  1. Hey Pan

Hubby still at home. Says he has meetings at our end of the city so he doesn’t have to leave as early. He’s currently playing Forza 4. I think he’s addicted.

  2. Hats of to JOe for the hot Halloween injection into the Deadpan. It’s ALIVE! To bad I missed my opprotunity get my segment into the Jack-O-Mangan.

  3. Since I can’t update the official Show Notes, I’ll paste ’em here. Thanks, as always, to The Energizer Bunny for providing these (she outdid herself this week!):

  4. Gotta love Halloween. Between now and Sunday my DVR is set to record a half dozen B horrors. Now I have to watch some so I have space to record whatever comes out on Monday. I promise I won’t play by play all of them.

  5. So here’s what I don’t understand. A family, in a post apocalyptic world. They are now on foot, having lot their vehicle to people with machine guns and the dad allows the teenage girl to stop at a creek to shave her legs. Really? The world is ending but at least you legs look good.

  6. Hi all.
Thanks to all who could play along with me on this weeks DP ep!

Can you tell I like Halloween πŸ˜‰

I’ve been getting things set up for days now. Stressed because I have a thing I have to go to Sunday night … so I will have to do my Halloween run through on Saturday.

I’m also going to have to wait till Saturday to deploy a lot of things because of forcasted rain but at least I have my fog piping laid deployed and the smoke generator platform mounted up in the trees. I also got some of my lighting up, my grave dug and the witches cauldron set up (as well as a section of fog piping run underneath it.)

Tomorrow I work on speaker cages (for mounting them up in the trees), getting the gells on the porch lights and decorating the inside of the house.

    Heh.

  7. You know, this wasn’t a bad movie. Yes it had a few scenes hat made you go huh (see above) but it was stll ok. Far a $150,000 budget it did ok

  8. Well played this round, Justa Joe.

I had to fire up the “Nightmare Before Christmas” soundtrack after the episode. This is why I have an iPod big enough to carry all my music.

Now going to browse Amazon for more Oingo Boingo. Dead Man’s Party never gets old, but the version Joe played was a different recording than I have.

  9. Oh, and regarding the BBC thing, I’m number 3,856,832,685th of those alive, an the 78,093,683,000th since “the beginning”.

Which is interesting. I thought I had read somewhere a few years back that around the time we hit 6 billion that there were move people alive at that time than all the people who had lived and died before. Apparently not.

  10. Today’s movie is The Road

The DVR write up: an affecting and profoundly moving meditation on the power of humanity. John hillcoat’s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s best seller follows a father and his son as they wander through a wasteland in the aftermath of the apocalypse

Side note: why am I the only person on deadpan that seems to not of heard of either the movie or book before?

  11. Just watched the first Ep of this season’s “Walking Dead”.
IMHO – it is still 30 minutes worth of good show diluted into a 50 minute time slot.

Guess I’ll wade through EP#2 as well.

  12. Tonight we have our They Might Be Giants date. Not sure who is opening, but I think it is all ages. At 38, all that really means is that if we wanted to overpay for drinks we’d need to cramp into an upstairs bar at First Ave. We get to save money both because we want to and need to…

  13. Apparently Gold Motel is opening. I have been going to First Ave for over 20 years.

    *Sigh*

At least I can’t remember it as the Greyhound station.

  14. The infobox on Gold Motel’s wiki page lists for genres: “It was a note-perfect version of how I would want the hosts to respond if I were the mysterious “Hector.” (Note: I’m not)”

    • Should be some of their spookier stuff mixed in, I’d gather. Nothing like the Great Coultonic Convergence (Coulton singing “First of May” on the first of May), but good times…

Darcy is going to be dressed awesomely. I’m sticking with a t-shirt, choosing Buffy Between the Lines, though nobody has commented on it ever just yet…

  15. Long day of Halloween prep and other stuff.

Now I am having my first beer from the “Smashing Pumpkin Ale” stash. For a “novelty” home brew it’s really pretty good!

Now to go carve my last pumpkin.

  16. TMBG show was great.

Show could have gone a little deeper on older albums but still top-notch. Best “Ana Ng” I’ve ever heard from them…

Gold Motel was def. inspired/heavily influenced by New Pornographers.

    • The Lady and The Tiger from TMBG new album is one of those songs that I just seem to have to play over and over and over again.

“Do you surmise it’s wise, to have laser beams emitting from your eyes?”

They come to Orlando in February. Hoping that my financial and free time situations fall into place so I can go see them.

  17. Well, off to bed. Moving into second disc of the first series of “Hex.” Not sure if second series never made it to disc in US or if Netflix just doesn’t have it, but so far not too concerned about not seeing it. First disc was a whole lot of titillation (plus a wee bit of tit).

Also suffers from having an absolutely gorgeous blonde as a misfit who the popular kids don’t like/won’t date.

It will have to improve if I’m going to bother with third disc of series one…

  18. So I was next to one of these “Halloween Shops” as a car pulls up and 3 eastern looking women in the long black Burke and head scarfs get out. Then a flock of small giggling/chattering children tumble out and the whole group heads excitingly into the Halloween shop.

I add this to my experience at my local Chinese buffet where there is always has a lot of Spanish speaking, construction workers there at lunch even though the adjoining store is an authentic, Mexican restaurant.

For over a hundred years now it has worked this way. The parents come here with their culture but adapt, wanting to try the new things available to them. Their kids though, race to embrace what ever the current “American” culture is. It works. It has for some time.

I just feel like this nation has somehow forgotten that.

  19. Star Trek 2, this evening. The ear scene is less damaging than it was when I was young. The death and funeral is still pretty moving (especially when reminded of a past use of it on Deadpan).

And holy crap, did JJ Abrams borrow a lot from this movie to make the new one.

    Good night :Khaaaaaan:

  20. ATTN JustaJ0e:

    Spotted on FB:

    Joe Fiore
Is Just-A-Joe on here? (sorry, don’t know your real name). Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your Halloween mix segment. My fiance and I were talking about Halloween mixes just last week, so it hit close to home.

You and Dan Shaurette like this.
Jack Mangan Krazy Joe: Justa J0e is not eating the FB Soylent Green, but consider the message passed along. Thanks for listening, amigo. We need to get you on an episode soon.

    Goodnight :no, really:

      • Hey J0e….

Krazy Joe here — I was just making a Halloween Playlist myself the other day. I grabbed some of the tracks you played. I wasn’t familiar with a lot of them, but they were fun.

I was trying to find the Jerry Goldsmith main title theme from Psycho II. The Psycho II soundtrack is out of print and all I can get is a weird electronic version of I-tunes store.

I did find the original GOldsmith version on Youtube, however.

  21. Saw In Time over the weekend. It was ok but I wouldn’t go much beyond that. It certainly not what I was looking for in the concept.

  22. Today I’m going to watch two movies. I need to make space on my DVR.

The first movie is called Insidious. The second will be The Rite. Probably won’t do actual play by plays but thought I’d give you a heads up in case I make the occasional strange comment

  23. Sim about a third into this movie. So far it’s showing a movie can be creepy and freaky with no killing, no blood, and very few and understated special effects

  24. I liked this movie. I admit, the last third gat a little campy but I would still recommend it for those that like these type of movies. It didn’t rely on blood and gore, things going bump in the night.

  25. Well I live with snakes and lizards and other things that go bump in the nite.

Its the same its the same in the whole wide world.

    Bah E Bah bah

  26. Hail, Pan.

After the trick or treating, the family sat to watch last night’s recording of Large Dangerous Rocket Ships.

A show about crazy rockets hosted by Kari from Mythbusters. SO FULL OF WIN!

  27. Listened to part 1 of the Drabblecast’s story “Mongoose” on the drive in. I recommend it. I remember when I was a kid, TBS used to show the 1953 War of the Worlds movie as sort of a tradition. Didn’t see it on last night. *dissappointed*

  28. I forgot to mention Real Steel. . . Took the kids on Sunday.

-Why is it such a Hollywood trope to show dads as neglectful shits, whose hearts of gold will show through by the movie’s end?
-Thank god this movie was made in 2011 with Hugh Jackman, rather than 1991 with Stallone or Van Damme.
-Definitely a fun movie. . . to see with kids.

  29. Well…. there’s some PG language, but it’s mainly just giant robots beating each other to pieces.
The scenes where people get beat up aren’t really graphic. It’s not a must-see.

  30. quick catch up post:

the anime transformation of historical figures into girls is crazy. Is that pink teddy bear supposed to be Excalibur for King Arthur? And yet it seems to be rich in comedic material.

    J0e: cool pics

Everyone who isn’t feeling well: I hope you feel better soon.

Anyone I missed: hi… how about a beer?

  31. You know, I really hope that Steve Jobs was too sick to have much involvement in iOS5, cause it is utter crap.

I’ve been with the iPod and iTunes for a good six years now, and never has a version of either program given me such grief.

  32. Funny, as Van was posting the suggestion to nuke and reload my iPod, that’s what it was in the middle of doing.

We’ll see if things work out better today.

  33. Time to bring the Pan down.

    http://www.kdvr.com/news/kdvr-gay-couple-targets-of-hate-crime-at-home-20111031,0,1913134.story

Realize that Parker is an overall affluent and wealthy suburb of Denver. The “best” part is that their HOA is probably in denial that its one of their own making the threats, yet it demands that the couple take down their own home made anti-anti gay signs.

Pretty sure that HOA’s are the work of Satan wrapped up in Hitler inside of Pol Pot.

    • Lovely. And common. When I was in grad school, someone painted “faggot” on my truck. I thought it’d be obvious that truck = dyke, but there’s no accounting for reasoning in bigotry.

I really wish my girl had not called herself “the white Rosa Parks”.

I had a severe homophobic experience at work last week. It’s got me down, and I’m having a hard time coming up with a healthy way to respond.

    • It is sad and pathetic that people act like this. And they use all sorts of ridiculous excuses to justify their hate. I wouldn’t be surprised if the perpetrators were on the HOA.

Fuck em. Their little minds aren’t worth worrying about. Hopefully the police are capable of doing their jobs. Though there are some cops that are just as bad as these hate-filled jackwads.

    • I have to add a little balance to the concept of HMA’s in general.

I once owned/lived in a condo in a small complex. 2 buildings and like 24 units. I actually became the head of the Association because no one else wanted to do it. I didn’t want to do it either but someone had to arrange for yard/building maintenance and stuff like that and since it was my first ever place I owned I really didn’t want to see the place fall apart.

So, we had this one owner who turned out to be INSANE.
One day she built this large Plexiglas shack around her porch. Not a kit. It was like pieces of scrap wood and pieces of Plexiglas.
Suddenly the other owners found value in the fact that we had a homeowners association to deal with this.

When ever I hear someone whine about a HMA I want to remind them that the HMA is there to protect THEM and their investment from insane or douche-bag neighbors because there is a good chance at least one of them will be!

Also, when you buy a piece of property that comes under the control of a HMA the rules are VERY clearly stated to you before you buy the property. If you don’t agree with HMA rules against chicken coops in the front yard or being allowed to put up 50 foot tall American flag in your front yard illuminated 24 hours a day by airport searchlights … DON’T BUY PROPERTY in that neighborhood.
If the HMA has a bad rule, it’s easy enough to change. Just get the majority of the neighbors to vote it out and that rule is gone! If the majority of neighbors don’t agree that you SHOULD be allowed to have 3 or 4 wrecked cars up on blocks in your front yard … well, then maybe you should re-asses the merits of that landscaping idea.

All of that being said, I don’t like having to live under the rules of an HMA or dealing with neighbors who want to build a shed in their front yard to cook meth so I chose to buy a place that DIDN’T have an HMA AND had trees between me and the neighbors.

      • BTW – my defense of the concept of HOA’s should in no way be considered in support of the hate perpetrated on these Mrs. Ladies.

In fact, a properly functioning HOA should be offering a reward for the arrest of the perps who did the vandalism. From a strictly financial sense, that sort of hi-profile hate crime REALLY brings down a neighborhood’s property values and can only be combated by well publicized actions by a neighborhood shown to rise up and speak out against such things in order to prove that this is an anomaly that the community won’t tolerate and will be swiftly dealt with.

  34. So apparently there is a Vestal Ave. in Wanette, OK. The only way this could be funnier in my mind is if all the churches were located on it.
