  1. Well, there you go – no Megan Fox for Transformers 3.

I know you’ve been holding your breath in anticipation for this news….

  2. I don’t usually let my opinion of the actor/author’s opinions affect my views on the creative works that they are involved with.

I make an exception to that for Orson Card and Megan Fox.

  3. I would let Megan Fox not being involved with a new Transformers movie bother me if I liked the Transformer movies. Unfortunately I can’t take the shitty writing in exchange for the robot porn any more than I could take Catwoman in exchange for seeing Halle Berry

  4. CP: DeadPan 166.
I’m to tired to think of something witty.
I think I’m allergic to something because my throat is killing me.

  5. Hey peeps, I need some help.

I need a couple of words that end in the letter V. Length doesn’t matter

    Thanks

  6. Funny thing is, the only word i could think of was Kiev.

Feel free to add more. I need three so lots to choose from is good.

  7. Ok, now I need six words that end in the letter I and six that end in the letter O and three that end in the letter A

    Any ideas?

  8. That sucks about the interview, Jack. But the rest sounds awesome.

I like Martin’s work, but I’m a bit behind on the Game of Thrones series.

  9. I stopped reading Game of Thrones series after the second book. I was enjoying them but, since it’s taking so long between books, I thought I’d wait until the series is finished before actually reading them. I’ll start again then.

  10. TEB: I pretty much agree. I also don’t like reading a tome that only covers a 2 week period. Still, he is a good writer. It’s just I have tons of other stuff to read too.

  11. I listen to two gaming podcasts, ditto. I was aware what Heavy Rain is, child abuse and all 🙂 I was just being facetious

  12. I used to work on the same team with EJ. The man is an inspiration. A true hero in every sense. http://indstate.edu/photog/EJBozarth

This guy was a Marine pilot, retired, and became a commercial airline pilot. He was involved in a car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down and only limited movement of his arms (not his hands). He was by far one of the best computer programmers I know, and I just found out he’s gone back to teaching (of all things) people how to FLY!

    Amazing.

  13. Re: Stone soup. I’ve heard the story before. Kind of like Seven Samurai in reverse. It’s also an old-school dungeon crawler, come to find out.

  14. JR: May 2009 had 1,685 comments. Not counting this week, which we’ve only just started, we are already at 1,342. So, unless the next two weeks are stupid slow on the boards, it’s safe to say we’ll pass 2009

  15. Empire Strikes Back came out 30 years ago today?!? Am I the only one that feels old?

This movie is my nemesis. When I was…uh… younger, I saw it in the theater. I had to pee in the middle of the movie. Since that day, I have NEVER! I mean NEVER seen this movie without an interruption. Phone calls, visitors, tape being eaten by the VCR. Some day I will see this movie beginning to end without something bothering my, but 30 years… wow.

  16. Empire 30 years. Wow. I guess that means I was 12 when Empire came out, and my son is 12 now. Cool incedence?

I was a big Star Wars nerd back in the day. They used to (and probably still do) sell these collector magazines about big epic films. The 12 year old me bought the collector edition for Empire because it would be a while before I could see it in the theater and I wanted to see pictures of space ships and aliens. I bring this up because I still have the magazine. It was sitting on my night stand waiting to be properly stored this morning.

  17. Van – Thanks for the link, I’ve been meaning to grab Calibre.

But what I meant was the physical e-ink e-reader e-device.

Preferably one that wasn’t made by e-Fairies.

  18. I am sure, as a pessimist, that the Prince of Persia movie will suck. That said, they’ve done a remarkable job of making Bubble Boy look like the character from Sands of Time.

  19. I for one really like Mr. Darko as an actor and we have the director of the Pirate movies. 🙂 That doesn’t mean it won’t suck, but there are reasons in place that may mean it won’t. I’m hoping.

  20. Supported models from the website:

At the moment calibre has full support for the SONY PRS 300/500/505/600/700/900, Barnes & Noble Nook, Cybook Gen 3/Opus, Amazon Kindle 1/2/DX, Entourage Edge, Longshine ShineBook, Ectaco Jetbook, BeBook/BeBook Mini, Irex Illiad/DR1000, Foxit eSlick, PocketBook 360, Italica, eClicto, Iriver Story, Airis dBook, Hanvon N515, Binatone Readme, Teclast K3, SpringDesign Alex, Kobo Reader, various Android phones and the iPhone/iPad. In addition, using the Save to disk function you can use it with any ebook reader that exports itself as a USB disk.

  21. Goodnight :Scry: (go dream of Megan Fox and Orson Scott Card)

JR, congrats about the Podiobook release!

I would like to do a moderately decent recording of the NIN/Smurfs parody that debuted at LepreCon; you may hear it yet.

  22. All I know is you can always tell how good a movie is going to be when literally five minutes into it the is already nudity.

  23. Movie
    Movie 2: Electric Boogaloo
    Movie 3: IN 3-D!
Movie 4: the Uninspired, yet Inevitable Money Grab
Movie 5: We’ve Figured Out a Way to Make it Work Again. OK, Just Kidding.
    Movie 6: the Reboot
Movie 7: the Almighty and Us, We’ve Got an Understanding

  24. I admit, it’s been long enough since I’ve seen the first two movies, I have no idea what/or if the motivation is of this creature.

Not that I think it really matters

  25. Paramount pictures sent a tweet “Even without Megan Fox, we promise the same level of quality on Transformers 3 that we provided with 2”

    I guess that’s a movie I don’t need to see.

  26. Earlier I was Happy, but Sneezy. My allergies got worse, I got Grumpy. I took my sinus medication and now I’m Sleepy and Dopey. Why can’t I just be Doc or Bashful?

  27. CW: The Good Guys Episode 1

Hard to believe this painfully unffuny cop show is from the guy who created Burn Notice.

  28. The season finale of Fringe was awesome, but don’t bother with the “bonus scene” on the Fox website that “keeps the action going”. It is nothing but a commercial for Ford

  29. In terms of the meaning of life call it was in fact Lo Pan who was mistaken to be me.

    Telltale signs:

    1) Caller says he is in Denver, I only wish I could be in Denver this year.

    2) Caller is enjoying a cigarette, while I shy away from the cancer sticks.

    And

    3) Caller has dopey, reedy voice, while I have a manly, authoritative tone.

  30. “Empire Strikes Back came out 30 years ago today?!? Am I the only one that feels old?”
    Yes. Yes JR you are.

Holy mama… good news is I dont remember calling in. The bad news is I really dont remember calling in.

K gotta scoot for a bit. I have some Hispanics to racially profile.

  31. Wakka wakka!!! J/k JB.

Wait I has Mezzkins to stalk dinna I? Boys you betta have yer Greeeen Cards! Er yer gunna git back to MEEEEZEEEECOOO!!!!

  32. No its cause he sucks. Now get out of the car, please. You have a brown tint to you and I must make sure youre here legally.

  33. Doesnt matter m’am. Dark skin = dark skin. Now show me your fucking government issued ID or I’m throwing you in the back of the van. Trust me, you dont wanna go in the back of the van.

  34. Wait youre already in the Van? Oh this is gunna be easier than me thoughts. Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe…… *snort*

  35. EssBee and Cj in the back of the van … with carpeting…

Quick, EssBee close the door and lock it before the boys get in!

    *swoooon*

  36. Nothing like sleeping in late and finding a humorous thread running on the Deadpan to start my day.

Now, was that “Get in the Van!” or, “I’m with the Band!”

It’s sometimes hard to hear with the music in the bar.

  37. Alright, Facebookers – what is this about:

I’ve seen the second thing come along trying to get me to “like” some group so that I can see some sort of amazing/horrifying image. So far, I’ve resisted falling for them. Perhaps, I still have some healthy paranoia left after all, in spite of being on Facebook 🙂

Here’s the latest one that someone I know “liked”

    http://www.facebook.com/pages/Photographer-Commits-Suicide-After-Taking-This-Picture/115414148500379?v=app_123123264377640

Anyone follow through on these? Will it eat my soul? Fill my hard drive with Smurf porn? What?

  38. Mr. um, Lo Pan… I’m curious, what is that curious yellow tinge to your skin? And, are your eyes pointing up or down at the corners?

I’m going to need to see your papers and work permits. I’m getting a distinct impression that you may be here illegally.

  39. Rhettro – the term “midoclorians” shall be stricken from Deadpan talk hence and forthwith. Papers please….

    Me Jabba no bodda.

  40. Lo Pan is already non-corporeal so isn’t lopping off limbs rather pointless?

Ed: I never follow those links on FB. Nor anything that has been put through tiny url or the like.

  41. You really need to hear my seven year old daughter sing the first part of Flyleaf’s “I’m So Sick” on Rockband. Hilarious! Love her death metal vocal. I may just have to record it.

  42. Love this gem from the site:
“The overall goal is humor, because sex is funny.”
I bookmarked it immediately reading that.

  43. And, I’m going to (dinner in) Disneyworld (in November)!

Probably will catch a ride or two while we’re there. You know, first time and all.

  44. Morning :pan: Getting ready to take my car in for repairs (antifreeze leak somewhere). I hate doing this. Let’s see how many hundreds of dollars I can throw away today 🙁

  45. Good morning, :pan: . Taking the kids to a birthday party then the splashpad to cool off today.

    wheee!

    Have a great day, everyone.

Hope you spend less than you expect, UH.

  46. kinda wish i could have watched the hockey game. the updates from my phone about the game where more interesting than that movie

  47. Opened a piece of paper in that I found in my bag of cereal. Apparently I can friend my cereal on Facebook and/or follow my cereal on twitter. Something is wrong. Something is very, very wrong.

  48. CP: Overkill – Men at Work

I listened to this song while sitting on my apartment building’s staircase in Japan. (There’s a musical memory I should record and send in. Actually, I have several such memories from that period.)

Usedhair: Heh! That is both funny and true.

  49. Hi pan! Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Finished reading “Thud!” the other day. It has been a long time since I read any Pratchett. I forgot how much I enjoy his work. I may have to phone in with a stolen paragraph (or two). 🙂

  50. Mort to Men at Arms are my fav DW novels (Small Gods being No.1), haven’t enjoyed the later ones so much, even though TP is an author whose books I buy in hardback.

  51. And then there were 3. The Chicago Blackhawks just eliminated the San Jose Sharks in a sweep. Are we really going to have a Blackhawks-Flyers Finals, or can the Canadiens pull off the miracle comeback?

  52. Returned to work to find that one of the birds shat on the computer mouse.

And all over the rest of the desk.

Thankfully he seems to have missed my safety glasses, ear muffs, and radio.

  53. Night Watch was pretty cool; I didn’t make the attempt yet with Day Watch.

    I did catch the Lost finale tonight, though. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . anyone?

  54. I liked the end also. Anyone who listens to or reads anything about Lost knew they wouldn’t answer all the questions. You can only go back so far. I would have liked a little more about the origin of the island. Maybe even show some virgin sacrifice in the temple, statue, pool or plug. Just 10 minutes to say “it’s really really old so you wouldn’t understand”. But it made me smile so I’m happy.

  55. reaper, I was smiling at the end also. I think that it requires some thought . . . unlike the rabidly angry, I liked it.

  56. It’ll figure the Lost finale will be of the love it or leave it instance. ALL I care about is that it didnt ruin the show for me as the BSG finale almost did. It was what it was. I expected no more and no less and therefore cant be disappointed or blown away. As reaps said, I was smiling the whole way thru so thats the ultimate sign of success for me.

NOW wtf do I have that will make me think and debate as much as this show did? Maybe V! No…. not really.

Related note… FINALLY saw the series finale of SG: Atlantis last nite as well. That was poo on top of what was otherwise a good series. The more I watch series finales, the more I’m inclined to believe its the hardest thing in the world to wrap up a show well. Usually its more Seinfeld than M.A.S.H.

  57. SG1 I think was one of the better endings. the wrapped up the major problems and than said with out coming right out and saying it “It’s a big universe and we have more to explore.”

for Lost I first watched the “Enhanced” Pilot yesterday and it made me think “Did they thing they would only get a 10 show run”. Smokey first look, polar bear, Bamboo Stand, and the old distress signal in the first episode. wow I thought that was spread through the 1st season. but i did watch the first 2.5 seasons rapid fire.

  58. If “Lost” ended with Starbuck landing her Viper and the beach and exposing the survivors as Cylons, I promise to go back and watch the entire “Lost” series from the beginning.

  59. Starbuck and her angelish self can suck it.

Reasp do you recall the ending of SG-1? I grant you it was good in lieu of the movies that came out after it, but had the show ended without the two wrap-up films I would have been pissed.

  60. Theres a theme I’m seeing here as Scry already pointed out on hims blog… uber fanboy gheytards ala Sci Fi Wire and I09 overall aint so pleased with it. “Normal person” gheytards ala USA Today and Entertainment Weekly seemed to really enjoy it. Granted these are the preliminary reviews but methinks we fanboys and girls expect the impossible of the shows we love.

‘Cept for BSG. Cause that sucked… but I digress

  61. Lo Pan. I remember the last seen mostly. Where they open a new worm hole and explore a new world. I don’t think that epp was necessary for the most part because (if i remember right) the show started with cleaning up what was finished in the last few shows.

  62. Mostly reaps, but they never resolved the Ba’al storyline not the Ori storyline completely, so thats when the movies came out.

  63. I preferred the more fantastical Atlantis to SG1, because, well, I prefer fantasy. That said, the “We canceled the show, so that cliffhanger is HUGE, hahaha” thing is really annoying, but understandable in a ridiculously optimistic way.

What makes me want to kick things is when the writers make the characters do things that are out of character. It’s one of the reasons I never liked Martha as a companion.

But that’s a rant for another day. The only series finales that I’ve seen are for TNG and BSG. I loved how TNG wrapped it all the way back to the first episode. I hated how BSG made mockery of it’s own imaginings. Eventually I’ll make my way through all of B5 (season 2 begun)… what else is there that has actually had a full run without getting canceled midway?

  64. Oh and I greatly enjoyed both Nightwatch and Daywatch. I’d love to see more in that series. Since the two movies are actually based off of the first of four books, there should be plenty of material left to mine.

  65. I liked the Lost ending. It wrapped up almost exactly as I expected it to. In the end the Island’s history is less important than the characters journeys.

  66. “what else is there that has actually had a full run without getting canceled midway?”

Sex in the City. I dare you….

  67. Or is it Sex AND the City? God I dont even care. No offence to the Smarty Hottie… if shes watching. Which she always is….always….watching…

  68. Rhettro, I have to agree. I was watching “The Final Journey” before “The End” and the kept saying it was about people. I just would have liked something small about the island. 5-10 minutes of something that said we are the people who made the statue ect. That is the only thing I felt was missing.

  69. Yeah, me too reaper. A little more history would have been nice, but overall, I feel satisfied. Better than the BSG ending. Although I didn’t think the BSG ending was all that bad.

  70. EssBee I love you and I know you love me… lets not spoil that love with me letting you know my true feelings on Buffy.

    *gleaming smile*

  71. Hmmmm… looking at my Pratchett collection it seems I’m a bigger fan of the Night Watch and Death storylines than the others. 🙂

  72. I have to say best ending of a series goes to Blakes 7, put that in your netflick queues, put on the rose tinted spectacles (for the oh so dodgy SFX), and enjoy one of the best Scifi shows the BBC ever did (with story arcs oh my).

  73. NS, it got canceled and SMG was leaving anyway, but they knew at the outset of Season 7 (or end of Season 6), so were able to close the series out.

    Got, I’m tired.

  74. Good idea! I might be cranky today.

Tweezer, by Phish, just came on my iPod and it made me actually angry.

    Coffee is a good suggestion!

  75. Stupid nutso day!! Sorry EssBee.

Oh, and ditto… “Why do doctors offices always fuck up the bill?”
Cause theyre like gay ducks. WAKKA WAKKA!

  76. Bugger, for some reason the finale was capped in two parts, only grab part 2, so no Lost finale till tomorrow.

CW: Breaking Bad – a ‘bottle’ episode.

  77. Jack that was nice.
EssBee strokes is never a mistake!!!
I think now that lost is over I could get my Wife to watch it. and i know my daughter will watch.I just need to get them on bluray.
seeing the pilot in HD was so much better than SD

  78. *blush* Still not as swoony as that Lo Pan. He’s dreamy.

I *think* every Lost episode is currently available at the abc.go.com website. And Van, IMDB claims to have the Finale – maybe they have the complete episode?

  79. Van, I wasn’t, but that is also hot. I was talking about you transcoding it for your phone and watching it on break.

Now to just imagine you saying that outloud . . .

    Give me a minute . . .

  80. Did anyone ever think that maybe Aussie women are just whores and dont care who they do?

Now, where can I find Emilie de Ravin?

  81. Weekend = Long
    Carpets = Shampooed.

Usedhair: I enjoyed Santiago, Santiago 2, Soothsayer, Oracle, and Prophet, all by Resnick

NS: Watched both Nightwatch and Daywatch. Enjoyed both. Awaiting the final sequel…

    …Parsing
    …..Parsing
    …….Parsing
    ___ LOOMING CHRIST ____
    Yes, you read that correctly.

Don’t turn around, Christ is reading over your shoulder… Looming, as it were…

That 6 pack business, that’s not really a surprise.
-there was a survey done some time ago which pointed to Bruce Willis’ body type as practically ideal (back in the Armageddon days, I think…) I’ve also seen various surveys stating that women prefer a man’s back to be well developed and not necessarily anything about the abs… but what do I know, I have a penis.

  82. Six pack abs are nothing special on a guy, though I do know women who prefer it.

Personally, I think we all have different tastes and there can’t ever be a standard really. Some women like abs, some like shoulders, some like baby-faces…

It all changes the moment a conversation takes place anyway.

  83. Strangely, The IT Crowd had an episode which I believe “commented” on social networks… The ep was called Friendface – which was also the name of the fictional social networking site — If you have Netflix, you can watch it streaming – although if you haven’t seen seasons 1 and 2, you may want to catch up first.

  84. I’ve yet to hear this episode, but I’m up for another 60-line deal.

I recall a study that showed that women wanted to bang guys with 6-pack-abs, but marry the less-fit guy. He’s a safer long-term investment.

  85. Things are getting de-desperate, when all the boys can’t be men, everybody knows I’m her friend, everybody knows I’m her man.

  86. “Whatever became of the moment when one first knew about death? There must have been one, a moment, in childhood when it first occurred to you that you don’t go on for ever. It must have been shattering – stamped into one’s memory. And yet I can’t remember it”

  87. I have never seen a show walk right up to the edge of the shark tank, dangle it’s limbs into the tank, taunt the shark and then be able to walk away unscathed as many times as “Chuck” has.

Really clever twists and turns for a pseudo-sitcom.

Guess Ed and I will have to buy a LOT of Subway breakfast sandwiches if we hope to see another season.

  88. re: the abs. All I know is that I am so much more body confident since I put on 65lbs and went from Skeletor to “obese”. I finally weigh enough to push something and have it move, instead of just moving myself.

And everything I’ve seen watching people tells me that confidence is more attractive than body type.

  89. EssBee doesn’t have one and I am desperately trying not to make a Freud joke about envy that incorporates Clueless-style valley-slang.

Like, totally *in* this season. [bubblegum snaps]

  90. Everytime I see a couple where the women is taller than the man, I have to resist the urge to go and congratulate them for not being sheep.

Take a deep breath and think calming thoughts…

  91. btw – Chuck is confirmed for a fourth season. They’ve got another 13 episode order for the fall.

So, all you slackers, go Netflix the first three seasons and get caught up for the fall. Especially now that you don’t have to worry about Lost anymore.

    🙂

  92. I learned something this weekend. If you have six weeks for forced inactivity and don’t change your diet, you gain a whole butt load of weight.

I knew there was a reason I was avoiding the scale *sigh*

  93. Sort of catching up: I think I already told Jack I’m in for sixty times two. If not, telling ya now, Jack.

    Now for some breakkie…

  94. By the way. here is the current list of peeps and the teams they must sing a song about. Some of you have submitted so, if you have, good on you.

    Jack – Detroit & Philadelphia
Lo Pan – San Jose & Chicago
    Amy – Vancouver & Chicago
    Rhettro – San Jose
    Ditto – Chicago & Pitsburg
    Jeremy – Chicago & Philadelphia
    Paul Maki – Boston
    Bunny – Montreal & Philadelphia
    Cj – Montreal

    I think that’s everybody.

Three peeps made it to the cup finals, Vanamonde, The Smarty Hotties, and PC Harring. Good luck guys!

  95. I’ve actually been a little disappointed with Dr. Who this season. They’ve only shown to part 2 of the weeping angles but even to then, you can tell Russel Davis is not as involved.

I have nothing against the new doctor. True, he’s no David Tennant, however he’s no better or worse than some of the other doctors in the past. I do think the writing has suffered a little bit this year. Maybe I’ve just become spoiled.

  96. One of the things I liked about the End of Time was seeing two of the four main Being Humans. The vamp could’ve been in there and I might’ve missed him. No way I’d miss the ghost though. Her smile’s too infectious.

  97. Things I dislike about Longmont:

    1) my neighbors – they are horrible

    2) the cottonwood – my allergies are killing me

    3) the wasps

    Otherwise, I like it.

  98. So Jaws held up to the ravages of time? Sweet. I’ve still never seen it. Read the book, though it was the neutered version (Reader’s Digest Condensed) and wasn’t very interesting.

  99. Nomad Scry: Yes, the “Questors” scene was recorded live at LLAP Studios. Thank you! And yes, that’s correct. Jack read the part that’s assigned to Mike M. and will be read by him in the final studio cut.

  100. Ha. Scryaling out of control. I like.

I’ve reached that level of pain and tired and advil where I’m just a bit floatey. Which means I have to go to bed now or I’ll be up all sleep-time. Floating.

    Be safe.

  101. Scry, I don’t know where the rainbows came from either, but I did manage to insert twelve of them into the show notes.

    Off to the doctors!!

  102. NS: Yes, he does have one. His wife will happily confirm it… but not on Deadpan.

RE: this season of Doctor Who — I don’t know if I can feel let down by the season, I have felt that it was more of a first season, and with a new cast, new writers, new producer, that’s not surprising. It’s still better than Heroes after season 1.

I hereby state that I am NOT in Longmont. If I was, I’d change my handle.

TEB: when the sneezes start to tickle, rub the roof of your mouth with your tongue.

  103. I’m enjoying the new Dr. Who very much. I think Matt Smith brings a fresh take on the Doctor. I’m halfway through the new weeping angels two-parter.

  104. I’m also enjoying the new Dr Who, although I’m concerned over some of the SFX, they seem dodgy than usual this season (I’ve seen budget cuts mentioned), the dalek ship was just tatty.

  105. Re: New season of Dr. Who

I think the stories have had some good ideas behind them and I think the new cast has been chosen well … but something about the writing just feels “sub par”.

In a way, it almost feels like the writers were divided into teams, each team was given an assignment (you lot go write the opening, you lot do a middle bit with a kind of a side story, and you lot go write some sort of ending) and then the teams were all sent to different parts of the building with little or no contact between them.

Still, I watch and hope it matures.

  106. JOe, that’s totally it. Russell has left the building, and we can tell.

Speaking of Russell T. Davies, I did NOT know until recently that he wasthe creator of Queer As Folk. I like that about him.

  107. Lejon, I don’t know how much they where but I got some Bose Earbuds for Christmas. they AMAZING!!!!!!! I think I would pay more than $70 for those. I can use them while mowing the lawn and not have to turn them all the way up.

  108. Rhettro, I always equated Funyuns with stoners because anytime my friends where high there where always Funyuns around and Doritos…
and what is fun about them?

  109. New Dr. Who is good IMO. The dream one had some interesting takes on the psychology of the characters. I wasn’t a fan of the effects at the end of “Vampire’s of Venice” but the story was sound. Had a few chilling “You’re a Timelord, but we are the last of our kind and you are going to let us die” moments.

Have Saturday’s cued up but haven’t had the chance to watch it yet.

    Balls.

  110. Haha, Jack. You charmer . . .

Today, work = hell. I am almost done, though, and am looking forward to going home and working out.

  111. The default iPod earbuds hurt my ears. I use earcandy buds – I think NS recommended those quite some time ago, and I thank him. They’re very similar to the fancy Sony soft bud buds, but are about $24.

    Balls.

  112. I have heard a lot of good things about Rosencranz and Guildenstern are dead, but would I still get it if I’m not familiar with Hamlet? Is Rosencranz and Guildenstern are Undead worth watching without the background of R & C are Dead?

  113. Let me clarify. I am FAMILIAR with Hamlet in that I can tell you most of the plot, but I haven’t read it in years and have NO desire whatsoever to do so now, or even to watch any of the movie versions.

  114. Well watched Lost finale part 2.

My inner sentimental slob liked it, and I was no left with no feelings of hatred towards the writers like I felt for the BSG finale.

    So a thumbs up.

  115. ditto: Congrats to you as well!

usedhair: I’d say so. Hamlet is the backdrop, and the original play comes in at times, but the movie isn’t super-heavy with the source material. It’s enough to make the story move, and it’ll probably be enough to prod your brain into remembering bits and pieces.

If you recall, we don’t really hear about these characters until the end of Hamlet, so they’re not heavily meshed.

I am tired and that probably reads as though it was written in Shakespearian English, converted to Klingon, and then rehashed with a corrupt babblefish database.

    Where’s my goddamned mead?

  116. If anyone is interested, Amazon has the complete Firefly series on Blu-Ray for $28 today.

To put it in perspective, the DVD set is $4 less.

    Quite the steal.

  117. I am so completely farther behind on :pan: comments than I’ve ever been.

    I feel shame.

I don’t think I’ve been behind since November of 2008.

  118. Re: Doctor Who, I may be in the minority here. This season of Dr. Who has left me wanting. Maybe I miss David Tennant. Maybe it’s Matt Smith’s style, or the new writers, directors, producer, alignment of the planets, or who knows what. But so far, the only thing I dig about this season is Amy Pond.

And yes, I like redheads. But seriously, she’s spunky, got all the best lines, and she’s Scottish.

Fish custard, though, that was cool. And it was good to see River Song again. Vampires in Venice was OK, but I agree with the ending being bollocks. I mean seriously… an off switch?!? (spoilerish but, you’ll get it when you see it.) And dude, I freaking LOVE vampires y’know, and they were well done, but still. Dude.

I’m still waiting for this Doctor to be brilliant. I’m not giving up, mind you. I’m a life-long Whovian. The little nods to past Doctors have been cute (the library card for example). But that’s kinda my point. It’s like he has to keep pointing out to us that he really, really IS the Doctor, instead of just BEING the Doctor.

    Oh well. Allons-y!

  119. My brief, unqualified contribution to the new Millennium Dr. Who conversation:

Of the episodes I’ve seen, almost all have been rife with hokiness, but all three Doctors and most of the companions have been really magnetic, endearing personalities, and so even the bad episodes are still fairly enjoyable. Tennant is probably the most likable, though. He seems to have enjoyed the role the most.
(But Peter Davidson would out sonic-screwdriver all of ’em)

    Goodnight :Atik:

  120. I still like the Skullcandy ear buds (as little as $15 on sale) but I had a bad spat where I was destroying them left and right. Turns out I had to loop ’em around my head differently because my ear muffs at work were breaking the wires.

My favorite are from Razer. They make gaming mice, mostly, but they used to make a pair of earbuds called the m100. They were really awesome in the noise blocking and comfort zones. Now I’m wearing a pair of Razer Moray that are pretty nice.

I had a pair of Altec Lansing UE but … while the range and depth of the music was really nice, they weren’t worth the extra price (over $70) because they were not any sturdier and the cloth wrapped cord made lots of noise. Every time it moved, it sounded like a snare drum going off in my head.

For the odd occasion where I want to listen to music and actually hear what’s going on around me, I have a pretty old pair of Philips Earhook earbuds. I’m surprised how long they’ve lasted actually. They were sub-$20.

I’ve got a pair of Sennheiser (I think CX300?) waiting as backups for when the Razer’s fail out. I think I paid $40 for them. I’ve worn them a few times and I couldn’t really tell any difference from the Razers. Maybe a touch lighter overall?

I’ve got a drawer full of dead earbuds. Can you tell?

  121. I do not like Amy Ponds. She needs to put on some pants.

I do not like the new Who. He needs to stop being so near-sighted.

I do, however, like Rory. He is turning into an actual character, while the Doctor is still being a caricature of himself. The way he stands up to the Doctor in Hungry Earth is sweet.

That said. I was watching a Tennent and Piper montage the other day and remembering how much I detested him when he first came on. He was ugly and gauky and boney and stiff and just so totally not right. How could world weary Doctor “die” and turn into this buffoon? It took Tennent a good season (maybe two) to grow into being the Doctor.

(Which makes me really wish I could visit the alternate Earth where Eccleson stayed on for more than just one lousy season. ‘Cuz he was awesome from the get go.)

I think that Smith will grow into the role and in another year he will feel right. What bothers me more is that this doesn’t feel like there is canon. It feels like a fanfic, not a real continuation of the same characters and the same series.

But I haven’t (yet) watched any of the old Who, so … maybe this is the way it has always been and I’ve just been used to the best that Who has ever been?

  122. To be fair, I care less about the Doctor than I do about Rose and Donna.

I think that is by design though. I think I read something by one of the writers from the Baker days to that effect, that the companion is the stand in for the viewer. The Doctor can’t really be accessible or even grow much because he is already so much of the Other. So… he’s cool and stuff, but it is the companions that we identify with.

  123. Oh, and if you are looking for a pair of ear buds to drive you insane, or perhaps a pair to gift your worst enemy, may I recommend the Maximo iMetal earbuds.

    They fall out.

    They have an odd shape.

But most importantly, they ting. In your ear. With no provocation.

  124. I have odd shaped ears and very sensitive ear canals due to a plethora of ear infections when I was young. Thus, I can’t wear any regular ear buds (they fall out) or in-ear ear buds (they hurt and create wax buildup). If I don’t want to look like an idiot walking around with my old-fashioned-princess-Leia-danish-strapped-to-the-side-of-the-head head phones (Sony MDR-V150), I have to use the earhook ear buds (Panasonic). The only thing I have about the earhook jobbies is that they get tangled up at the drop of a hat.

  125. As for Doctor Who, I was never able to get in to it. Also never really got into Star Trek. I know this is heresy for most of the people in the sci-fi community, but I can’t change who I am and what I like.

  126. Usedhair brought up something weird about my ears also that makes me not mind paying a little extra for earbuds. I also had many many ear infections so I have about 20% of my eardrum left in my right ear. I need something that has a very good range of sound because there are many tones I can’t hear well. if something has a tinny sound I may as well not use them because I can’t hear it anyway from my right ear. The tight fit also helps so it can block out other notices which helps a lot.

  127. Morning Pan!

Question of the day: Is it me or is there some kind of ick factor involved when some guy tries to chat you up at the doctor’s office?

    Just asking.

  128. In today’s news:

Bad News: Hubby needs a root canal. On pain killers until Monday when they can get it done.

Good News: My yard is being torn up. Must move my car in an hour so the landscapers can get their equipment in.

Indifferent News: My painkillers are putting pretty sparklies in front of my face for me to try to catch :silly:

  129. I have come to a decision. I’m pretty sure the medical system is using me for their own personal blood bank considering the amount they’ve taken from me over the last few weeks.

  130. In really good news, found a doctor who is willing to do more than pat you on the head and say “there, there”. Now let the experiments begin!

  131. Oh my. That’s a down down down low song.

You need some hot coffee and some ridiculously bad country music. The crap that is so bad it makes you laugh at it…

There’s a tear in my beer
cause I’m crying for you dear

  132. Bunny, Nomad Scry is correct. It was a lost reference. One of my favorites. So you being lost would be fitting on so many levels.

Reaper <—–Making bad Puns since the early 80's (I was born in 79 so I assume I started doing that in the early 80's)

Ben being funny evil is always a win in my book.

  133. I know a lot of people have a problem with hitting 30 but I didn’t have any trouble at all. I’m about 2 1/2 weeks from 31. I don’t feel old at all. I look at my mom who is 61 and i don’t think she is old either. now my grandpa who is 92 i would call old.

  134. Reaper, I don’t have problems hitting the “0’s” my problem is with young whipper snappers fifteen years my junior

  135. I’m off. Unfortunately, will have to listen to the latest LLAP tomorrow.

    Might be back after lunch.

    Later gators!

  136. Respectfully, in my opinion, hard pretzels are never good pretzels.

Nothing beats a good mall pretzel with the mustard and dammit now I’m hungry with no car.

    I blame you reaper.

  137. NS, Your welcome. 🙂 Soft pretzels are way better IMO. I also think the only thing a pretzel is helped by is mustard.

  138. Yeah. Dee got a big gasp from me. I did not see that one coming, not at all.

At least with most of them, someone was in danger.

I haven’t seen Mrs. Summer’s yet. And I kind of wish I didn’t know it was coming, cuz that must have wrecked some people in the day.

Having uttered valley-isms, I must now say “y’all come back now, heyah” to redeem my souls.

  139. Alton Brown’s recipe for just about everything sounds like it is made of win. Maybe I’ll have to try a few of them while my wife is at her night class because I will be in charge of dinner.

  140. POP was silly, silly fun. JG sounded dubbed although maybe be wrong about that.

Oh and I got accosted while watching the movie because a member of the cinema staff thought I was using a video recorder…it was my phone.

  141. I can’t believe they didn’t mention the Library level in Halo, or the Pillars of Hades in God of War. All Ghillied Up was not that bad.

  142. Street fighter, Maden and Gunstar Heroes are the only ones I haven’t had experience with.
Kart’s Rainbow Road gets the biggest middle finger from me.

  143. I swear, one of the guys doing the front yard could be Vin Diesel’s brother. It kind of makes me quiver – in a good way.

  144. I’m a loadin’, loadin’ my war machine
I’m contributing to the system, the break down scheme
I’m a shuttin’ down, I’m shuttin’ down your greed for green
I am here to gun it down, I gotta do

  145. Should I do a play by play?

They’ve got most of trees cut down, and all the bushes pulled. Mr. Diesel light and another have actually left for a bit to do a dump run 🙁 The two left playing in my yard just don’t have the same affect on me

  146. So we can put TEB in the ‘like muscles on blokes’ category.

You hear that Australia, don’t try selling the bunny any kangeroo in a can with a fat bloke in the ad.

  147. It’s nice to look at but, nine times out of ten, the muscles seem to be in thier head also. That’s not so nice. Because of that, I prefer to look but not really talk to them.

  148. Truth is Van, I’m in the livingroom regardless of who’s outside my window. I’m quite drugged up right now so laid out on the couch with my book.

    CR: Flood – Stephen Baxter

  149. Boy it sure didn’t take long for them to reduce my yard to practically nothing. I figured it’d take several days, at least, to remove all the trees. Will have to go out tonight to take my first “during” pic. Although I expected the pics to show a more gradual change. It’s already quite drastic.

  150. Change of subject: I wonder if hubby would be willing to order in dinner tonight. I just don’t think I feel like cooking tonight.

  151. usedhair: a passing familiarity with Hamlet is all you need. R & C r Ded is awesome. Even reading the play is totally worth it.

JfS: I really like Matt Smith as the Doctor, and Amy Pond (SWOOOOOOOOOON – I’ll just have to survive the wife) is awesome. The problem I’m having is that the writing seems sloppy or too loose with the Doctor character. I know it’s a new personality and all, and I like what Smith is bringing to that, but there are certain things that feel at times like the writing staff is overly inexperienced with the character (see my comment above about it feeling like a 1st season)
–That being said… The Hungry Earth has officially brought the “A” game. STUPID 2-PART EP…

NS: It does sort of feel like Mr. Smith goes to Galifrey… He’s not “all there”… I believe the first thing that I noticed was that he failed to notice so much, or rather, he noticed something EXTREMELY important, but focused on that while his companion was left to work out too much stuff on their own. Someone mentioned near-sighted, add Myopic to that. Although, Smith won me over from Fish Custard, so who am I to judge? — As for Classic who, there is a LOT of camp, but that was routinely tempered with decent story (look at the e-Space trilogy, Specifically “State of Decay” – that’s a whole lot of gothic hocum, but the story is awesome. NOTE: ignore the special effects. Just do it).

Not Cheap, but avoids the ear
    http://www.audioboneheadphones.com/

TEB: As long as you didn’t blow goats as well, I think we’re all happy about what goes in your mouth.

  152. Under how stupid can you be. I have landscapers, with tractors, etc working in my yard. The neighbour across the street pulls up and parks in front of my house, making it hard for the scapers to move with their equipment. Under, clueless… I went to knock on her door but she’s not answering. I’ll wait for her husband to come home and politely ask them not to park there for the next two weeks.

  153. The woman maybe, Lejon. I’m not so sure about the husband. It occured to me, we’ve lived here 14 years and I don’t even know who the neighbours across the street are, beyond nodding our heads when we see eachother. I know they’re red necks, though. He has the fake bullet holes on his truck and all, so we’ve never been inclined to introduce ourselves

  154. I think I’m not a happy camper right now. While I know this doctor is actually trying, unlike the other one, the painkillers aren’t working at all and the “side affects may include” are hitting me big time. I think I’m going to be sick.

  155. It is seventy nine degrees in my office. I thought it was a hot flash until I looked at the thermostat.

    HELL. I work in Hell.

  156. I too got the skullcandy earbud things. I only really use them when I am running, and I really refuse to pay a lot for that small “need”. I got them for $7 at a Marshall’s. They’re fine. Hell, we’re (nearly) all listening to mp3s, which are shit quality to start with.

Jack: Right on! Re: Waterfall level!

reaper: Gunstar heroes is kinda famous. Famous for what, you ask? I think I beat that game at least a dozen times. But damn it, it’s just so much fun to play again! Of course, I can’t say how well it holds up over the decade-plus since I played it.

    DJ Bunny: Get well soon.

That’s all the nipple-skimming for me today.

  157. Painkillers can go suck a cock. Seriously. Theyve destroyed the lives of 2 people extremely close to me. People fucking freak out about legalizing pot when this shit is dolled out by docs willy fucking nilly.

  158. Lo Pan: Don’t tell me people still think doctors are looking out for the patient’s well-being. It’s obviously nonsense.

    Yes, I’m serious.

  159. Talked to the neighbour. He actually seems quite nice and was very understanding about the vehicle. He’ll tell his wife not to park there any more.

  160. Well, time to order dinner and set up the living room. I’m thinking Orental tonight.

At the office in the morning so don’t know if I’ll be able to check in tomorrow. Not until after lunch for sure.

    Later Panites.

  161. B.A.T.C. INC.

  162. Strangely oriental can also mean the Middle East, which came as a bit of a surprise to me when I went to an art exhibition about oriental art.

The fight scene in Two Days in the Valley was a corker.

  163. Wait for me
At the edge of the world
Don’t come to me if you’re not quite sure
Do you feel the emptiness inside your soul
Did it break that heart of coal
    Did your walls of sin
    Crumble at your feet
Does the blood on your face
And on your hands, taste too sweet
In my mind you ain’t looking fine
    So isolation
And inside you ain’t fine to me
    So isolation desolation
    Don’t wait for me
At the edge of the world
Don’t come to me at all
    The way you look
    And think of me
    Is much much much
    Too small

  164. I think I (meaning, the family) had one of those Compaq portables and one of the C64 portables. If I remember correctly, we’d mostly moved on to the “IBM-Compatible” stage of life, so the C64 didn’t get much use.

What were they, a four inch screen? Fantastic!

  165. I hate you with every fiber of my being for the next 5 minutes, Scry.

God, Loken is pretty much a serial monogamist, isnt she? Ima give her my number, then yours EssBee.

  166. Yes, I = Mr. F. Thanks for the birthday wishes. Big 4-oh today. Best birthday present of the day was Alice Cooper showing up on American Idol. When worlds collide.
