchase. Go here if youre interested. All you have to do is make it your Amazon homepage. Thats it. Thanks!

  65. Holy christ, its taken a while but I’m sooooo glad Agents of SHIELD finally kicks ass.

And since its just me a talkin…. Ima say sayonara

  66. Good morning.

I’d like to announce that tomorrow I’m leaving on my first ever business trip. Like a grown-up, I will fly, dine, and sleep at someone else’s expense.

I’ll also be touring the campuses of Facebook, Twitter, and Google.

My promotion seems to have some unexpected perks. This brings me joy.

I thought I’d share the happy with the :pan: (do I remember the codes?)

  67. EssBee: Thank you for the comics. The USPS did their best to destroy the package, but the comics were surprisingly not much harmed. 🙂

  68. Told by Archie Fisher, who I saw in Glasgow last night.

Somebody asked his daughter (who has perfect pitch):

“What tunings does your Dad use for his guitar?”

    She replied:

“He has two tunings, in and out…”

  69. Me & mine caught up on SHIELD last night – loving it.

I caught up on The Walking Dead this morning – eek! They’re killing it this season, IMO. Love what they’re doing with all the characters.

I finished True Detective. Liked it; found it terrifying.

My MIL and I are watching Those Who Kill – extremely scary.

    /SB watches too much TV
/there’s more, but I don’t want you guys to know just how much I watch

    • We are still a few episodes behind in SHIELD. It’s entertaining.

The WD has been great this season. The last episode with the girl we dubbed as Fruit Loops was excellent. I’ve bought the 2 massive compilations and intend on reading them during the off season.

      I haven’t watched anything else you’ve listed.

I’m a couple of episodes behind on Person of Interest, but I really like this show.

Most of the rest of the shows I watch are anime.

    • Still got WD S3 and what;s been aired of S4 to watch.

Still got the final series of Smallville to watch.

S8 and 9 of Supernatural to watch.

The latter of part of S3 and all of S4 of Being Erica to watch.

S4 of Boardwalk Empire to watch.

I can’t count the episodes of Vampire Diaries and The Listener I’ve yet to watch.

Still haven’t finished S1 of the US version of House of Cards.

      Feel better Essbee?

  70. I wish people would stop calling Rogue an “iconic” brewery. Its just extremely overrated IMO. Same goes for New Belgium.

    #lopanbeersnob

    • Hopefully why they need the wanted prisoner is more than he’s just her Dad, as at the moment it just looks dumb as he’s such a liability.

    • Brilliant marketing on her part.
Up until 24hrs ago I wouldn’t have known if she was still even alive.
Somehow she gets coverage on her (apparently) way-out thoughts on this matter and since then her name is all over the internet/blogosphere.

In the celebrity world, the only thing worse then negative press is NO press.

    • I’ve read some of his short stories, although I know he was well-liked and respected in the SF community.

I recall that for years, his author bio stated, “Lucius lives near a strip mall, but NOT FOR LONG!”

  71. Insomnia chachacha

So Ive been listening to the Jesus Lizard’s catalog as well as seminal SF punk/sludge pioneer Flipper. I highly recommend ‘Goat’ by Jesus Lizard and ‘Generic Flipper’ by Flipper. Neither are easy listens but are wholly satisfying.

  72. CW: The After (pilot)

If it turns out they are all in Hell I’m going to hunt down Chris Carter and blow a raspberry at him…

  73. Morning Pan

Hubby is making me take the day off. I’ve been putting in ten and eleven hour days and some time over the weekends for the past few weeks. It’s starting to show and hubby is not impressed.

I turned on my computer before he left this morning and he said, “You better not be getting ready to work on the computer.” Since I promised I won’t, I think I’m going to play some Grim Dawn

  74. Hockey Debt Bonus time. I will watch the Czech movie “Toys in the Attic” and provide a play by play. It may take longer than the movie run time because I will be balancing it with work. I love when I get the rare opportunity to do Excel sheet stuff as I can get away with divided attention.

  75. The cat puts on a ski mask but leaves his tail sticking out the back of the jacket. Because that’s not a dead giveaway.

  76. Overall: Not ground breaking, but far better than the crap we make for kids over here. Can’t help but think that there a lot of references I missed out on.

  77. So…. I was planning on posting a new Unshow this week, but I just ran out of time. We’re in for an exciting weekend round here, so I probably still won’t have time until Monday.

Apologies in advance for all of the scrolling.

  78. Well, i mowed through S1 Orphan Black in about a day.

Every episode (& every clone) was exciting. Cosima is my girl crush & Allison is truly a complex character. She is great.

    Bravo, Tatiana Maslany.

  79. … waiting … waiting … waiting

I am waiting for someone to call and tell me where to come and pick-up something that I will need at 7am tomorrow. My eyes are sooo tired.

    … waiting … waiting …

    • You know, my memories of the 70’s have grown a bit fuzzy, and I was never that into the show as I recall anyway…but I didn’t remember Starsky and Hutch being a BBC made show.

  80. Your crap joke for the day:

A young man at this construction site was bragging that he could outdo anyone based on his strength. He especially made fun of one of the older workman. After several minutes, the older worker had enough. “Why don’t you put your money where you mouth is?” he said. “I’ll bet a week’s wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over to the other building that you won’t be able to wheel back.” ..”You’re on, old man,” the young man replied. “Let’s see what you’ve got.”
The old man reached out and grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles. Then nodding to the young man, he said with a smile, “All right. Get in.”

  81. So, silly hubby…

I like to plan our dinners a week at a time. I decide what I’m going to make for the week and we shop on Sunday mornings accordingly. Last night, I ask hubby what days next week he will be working late so I know not to plan dinners for two those days. He looks at me and says, “I’m off for the next two weeks.”
    Me: “What?! Why?”
    Him: “It’s spring break”
Me: And you were going to tell me…when?

I love my hubby dearly and am happy he’s home but it still would have been nice to know. :silly:

  82. You would think that, after all these years, I would learn that when a software program asks you to let it upgrade to it’s latest version, to just say NO. JUST – SAY – NO!!!!!!

    damn wordpress to hell

  83. If there are any Deadpanites out there with WordPress experience who might be able to guide me off of this ledge, I could sure use some help.
I upgraded to the newest version and now I can’t log on to my admin page. The site is still there and working.
I was able to sign on initially, as I used the Admin page to hit the WP upgrade button but after that it wouldn’t let me log back on. I can use the “lost password” button to reset the password but then using that password just loops me back to the sign-in screen (using a wrong password gives me a message saying “wrong password”.

I can find no answers on line and my passwords won’t work for the WP forums. sadness 🙁

  84. Hello, Pan. I just got caught up on all the recent Deadpan posts.

Jack, Tiffany – Congratulations on the wonderful news!

I fulfilled my hockey debt for Slovania yesterday:

    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10103038254390677&set=gm.10153946951785585&type=1

(Roaming Asshat: On Facebook, I right-clicked on the photo and clicked “Copy Link Location.”)

While I was at Costco yesterday, I also bought beef to make beef stroganoff for one of my other hockey debts. I will probably get to that tonight or Tuesday night.

  85. Just back from seeing “Divergent”.
It is probably the post-apocolyptic/scifi version of “Twilght”.

Seems like every time the film was about to kick into “Action adventure” or “Scifi” high gear … they throw on the brakes and add a scene clearly aimed at 14 year old girls. Meh.
Also, as I had not read the book … I somehow got the impression that our heroine was 13 and the love interest was like in his early 20’s so all of those scenes just came across feeling creepy.

Afterwards someone told me that she is supposed to be 16 and he 18. Yeh. Okay.

So given that, I score it as basic movie fodder. Mildly entertaining.
Worth matinée price or maybe just wait to watch it on Netflix/Amazon.

  86. As much as I despise Courtney Hole, ‘Live Through This’ is an amazing album. One that still holds up 20 years later.

    That’s right…20

  87. What a whirlwind-y, fun, fulfilling, relaxing, thrilling, surprising, life-altering weekend!

Thank you, to all of you, for the kind words for me and Jack. You guys are truly a uniquely awesome, amazing bunch of folks. Mr. Mangan and I are so thrilled you call us your friends.

Now, get over here and let’s all give each other a Pannite Group Hug!
