    • We have/love one of those as well! We bought it when we couldn’t figure out how to “work” the DVD player with the game controller.

  1. Surprisingly, the new “The Thing” movie is getting generally favorable reviews. Still not going to spend the money to see it in the theater though.

  2. Ram, CPU, Motherboard, Fan. All have arrived. Upgrades will commence tomorrow.

    Many games await the power of this fully armed and operational PC coming soon.

  3. Sometimes I watch LostRalph while he’s reading his daily dose of :pan: and he just sits there and giggles and giggles and giggles.

    He’s so cute.

    You all make him laugh.

  4. I’m upgrading my rig in preparation for Skyrim and Mass Effect 3. I may also pick up Battlefield 3 at some point as well.

    My current rig (minus the video card that I upgraded for Dragon Age 2 a few months ago) is about 3 and a half years old. My Core 2 Duo E8400 has served me well enough, but is showing its age.

    My friend let my borrow Fallout 3 to give me a taste of the gaming style to expect from Skyrim (as opposed to the more story driven style of Bioware). I finished Fallout 3 last weekend and decided that, while certainly different, Skyrim is probably a game I will enjoy. I should certainly get plenty out of it until Mass Effect 3 rolls around next March.

    While I know console get all the love in the gaming world, there’s still plenty of quality gaming available for us PC folks.

  5. “WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama said on Friday the United States will fulfill its pledge to pull troops out of Iraq by the end of the year.”

    I’ll believe it when I believe it.

  6. If the rapture does happen today, shouldn’t we get a plan together? I think we should do some strategic looting first. Any other thoughts?

  7. Well, to show my confidence in the prediction, I shall be building my PC upgrade pretty confident that I’ll get to play Skyrim on it.

    Scored a deal on an SSD drive, so I’ll be shutting down for a clean install.

  8. The worst part of getting to know someone and beginning to like them, is that it makes me wish I was a better person than I actually am.

  9. Hey! Did you guys realize there is this baseball thigy on?
    Just channel surf a little and you’ll find this thing that’s a lot like hockey but not as bladey and with more color in it.
    … and I mean that in oh, so many ways.

  10. Today, we’ve canned 31 pints of carrots and 20 pints of beets – 10 pickled and 10 not pickled, aka good.

    Yawn.

    Oh yeah – I was homecoming queen in 1989.

  11. Power restored on the new rig. So far, test score are impressive and “seat of the pass” response suggests a cigarette may be in order…and I don’t smoke.

    Restoration of programs and data is proceeding pretty smoothly. Itunes worked without a hitch and I’m restoring my Photoshop catalog now.

    Pictures and music are my two big piles of data. So, those catalogs are staying on the hard drive, while the SSD serves for the OS and actual programs.

    Apple could stand to learn a thing about making the move more seamless, but I was able to find enough info and a few tricks of my own to get it to work.

    Of course, it not the issue of keeping the files, it’s making sure the databases that house all the tags, playlists, counts, etc are now pointing to the new location.

  12. If I haven’t said it before, this year has been one of the best years ever for anime. There have been a lot of really excellent shows.

  13. Well, just as I was saying the restore was going smoothly, the Photoshop restore crapped out at 90%.

    Gave it another go and it has now come through.

    One lesson for tonight, eschew any nifty motherboard vendors custom software that claims to boost your LAN and USB speeds. My download speed was crippled with the software installed, and the USB connection was unstable.

  14. I took my telescope out for the first time in a long time tonight. With our low humidity and cool temperatures, it made for awesome viewing conditions. I could clearly see 4 of Jupiter’s moons tonight.

  15. So I completed “The Wire” this weekend. Possibly the best show TV has ever seen. Hype like that and a slow start to season 1 had me doubting in the beginning, but I’m so glad I stuck it out and watched all 5 seasons.

    The characters, the stories, the settings – – the authenticity, the tragedy, the immersion. I’ll miss it.

    Breaking Bad is next.

  16. Today’s movie: Blood Creek

    The DVR writeup: in this mind bending horror film, brothers Victor and Evan discover a nazi experiment in the occult, and the two decide to fight back when Victor is kidnapped while camping near Town Creek and reappears year later.

    Remember, it’s a “mind bending” flick

  17. Hey everyone! We’ve enjoyed a quiet day off of work today. I made a big pot of sauce to put the glut of tomatoes we had to use or lose.

    Now Sly B is at rehearsal and I’m CW: Homeland E3(?) – last night’s.

  18. My son attempted to tell me about the Confederacy and he called them “Canadians”. I laughed for roughly 30 minutes before I decided, begrudgingly, I should correct him.

  19. To help you get your Halloween on –

    Dracula’s Kiss is a haunting cocktail for Halloween parties. The drink creates two layers: the bottom is red with grenadine and the top is black with cola. Add spiders to the drink or hang them on the glass for a ghoulish finishing touch. Both Smirnoff and Effen make great black cherry vodkas.
    Ingredients:

    * 1 oz black cherry vodka
    * 1/2 oz grenadine
    * cola
    * maraschino cherries for garnish

    Preparation:

    1. Coat the bottom of a highball glass with grenadine.
    2. Add ice and vodka.
    3. Fill with cola.
    4. Garnish with cherries.

  20. Not sweet enough?

    Try this one –

    No ghosts in this house, at least not tonight. The Ghostbuster is a fun, simple, neat cocktail that is full of wonderful flavors. The drops of Irish cream create a ghost-like figure in the middle of the glass. A great novelty for Halloween.
    Yield: 1 Drink
    Ingredients:

    * 1 oz peach schnapps
    * 1 oz melon liqueur
    * 3-5 drops of Irish cream liqueur

    Preparation:

    1. Pour the peach schnapps and melon liqueur into a cocktail shaker with ice.
    2. Shake well.
    3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
    4. Add the Irish cream drop by drop into the center of the drink.

  21. Still not interested? How about this –

    Do you have any Skeletons in Your Closet? Admit it, we all do. But now there’s a variation of the Margarita that takes it a step further. This is a great fruit Margarita on the rocks that’s a little out of the ordinary with DeKuyper’s Island Blue Tropical Schnapps, pineapple and mango. This bright green cocktail is great for your Halloween party and will likely turn into one of your new favorites.
    Ingredients:

    * 1 1/2 parts Hornitos Plata Tequila
    * 1 part DeKuyper Island Blue Tropical Schnapps
    * 1 part pineapple juice
    * 1 part mango juice

    Preparation:

    1. Rim a margarita glass with salt.
    2. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
    3. Shake well.
    4. Strain over ice into the prepared margarita glass.

  22. And, all hail! The authorities are out and about with their noisy trucks fumigating the mosquito plague that engulfed the Houston area this weekend.

    We get the skeeters pretty bad during the summer, but, the long dry spell, the heavy rain a few weeks ago, and the warmup in the last week unleashed a pent up horde of them.

    I’m convinced more than ever that God really really doesn’t want Rick Perry for president. Of course, that means that we’ll probably be stuck with him.

  23. Kind of down tonight. A friend just told me he’s got testicular cancer. It’s been caught very early and he’s young, so there should be no problems. Still.

  24. Oooo. I have a Halloween drink that I just tried last night.

    candy corn-infused vodka

    1 1/2 cups vodka
    1 cup candy corn
    3/4 cup pineapple juice
    Ice
    • 1 To make candy corn-infused vodka, mix vodka and candy corn in jar; seal tightly. Let stand at least 4 hours.
    • 2 Strain vodka to remove candy.
    • 3 For each serving, in chilled cocktail shaker, place 1/2 cup infused vodka and 1/4 cup pineapple juice; add ice. Shake; pour into martini glass. If desired, garnish each glass with additional candy corn.

    • I had thought of a simular one this year – get a large pumkin, carve it with terrified “scream”, then split the thing down the middle … then take a slightly smaller pumkin, carve it with a teethy ghoulish face and have appear to be bursting out from inside the larger.

      The “monster inside my skull” effect.
      I’m sure it’s been done before but still could be swell.

      No time for me to tackle that one though.
