Firsties! Firsties? Firsties. Firsties….
So, instead of death and taxes on this April 15th, the only things certain are a new Deadpan page and that Jack will be publishing new content.

Hubby’s working from home today.
A couple of our books have two covers, one for the e-version, one for the print. The boss asked me to change the website on those books to reflect the two covers.
I made changes.
She wanted it different.
Unfortunately, she can’t tell me what she wants. It’s one of those “I don’t know what I want but I’ll know it when I see it” kind of things.

Has a great Waitresses feel to it, imo.
As a rule, I do not ask my medical providers for political or financial advice.
Conversely, I would NEVER take medical advice from politicians or financial advisors.
Certainly not when my family’s life or mine is on the line.
I only hope the system isn’t too broken for us to fix this in November.
From a Canadian perspective, your system was broken before the last election. Unless you can get your house and senate to start working together, You’ll always have a broken system.
To dig deeper-
I think I system broke when the US society tipped over into a “leisure time”’society.
We became pre-occupied with being entertained. Put to much societal value on “fun”.
The result is a society that can’t be bothered to get involved in it’s own governing. For the majority of us, that sort of thing is not “fun” and in fact is “work”.
So we get willing to hold
Our collective noses at an increasingly stinky outcome as long as “government” just keeps running itself and leaves us be.
… and here we are.
When all the other developed nations were opting for a single-payer system, American doctors lobbied hard against it. Now we have lobbyists for doctors, insurance companies, drug companies, and lawyers who all have a vested interest in keeping the system as is. As great as a single-payer system could be, the reality is it would mean a pay cut to all those listed above and they are well funded to oppose change. The best path forward would be a planned, gradual phase-in of a single-payer system over a 10 year period. But most likely the system will have to fail completely and then be rebuilt for things to change.
Yes. There are other broken parts in the engine, but yes.
Our choices are between a likely molester and the confirmed molester who currently holds the big seat. That’s all the evidence you need that the system is broken.
New Fiona Apple out today.

I love “Criminal” but this is a little too “art-house-ee” for my taste. 3 songs in and I lost interest, but I’m sure the mainstream Apple fans will dig it.
Same here. Sadly. I recently read an article blasting men for not digging her later records. I. . . . fully love her vision, but the only music of hers that I truly love was from “Apple.”
But goddamn, it had nothing to do with her attractiveness or that MTV sexed her up – – I really loved all of the songs on that album. Just brilliant stuff.
You know I absolutely loved that first album. Was crazy about it before I had ever seen her. I just mathew led
At how someone so young could sing with so much soul.
Then I finally saw her do a live performance on MTV and she was terrible. Couldn’t hardly stay on pitch. It’s possible she was drunk or stoned but it was really disappointing.
I went back and listened to that album after that and I realized she IS very pitchy. That the genius of that album may have actually been the producer.
I still will occasionally listen to That album and enjoy it by forcing myself not to listen to closely … but I never made an effort to follow her after that.

Crap joke for the day:
As we enter the next 3 weeks of lock down here is a summary of the advice:
1. You MUST NOT leave the house for any reason, but if you have a reason, you can leave the house
2. Masks are useless at protecting you against the virus, but you may have to wear one because it can save lives, but they may not work, but they may be mandatory, but maybe not
3. Shops are closed, except those shops that are open
4. You must not go to work but you can get another job and go to work
5. You should not go to the Drs or to the hospital unless you have to go there, unless you are too poorly to go there
6. This virus can kill people, but don’t be scared of it. It can only kill those people who are vulnerable or those people who are not vulnerable. It’s possible to contain and control it, sometimes, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster
7. Gloves won’t help, but they can still help so wear them sometimes, or not
8. STAY HOME, but it’s important to go out
9. The virus has no effect on children except those children it affects
10. Animals are not affected, but there is still a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there…
11. You will have many symptoms if you get the virus, but you can also get symptoms without getting the virus, get the virus without having any symptoms or be contagious without having symptoms, or be non contagious with symptoms…
12. It’s important to get fresh air but don’t go to parks but go for a walk. But don’t sit down, except if you are old, but not for too long or if you are pregnant or if you’re not old or pregnant but need to sit down. If you do sit down don’t eat your picnic
13. Don’t visit old people but you have to take care of the old people and bring them food and medication
14. If you are sick, you can go out when you are better but anyone else in your household can’t go out when you are better unless they need to go out
15. You can’t see your older mother or grandmother, but they can take a taxi and meet an older taxi driver
16. You are safe if you maintain the safe social distance when out but you can’t go out with friends or strangers at the safe social distance
17. The virus remains active on different surfaces for two hours … or four hours… six hours… I mean days, not hours… But it needs a damp environment. Or a cold environment that is warm and dry… in the air, as long as the air is not plastic
18. Schools are closed so you need to home educate your children, unless you can send them to school because you’re not at home. If you are at home you can home educate your children using various portals and virtual classrooms, unless you have poor internet, or more than one child and only one computer, or you are working from home. Baking cakes can be considered maths, science or art. If you are home educating you can include household chores to be education. If you are home educating you can start drinking at 10am
19. The number of corona related deaths will be announced daily but we don’t know how many people are infected as they are only testing those who are almost dead to find out if that’s what they will die of… the people who die of corona who aren’t counted won’t be counted
20. You should stay in lock down until the virus stops infecting people but it will only stop infecting people if we all get infected so it’s important we get infected and some don’t get infected
21. No business will go under due to Corona virus except those businesses that will have already gone under.

You know that part in the movie where it gets quiet and the people trapped in the room say “maybe it’s gone” and “we should go out and see”…
…and the whole audience is thinking, “YOU IDIOTS! IT’S RIGHT OUTSIDE THE DOOR!!!!”
Yeh. That’s where we are in this horror story.
I will also say this, though – – and I’m absolutely open to counter arguments:
I get the temptation to spend time with your isolation crew/family at the beach, especially if you live in an oceanside town.
I’m not talking about going and joining in on beach volleyball or walking a boardwalk or letting your kid play with other kids in the surf. If the beach isn’t crowded, then social distancing of 20 feet or more would be safe and easy. I know that you can’t control what other people do, but I suspect you wouldn’t have assholes come and invade your space.
The above would obviously require light crowds. If there were lots of other beachgoers there, then don’t even park the car. Just keep going.
This is a disagreement-safe zone. Tell me I’m wrong, if you disagree. (It’s moot for me anyway. The nearest beach is 5 hours away)
So there is the rub.
If humans could act responsibly and humanly … there is no reason why we couldn’t keep most things open. Reasonable, sane people would give each other space and be careful not to infect each other.
So you’re right. Uncrowded beaches and parks and stuff would be safe
Except that brings us back to our reality. Have you SEEN the people who are demanding to be exposed to the virus?
Do they appear to be sane, rational or humane?
Those people are pathologically unable to play nice.
… and while they are far from being a majority, the few have always had the ability to ruin things for the many.
In Celestial News –
Seems Betelgeuse is NOT about to explode .
Back in late 2019 astronomers noticed the Star had suddenly faded in brightness getting people who follow such things pretty excited.
By February though, it had brightened again. Observations also showed that it has not dimmed in a uniform manor (darker on the bottom) and the darkness is across ALL spectrum of emissions which is more consistent with something being between us and the star.
Through process of elimination they have decided that Betelgeuse emitted a great puff of dust, something stars like that tend to do.

Native American: Mahk Jchi (Heartbeat Drum Song) — Robbie Robertson & The Red Road Ensemble
Native American: Hina Na Ho (Celebration) — Susan Aglukark

Hu are you?

My 2-second hot take: forget about our incompetent government responses and alllllll the ways they’ve failed us for a minute: the big cities have the highest amount of throughput from international travelers. It’s just natural for *anything* to take hold faster in those hubs. It was no surprise that Seattle was the first spot that COVID-19 appeared in the US.
Unfortunately, this gives agenda-based media the opportunity to convince their main audience in Bumbletown, Middle of Nowhere USA that this is all librull big cityfolk telling lies to disgrace the orange-skinned lord and savior.
So I finally cracked open a bottle of Amarula I bought years go.
It was a wise decision.

So, if you happen to find yourself on a bike in Houston, I’ve spent the last couple of days assembling a map of all the Bike Tags that my fellow Houston cyclists have put down so far.

Each location include the picture that was taken to “tag” a spot. Next rider who finds the tagged location then rides somewhere else and sets up a new tag. Definitely some interesting sights around town, even more than I and my riding buddies had already come across.
I can’t see them on my phone map. I’ll try at a computer later.
Nice!
Good job Ed.
In this serious situation (my diminished wealth, not the pandemic), I’m willing to take risks (not for myself, for you) to make the economy (my bank account) strong again.
The things that matter most in life (my money) are worth dying (you, not me) to protect. Great losses (of your lives, not my finances) are sometimes necessary to maintain a high quality of life (for me).
Well, you’re in luck then.
In just (if something that’s never happened before – a vaccine for a human coronavirus is successful) 18 (to 24 maybe 36 months?) we’ll have been able to vaccinate everyone….then you’ll be morally justified in leaving your house for the first time.
Oh, except that, at best the vaccine will probably be about 50% effective so, you’ll still be willing to let half of those who’ve avoided exposure die. But hey, it’s only money we’re talking about, right?
https://www.businessinsider.com/anderson-cooper-las-vegas-mayor-cnn-interview-2020-4
That’s not an attack on you, Ed. There are people out there who have studied the science, as well as people who have made careers of studying the long history of pandemics. I’ve worked with some of them. The good ones have zero political agenda.
When it comes to saving lives, I’ll stick with their recommendations, based on proven science and history, however inconvenient. I will not listen to people with their own personal or political agendas.
When it comes to finances, I won’t go to disease experts, I’ll again choose people who have proven money expertise and no political agenda.
“Moral superiority” has nothing to do with my take on the irresponsible words and directives coming from people like that Las Vegas mayor or your Lt. Governor. “Innocent people will die, but oh well” is Bond movie villain speak.
And to contradict myslef a bit: this person is not a disease expert (she’s a mathematician), but there’s a lot of rational logic in her suggestions:
http://vihart.com/how-we-reopen/
A lot to absorb, and again – – if Dr. Fauci or Dr. LJ Tan contradicted her, I’d believe them over her.
Also, for the record: nothin’ but love for Ed. If Ed and I are in public arguing about this sometime in 2021, and someone gets aggressively in his face, I’m punching them out, not Ed.
. . . . OK, I’m actually hiding under the table if punches are thrown. But you get the point.

All large summer events have been cancelled by our minister of health. I’m fine with that. However, you can tell those who aren’t. On the Facebook group of one of the events I attend (not the Stampede which has also been cancelled), a person complained about “Dr. Doom” pulling the plug on something that will happen in a few months.
Luckily, this person is in the minority. Most everybody else agrees this is a good idea.

Not just meat, farmers are ploughing up
crops and dumping milk, could be food shortages.
Can someone help me understand the logic of farmers destroying foodstuffs and not distributing them?
It depends on a huge number of things. This is a massive simplification, but as I understand it, it takes a lot of work and money to grow crops. Plus the crops pull nutrients from the soil. If the farmers are going to take a massive loss to try and sell a crop to a market that isn’t there, then tilling it back into the soil will add nutrients for next year’s crop and reduce the fertilizer they have to add. The farmers will likely not need additional farm hands to help either.
Dairy farmers have to dump milk because they can’t store it. They have to milk the cows every day. That is something they can’t avoid, but with no market to sell the milk, the only choice is to dump it.
There are probably hundreds of thousands of family farms in this country. Farmers often make very little money. Now, when the market has cratered, the only help they have gotten is the payroll protection loans and that has been a challenge to get. They need just as much help as restaurant owners and small businesses.
Our food market is going to be very different next year, I expect.
Also, keep in mind, farmers don’t distribute food. They sell it. There are a lot of companies involved in the commodity market. And, there is often not room to stock pile unprocessed goods. So, there has been reduced buying because of that, but mostly because of reduced demand by restaurants, etc. So, even if the price isn’t bad, if no one is buying an shipping, farmers are still screwed.
But prices have greatly dropped. Live cattle for instance has dropped from over $120/lb to $84/lb; corn from about $390/bu to $314/bu; and soy from about $960/bu to $839/bu. Those might not look like huge amounts, but it is more than enough to push many farmers deep into the red.
No, ditto. I just wanted to be mad. Don’t ruin it with actual logic and rational explanations.
It’s what I do
It’s all I do!
😉
Seriously – – that has opened my eye a bit.
I hope that the corporate gigantors and the farming industry can find creative ways to deal with some of that daily excess production, so we’re not simply destroying and discarding food and resources, while also facing a potential shortage.
Also noted: I saw a headline today that the trump admin has ordered Tyson food plants to remain open. I’m confident that the rump administration will mishandle it, but from a high level, this seems like the right call. Just put protections in place for those workers inside the factories.
I guarantee that the farmers hate doing this more than anyone. You don’t do farming to make money. It’s a passion or a family tradition. The farm mega-corporations are a different story, obviously.
There are a lot of reasons why the midwest and farmers are pissed off at the rest of the country. They are tired of being marginalized, ignored, and getting very little help when they need it.
Lost in all this… Early this spring I remember reading an article saying that farmers of certain crops couldn’t harvest them from the fields because trump’s harassment of foreigners at the border had made access to legal, seasonal migrant workers nearly impossible to come by.

Due to a number of recent mass outbreaks of coronavirus at several meat and poultry packing plants, trump has declared these as essential industries and issued an order that protective gear be made available to all plant workers and plants immediately have access to Covid-19 testing.

It is at its core a pop-psychological treatise on how all humans are prone to self-delusion. It goes on to say how presenting facts to people on the opposite side of an issue usually makes people hunker down further into their beliefs rather than making them see things “your way”. And while ranting on social media may make one feel better, it largely has the opposite effect than you hoped. I too believe in the nuanced approach. It would benefit us all to understand how we are prone to logical fallacy and the learn the best ways to communicate our ideas will out playing into them.

Lockdown lingo:
*Coronacoaster*
The ups and downs of your mood during the pandemic. You’re loving lockdown one minute but suddenly weepy with anxiety the next. It truly is “an emotional coronacoaster”.
*Quarantinis*
Experimental cocktails mixed from whatever random ingredients you have left in the house. The boozy equivalent of a store cupboard supper. Southern Comfort and Ribena quarantini with a glacé cherry garnish, anyone? These are sipped at “locktail hour”, ie. wine o’clock during lockdown, which seems to be creeping earlier with each passing week.
*Blue Skype thinking*
A work brainstorming session which takes place over a videoconferencing app. Such meetings might also be termed a “Zoomposium”. Naturally, they are to be avoided if at all possible.
*Le Creuset wrist*
It’s the new “avocado hand” – an aching arm after taking one’s best saucepan outside to bang during the weekly ‘Clap For Carers.’ It might be heavy but you’re keen to impress the neighbours with your high-quality kitchenware.
*Coronials*
As opposed to millennials, this refers to the future generation of babies conceived or born during coronavirus quarantine. They might also become known as “Generation C” or, more spookily, “Children of the Quarn”.
*Furlough Merlot*
Wine consumed in an attempt to relieve the frustration of not working. Also known as “bored-eaux” or “cabernet tedium”.
*Coronadose*
An overdose of bad news from consuming too much media during a time of crisis. Can result in a panicdemic.
*The elephant in the Zoom*
The glaring issue during a videoconferencing call that nobody feels able to mention. E.g. one participant has dramatically put on weight, suddenly sprouted terrible facial hair or has a worryingly messy house visible in the background.
*Quentin Quarantino*
An attention-seeker using their time in lockdown to make amateur films which they’re convinced are funnier and cleverer than they actually are.
*Covidiot* or *Wuhan-ker*
One who ignores public health advice or behaves with reckless disregard for the safety of others can be said to display “covidiocy” or be “covidiotic”. Also called a “lockclown” or even a “Wuhan-ker”.
*Goutbreak*
The sudden fear that you’ve consumed so much wine, cheese, home-made cake and Easter chocolate in lockdown that your ankles are swelling up like a medieval king’s.
*Antisocial distancing*
Using health precautions as an excuse for snubbing neighbours and generally ignoring people you find irritating.
*Coughin’ dodger*
Someone so alarmed by an innocuous splutter or throat-clear that they back away in terror.
*Mask-ara*
Extra make-up applied to “make one’s eyes pop” before venturing out in public wearing a face mask.
*Covid-10*
The 10lbs in weight that we’re all gaining from comfort-eating and comfort-drinking. Also known as “fattening the curve”.
…and finally: One sentence to sum up 2020, so far: At one point this week, 1 loo roll was worth more than a barrel of crude oil!

You know how bad they say Covid in Georgia has gotten?
Well death rate is worse than is being reporting. My neighbor’s daughter is an intern in a Hospital in Rome, Ga. she reports that patients who are brought in and not deemed not likely to survive are NOT being given Covid-19 tests because there just aren’t enough tests to go around.
Since they haven’t received the “official” test, state doesn’t count them as having died from the virus.
That’s alarming in many many ways.

I don’t know either of them. . . I hate celebrity personal life gossip. . . But this does seem kind of like a shitty play.
You know, Neil Gaiman occupies this weird place in my mind. I’m only somewhat acquainted with his works, the first issue of Sandman and the American Gods series. I’ve talked at length with Geoffry Notkin, the Meteorite Man at Mike’s house and he was a childhood friend of Neil. He played bass in a punk band that Neil was a part of. When Teresa and I ran into him at Phoenix Comicon a few years later he had produced a movie about Neil. It is sad about his relationship, but I end up thinking more about the people around him than the man himself.
I never knew that the Meteorite Man was an old friend of Neil’s.
Ryah has met him. He certainly seems like a sweet, charming guy. And he has written some great stuff. I highly recommend the Sandman books and Good Omens – – co-written with Terry Pratchett.

Crap joke for the day:
While riding my Harley, I swerved to avoid hitting a deer, lost control and landed in a ditch, severely banging my head.
Dazed and confused I crawled out of the ditch to the edge of the road when a shiny new convertible pulled up with a very beautiful woman who asked, “Are you okay?
As I looked up, I noticed she was wearing a low-cut blouse with a cleavage to die for.
“I’m okay I think.” I replied as I pulled myself up to the side of the car to get a closer look.
She said, “Get in and I’ll take you home, so I can clean and bandage that nasty scrape on your head.”
“That’s nice of you,” I answered, “But I don’t think my wife will like me doing that!”
“Oh, come now, I’m a nurse,” she insisted. “I need to see if you have any more scrapes and then treat them properly.”
Well, she was really pretty and very persuasive. Being sort of shaken and weak, I agreed, but repeated, “I’m sure my wife won’t like this.”
We arrived at her place which was just few miles away and, after a couple of cold beers and the bandaging, I thanked her and said, “I feel a lot better, but I know my wife is going to be really upset so I’d better go now.”
Don’t be silly!” she said with a smile. “Stay for a while. She won’t know anything. By the way, where is she?”
“My guess is that she’s still in the ditch.”

Wait, are you saying there are British actors who aren’t evil?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7gR7EYjcP8
This ad is brilliant. There was apparently a whole series of them made with these actors.
There are three components that make up a bad guy:
1. Dark trench coat
2. Physical manifestation of some sort (e.g., scar on the face)
3. Foreign accent
If it’s not a British actor, it will be a German or a French actor (or some other “foreign” country). Lazy writing is as lazy writing does.

I had planned on going last month but the DMV has been closed for six weeks. Now my license is expired and I am out of options.

That’s interesting, the DMV here so far doesn’t have a planned date to reopen for the public. So far, they are focusing limited resources to support licensing for commercial drivers.

Once again, im reminded of how out of touch with video games I am. The only ones I really knew anything about were the ones related to NES games. And Undertale.
Agreed – I know almost none of those games. Personally I think it’s cheating to slot a position (actually most of them) to a game series.
Also, without the original Wing Commander (and Wing Commander 2) anywhere to be found on this list, much less not at #1, means this is seriously fake news. Not to mention the first couple of Warcraft games, those were some truly ground breaking pieces of gaming music that are probably older than whatever punk thought they had the right to compile such a list.

Watched Antman last night, enjoyed it, certainly not one of the lesser MCU films for me.
My lovely husband insists on doing the grocery shopping. My husband doesn’t cook though, so sometimes he veers from my shopping list when he doesn’t understand what I ask for.
This morning before going out, he looked at the list. I decided I want to roast a chicken this week so I put whole chicken on the list. He looks at it and goes, I don’t even know what that is or where I would find it in the store.
I admit, I laughed at him.
Let’s see what I get when he comes home
(For context, we usually get chicken breasts, not the entire chicken)
Spring snow. How I expected thee.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the great mothers and also to Samuel L. Jackson.
We watched Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows last night, which I’d never seen. I actually like it much better than the first. It’s kindof a shame they stopped at 2. I can’t help but to compare to Cumberbatch’s Sherlock, which is unfortunate, because RDJ is really good in the role, he’s just not Benedict.
Martin Freeman is always excellent, but Jude Law is probably a better fit for the classic Watson character, as written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
This Moriarty, played by Jared Harris, is much better. IMHO. Sure, he was fun in the show too, but a bit too over-the-top with the crazypants.
I’m standing in a line about 30 people deep of carry out orders at the Italian restaurant. About 1 in 4 of us has a mask. Not much distancing. Rolling the dice with other peoples lives.
For those following along at home:
I was there for 1 hour waiting for my to-go food. FIne, it’s Mother’s Day. I should have been expecting that kind of thing. It’s fine. I’d say about 25% total of the many patrons who came and went wore masks, and none of the staff did.
The worst part was when other customers started getting cranky and yelling at each other. Luckily, it didn’t progress any further than that.
Ok. So has anyone else noticed the three-winged transport ship with the smiley face front in the Clone Wars show? Anakin has flown it a few times, but not frequently.
It looks like an early model of the stolen imperial transport ship that our heroes use to fly to Endor in ROTJ – – just with a smiley face grill. Anyone?
Hmmm:
https://variety.com/lists/best-tv-shows-how-to-watch/
We actually don’t watch a lot of TV. Of that list I’ve only seen two in their entirety. Some of them I’ve see a few complete seasons, some only the occasional episode, most not at all.
Ha, I say! Ha!
A quote from the article: “I was six years old when “Six Feet Under” first aired so it’s safe to say I missed its original run.”
A few of those I’ve seen. . . of the rest, there are 1 or 2 that I’d personally consider tackling.
As with all lists, ymmv. Some I’ve watched, some I haven’t, some I am completely uninterested in, and some I don’t agree belong on the list.

A friend’s brother is a Gastroenterologist in Florida. Florida has decided elective surgeries are back on so he had 30 colonoscopies scheduled for today.

Crap joke for the day:
Just arrived home after seeing a good friend take his last breath, I was honoured to have been there at the end. This was a man when had dodged a snipers bullet in the Falklands, had survived many armed patrols in Northern Ireland. A man who had walked away from a high speed motorbike crash. At the hospital, just before he went, he beckoned me toward him, he couldn’t speak due to the pipes and tubes that were attached to him so I moved closer as he pointed at his mouth. I said I didn’t know what he wanted and asked if he could write, he nodded vigorously so I passed him some paper from his bedside cabinet and took the pen from my pocket. Unfortunately, as he was writing, he stopped, the pen fell to the floor, the machine that he was attached to started to make that ominous monotone that tells you its all over. The paper dropped from his hand as the nurses rushed in and tried in vain to revive him but all to no avail, he now knew all the answers to all the questions ever asked, including the ultimate. I returned to my car in the car park with heavy heart, trying to avoid looking into the faces of the mixed patients, visitors and hospital workers. I somehow managed to get to the car without breaking up, and, as I fumbled for my keys I rediscovered the note from the recently deceased. By now it was all crumpled up so I attempted to iron it out on the bonnet. It just looked gibberish so I returned it to my coat pocket. I have now got home and was about to throw it away but the though hit me, it might be some sort of final message with hidden importance, there are no spaces between the words, it just appears to be a jumble of letters. I decided to share it on Facebook to see if anyone could decipher it, I never was any good at anagrams or conundrums so here it is in its entirety (I’m not sure whether or not he finished before he shuffled from our mortal coil ) it says “GETOFFMYFUCKINGOXYGENPIPEYOUFATBAST”…..any ideas?
Thanks for the congrats, amigos y amigas.
I will now get back to my regularly scheduled crankiness.

I know there are all kinds of annoying MFers in the world, but over the past few years, I’ve really become especially unimpressed with the IT variety of “Busy, I’m so busy. No time because I’m too busy. Oh, look at you slackers eating lunch. I’m too busy. We have a ping-pong table but I’m too busy. I’m the only one who works around here. Busy busy busy.”

So I finished the 2nd book in nK Jemisin’s big trilogy – – The Obelisk Gate. What a ride.
The first book was very impressive, but the ending was a gut punch, and kind of disturbing. This one also had some seriously fucked up moments, but was a great expansion of the world and mythos and story. I am excited to read part 3.

I tried Alan Moore’s Promethea, because. . . well. . . it’s Alan Moore. . . and I dropped it after the 2nd issue. He is one of the true greats, but this is awful. The writing is just terrible. Of course, I just stumbled across a major Clone Wars spoiler in the article :-/
But it makes an interesting case for reading the novelization. https://screenrant.com/revenge-sith-novel-best-star-wars-story/
I’ve only read novelizations for the 1977 Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back – – which were interesting but just OK – – plus a handful of EU books and comics, so I dunno.
Well, I definitely have to agree the novelizations of the prequels greatly elevated the material. I know I read them all prior to seeing the movies and appreciated the movies more because of it.
I know I tried to read the original Star Wars novelization, but didn’t manage to get but halfway through it before giving up. I don’t think I ever read novels for Empire or Return. Read a lot of the EU novels starting with the Zahn trilogy. They started off solid, but progressed further and further into incoherence and I finally gave up somewhere late in the Yuzan Vong mega arc. They at least took the original characters in some natural directions and introduced a lot of new interesting ones.
Still, while I don’t care much for what Disney did with it, I do agree a “clean slate” was needed to try to tell new Star Wars tales set 30 years after Return of the Jedi.
Ed said pretty much everything I would have said. 😀
I’m fine with the clean slate approach too.
Hmmm:
https://t.co/gXjwE5ZJxJ
True…. but I think anti-campiness has also been the movie-making trend.
Which is why we got semi-realworld takes on Batman and the darker Justice League. Even the MCU has done its best to avoid anything campy, except by design.
I don’t think it is the fear of camp. It’s just that so much of that has already been done, why retread the same old paths? People want something different. Some friends and I have had this discussion before, especially around the reboot of BSG.
“Anti-camp” – – while a great name for a Punk band – – may not have been the right term. I think the past 20+ years have overall been more about than gritty and dark than the shiny and campy. BSG is a great example.
There’s good camp “Resident Evil, Austin Powers etc.”
and bad camp “Batman & Robin, Aquaman etc.”
To me, the difference is razor-thin. Mostly I think it is a combination of the actor’s buy-in and if the scenes are creatively funny or just a lazy handwave of plot resolution.
I’m really not sure on the camp/anti-camp front, but I can say (with more surity than I can say in most things in my life) that “people” and especially Hollywood are not, in any way shape or form, wanting something different and/or afraid to retread the same old paths. Reboots, re-imaginings, re-envisionings, modernizations, etc. are everywhere and not about to go away any time soon. It pains me to no end. But I have at least come to accept it (although I will never relish it or even enjoy it).
No, just no:

Nah
So my NAS enclosure is getting rather long in the tooth and Zyxel no longer update it. So when I saw a new low end model from Synology was on offer from Amazon I thought it was time to get a new one.
However since it’s a different make, I can’t just put the HDs From the old enclosure in the new one and have it read the HDs.
So not looking forward to copying over a terabyte of data over WiFi..
Now you’re just making up words.
Are the drives as old as the enclosure? Would it be better to just get new drives at this point and then be able to copy from the old enclosure to the new one? Disk space is pretty damn cheap now, all things considered.
No, they have been replaced over the years as drives failed (RAID 1 is good for that).
Plus I would still have to copy the files over wifi as my mesh router only has ethernet ports, one for internet and other other for the old NAS, everything else has to connect via wifi.
Not a good sign, when a third of the space is given over to 143,000 files.

We’ve just begun our full Star Wars theatrical re-watch in timeline order (IDK yet if we’re going to watch the Clone Wars animated movie, IDK yet if we’ll save Rogue One and Solo til the end, or if we’ll watch them before Star Wars 1977).
So, The Phantom Menace. . . Goddamn, this is a lot worse than I remembered. It’s about 25% awesome, 65% pretty bad, and 10% OMFGWTF.

The rank stupidity just swarms around you like gnats. Only more annoying than gnats. The script and the movie needed a ruthless editor in the worst way.
The good:
The podrace.
Every single moment Darth Maul is onscreen.
The emperor’s machinations.
And look. Jake Lloyd was no childstar prodigy, but he really wasn’t disastrously bad.
I can’t believe that the consensus feels that Attack of the Clones is worse than this. That’s not how I remember it.
My heart is sad at you being forced to watch New Hope with all the special edition crap.
That movie nearly made me give up on the franchise.
I saw it in the theater and have never watched it again.
I may be misremembering but it seems like that was a time period where Hollywood decided films needed an inane comic sidekick. Wasn’t that the same year that they surprised us with “Short Round” … Indie’s unexplained, child co-star?
Short Round pre-dated Jar Jar by about 15-16 years. Same concept, although Short Round was not nearly as ubiquitous onscreen – – or as painfully unfunny/annoying – – as Jar Jar.
TPM isn’t a terrible movie, but I really don’t need to sit through it ever again.
Really, I don’t believe all of you who say that Attack of the Clones is worse than The Phantom Menace. I’ll confirm my modern opinion in the near future.
Trust me, AOTC is so so much worse that TPM. I will definitely die on that hill.

Morning Pan
Lots to do before our virtual launch this afternoon. I don’t even know where to start.
What I learnt today after watching the first episode of Nat Geo’s new historical drama. That France still has control over a few islands off the coast of Canada;
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Pierre_and_Miquelon
Oh and the guy who played Shaggy might be the bad guy, WTF!
I always liked Matthew Lillard.
At least until they remove his mask and see who he REALLY is.
And France might have gotten away with it too… if it weren’t for those meddling kids Eh.
Happy birthday, Roaming Asshat!
Happy birthday!

Welp, posted author readings to YouTube. Made a sheet to check off correct answers for our trivia questions. Did a personal post about the launch. Did some website updates.
So far, a productive morning.
I found this amusing. I’m not sure if I was suppose to.

So. Damn. Good.
Ok … I need to activate the powers of the Deadpan Hive mind.
I want to show some young 20 somethings that we DID in fact have good movies in the 80’s and 90’s.
Looking for good solid films of almost any genre … except horror. Not really that time of the year.
I can say that they have seen Brazil, Baron von Munchausen and Heathers as well as the Star Wars films.
Any films come to mind?
What was the Chicago Gangster film with Sean Connery? I recall that was good. Wonder if it would hold up to the passage of time?
80s and 90s, eh?
Yes, The Untouchables with Sean Connery is a great movie.
I recall finding Platoon to be dreary and depressing – – but – – Platoon.
Anything James Cameron:
Titanic.
The Abyss.
Aliens.
Both Terminator movies.
Just about anything Spielberg (too many to list).
Army of Darkness is not actually horror, even if the first 2 Evil Dead films were.
Wayne’s World.
The Doors.
The Princess Bride is obvious, but I’m sure they’ve seen it.
Clerks.
The Thing.
Big Trouble in Little China.
Escape From New York.
Raising Arizona.
Barton Fink.
Bladerunner.
Braveheart.
First Blood (forget the rest).
Good Morning Vietnam.
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.
A Fish Called Wanda.
A Fish Called Wanda.
A Fish Called Wanda.
A Fish Called Wanda.
A Fish Called Wanda.
Thief.
The Last of the Mohicans.
Big.
Philadelphia.
Fight Club.
Good list to get the brain going.
The Terminator was a pivitol movie for me at the time but last time I watched it … oof.
Some others there I loved but I do wonder if they would still be as good.
Glad to see that we have watched a bunch of those.
I WAS wondering about “A Fish Called Wanda”. I remeber it as being a brilliant and funny film but someone else was telling me it had some sexual content that might be uncomfortable to watch with family members. I don’t really recall anything like that but haven’t seen it in probably 2 decades.
There are a few scenes in A Fish Called Wanda that would cause everyone to squirm in their seats if watched with family.
Woof, that was tiring.
What was tiring, btw?
Another one bites the dust.

It almost sounds plausible until the gets fact checked to the 7th level of hell.
OK, I only read the top 3 comments, but all 3 were comedy gold.
I have zero reason to defend Ace of Base (spoiler). I also find it plausible that at least one of the members had previously been in a nazi punk band and held nazi beliefs.
Everything else is a stretch. Is he hinting that Ace of Base led to America’s current wannabe-Fuhrer? Yeeesh.

Hopefully a go in just under 3 hours
I’m watching live here. Weather has been dicey in Central Florida today. We’ll see what happens. If I’m lucky I get to see a little light heading up and a streak of cloud. Close enough to make it worth while to walk outside. Would have to drive an hour or so to get a really closeup view.
No launch today..bugger.
Rescheduled for Saturday.
Which actually works well for me. One of my coworkers has a house on the Banana River across from the launch site. Now she can have a launch party on Saturday. Score one for me!

But I was going to go into Toshi Station to hang with my friends… uh, I mean pick up some power converters!

Locus Award nominees are posted. https://locusmag.com/2020/05/2020-locus-awards-finalists/
There’s one southwestern US author whose name shows up every year on every major awards ballot. . . . I encountered her at a few long ago cons, and she was always so unpleasant, that I just never had any interest in reading her stuff. Never cranky at me personally, just generally uncool. I won’t drag her in public – – I don’t even have any gossipy bad behavior stories – – but feel free to ask me in private. Good for her getting accolades for what must be quality writing, I guess.
If it’s the same person I’ve met and dealt with on occasion, we’re kind of on the same page.

A very powerful commentary on the violence erupting all over the US.
And wow, there’s a mall not far from here that’s apparently under siege by looters.
And look. The violence that has erupted time and time again in the wake of injustice is not something I can ever condone, but I can see how desperation leads people there. I will not get on my high horse about those people.
I WILL look down hard at the opportunist scum who see opportunities for destruction as fun. As a chance to get free shot because Target has become a free-for-all.
And BTW, there have been productive violent protests in the past (the American Revolution is one example). But standing up against an opporessive government is not accomplished by smashing in the Apple Store’s windows for a new tablet. Or just for the fun of destroying something.
There may be historical cases where looting and smashing were valid parts of a larger protest. This isn’t one of them.

JW: To the Stars
A coming of age film that is really rather good.
Two versions, colour and b/w, get the b/w or turn the colour off on your tv..,
And I did wanna mention:
We watched Attack of the Clones last night.
It’s truly one of the worst love stories ever put to film. The negative chemistry is cringeworthy. Anakin is creepy AF. I wish they could have explained what Padme saw in him.
But other than that and a few terrible jokes and awkward moments, the movie is actually really pretty good. Dooku is a pretty great villain, Obi-Wan’s investigation is excellent, and Yoda and Mace Windu do cool stuff.
I don’t agree with what you guys all said. It’s 100x better than TPM.
It *is* better than TPM, but only marginally.
Passing thru because I could smell your wrongness all the way over here. No Star Wars film… and I mean none… is worse than Attack of the Clones.
And I’ve seen Rise of Skywalker.
That is all.
Morning Pan
Hubby and I were talking last night. As strange as it seems, we are actually healthier during this pandemic, than before. Because he works at a school, he was constantly bringing home colds, flu, etc. Now that he’s not dealing with kids face to face, we haven’t had so much as a sniffle.
I don’t know what to think about all that.
I’d say they should install hand sanitizer everywhere, like in hospitals, but I realize you can’t have liquid dispensers all over a building full of teenagers.
It boggles my mind that they are opening schools in the U.K. today as if children don’t spread infections.
No logic. People are just “over” it.
Crap joke for the day:
Walking home after a girls’ night out, two women pass a graveyard and stop to pee. The first woman has nothing to wipe with, so she uses her underwear and tosses it. Her friend, however, finds a ribbon on a wreath, so she uses that. The next day, the first woman’s husband phones the second woman’s husband, furious: “My wife came home last night without her panties!” “That’s nothing,” says the other. “Mine came back with a card stuck between her butt cheeks that said, ‘From all of us at the fire station, we’ll never forget you.'”
This joke is coming to get you, Barbara.
Spoke to my grandmother. She’s having trouble getting her head around this whole pandemic thing. She knows nobody has visited her in awhile, but can’t understand why. I’m sure she knows, they do have tv and conversations, she just doesn’t remember.
Also, today is the first time I spoke to her and she completely forgot my Boo existed. She went on about the fact I never had any kids and she needed great grand kids. Once I reminded her, she sort of remembered, but doesn’t remember ever seeing either one of the girls.
I actually don’t call her that often any more because it gets harder each time.
*hugs* I can’t even imagine 102.

Van, I have a question.
I know what the penny dropped means. I’m reading a book and the author will use the term the dime dropped, which, by context, seems to mean the same thing.
Has inflation hit this saying? Do people in the UK say the dime dropped too, or is this a case of an American author not getting his sayings straight?
The latter I suspect, penny is still used over here .
Hadn’t heard “penny dropped” but I have heard “drop a dime” which means to “report someone” or “turn them in” (because payphones used to cost a dime. Also, there used to be payphones.)
Does “penny dropped”’mean the same thing?
Nope:
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/penny-drops
Do they mean it as an exaggeration?
No.
I don’t mean do the British use it as an exaggeration. I mean did the author use it as an exaggeration. For example, if the penny drops means that someone suddenly understands an idea, would the author using the dime drops mean something like an extreme understanding of an idea or an extremely sudden understanding of an idea. The author could be deliberately toying with the phrase rather than failing to understand it.
No, I don’t think so. It’s The Magicians, the TV show is based on. I’m enjoying the show, the book is kind of meh. I truly believe the author just didn’t know what he was saying.

Well, I must confess, never before today had I heard the phrase “the penny drops” nor could have guessed at it’s meaning. I’m gonna have to ask around to see if anyone I know locally has heard the phrase.
So. . . . It’s not at all controversial to say that Revenge of the Sith is the best of the prequels. I will take it a step further and say that it’s actually quite a good movie. Sure. . . . there are quite a few clunky moments. . . . but overall, it still really works.
Not better than any of the Original Trilogy or Rogue One. Probably not better overall than The Last Jedi.
As for the complaint that Anakin “turned too fast,” I say hogwash. The movie establishes that he is obsessed with saving Padme, and for years, was constantly being brainwashed by the most powerful Sith of all time.
Are you implying that he had SITHilitic dementia?
Or just a Sith Sense?
Perhaps he just needed some Vader Eye for the Jedi.
It’s an objectively better film than Return of the Jedi.
“Probably not better overall than The Last Jedi.” You fool! It doesn’t touch Last Jedi.
Regardless, really glad you enjoyed it.

I’m curious to see what you all think about this. . . Especially from a small Canadian publisher’s perspective.
I kinda see the publisher’s point – – to an extent – – but they’re transparently just trying to just kill the Archive altogether by suing it into oblivion.
This is… interesting.
I once said how ebooks in libraries works for publishers. I likened it to songs on a radio.
While I do understand what they are trying to do, it wouldn’t have hurt them to ask. We may have been willing to give them permission for some of our back catalogue. But, since they didn’t even ask for permission to copyrighted material…
It’s not just publishers but authors who get royalties on those books that are affected. While I suppose you could say the big name authors and publishers will not be hurt as badly (think Metallica and their downloadable songs lawsuit), however, that doesn’t make it right.
Working with a publisher who only breaks even, that’s with getting arts grants from the government, losing any income does hurt those smaller identities that don’t have the big sales to fall back on.
I’ve also made it no secret that I, personally, do not pirate movies, music, games, tv, etc, but I do understand the mindset.
Had they stuck to books that have their copyright dropped or out dated, and thus more need to keep archived, I might be more sympathetic. Anything that is still in the public market thought, not so much.
Also, as strange as it sounds, during Covid-19, our sales have actually dropped dramatically. Which is interesting considering 75% of our sales are in e format.
*shrug* That’s speaking for me. I can’t speak entirely for Tyche as I’m an employee but I have a feeling my boss would feel similar.

Switched it up from Star Wars to Matrix: Reloaded tonight. Still good. Not quiiiite as good as I remember, but entertaining. I’d remembered the effects being realistic, but wow, it’s dated. More like a video game than a blockbuster movie, by today’s standards.
The plot is still basically non-existent, but the action scenes are still fun.
I’m still quite fond of Reloaded.
One thing that I’m not looking forward to about Matrix 4 is that it’s going to remind me they made a 3rd Matrix movie. Of course, the fashion in Hollywood these days is to make a sequel that ignores everything but the franchise’s first film, so who knows.
I think my issue with the first movie is that it had the perfect ending, sequels would just take away from it. Having seen both sequels I stand by that statement. Now I wouldn’t have been adverse about new stories based in the universe of the Matrix, just without Neo. Which reminds me I really need to see the Animatrix.
I found today that the Animatrix is included in HBO MAX right now. Need to watch that anthology again some time.
Which I also found I get an no extra cost as an AT&T U-Verse gigabit tier subscriber.
Seems there’s several ways for AT&T customers to get MAX for “free” if they are already an AT&T customer, so it’s worth looking into.
https://about.att.com/story/2020/hbo_max_launches_may_27.html
I remember the Animatrix shorts being ok. Might be worth a rewatch.
I’m with Ed on this one. Reloaded felt like an incredible setup for what could have been a killer final act, but the resolution in the 3rd movie was so disappointing.
Good info Ed. I might try and get HBO Max set up.

Seems their is an Internet “personality” whose schtick is to go to protests and annoy people on camera until they finally loose their composer. This personality then edits out every thing but the person losing their cool and puts that on YouTube as an example of the sort of people at the protest.
So for some time, people have tried to get these videos taken down because they support hate and violence but YouTube has ignored it due to celebrity.
Enter smart people. These folks have started following this person around and everytime an “Interview” begins they play Disney music very loudly. This doesn’t interfere with the interview but when the clips are posted to YouTube, the algorithms hear that Disney music and instantly remove the videos for copyright infringement.
Revenge of the nerds.

CW – Jean Michel Jarre – 1986 Concert using Downtown Houston buildings as the stage. Definitely at the top of my list of concerts I regret not getting to experience live.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRzzF-WObYE
I remember seeing snippets of this back in the day, but where the hell could I have seen it? VHS??
Fun fact: my friends who got me into his music pronounced his name “Gene Michael Jarrey.”
I wasn’t that bad. But I made the mistake of saying all three names separately whereas it should be said with Jean Michel sort of as one long word.
The #1 missed concert event for me wasn’t this one though. I had the chance to see him when I was an exchange student in Madrid about a year or two after this concert and I passed it up because I figured that, as much as I liked his music, it would probably not be that exciting to see someone playing a keyboard live. It was about a month later I found out about the Houston concert. Been kicking myself in the ass ever since then.

Looks like Warren Ellis has joined a long line of dirt bags, do a search on Twitter for his name:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/graphicpolicy.com/2020/06/16/cameron-stewart-and-warren-ellis-accused-of-sexual-misconduct/amp/
The claims in that article against Cameron Stewart seem very credible.
However, that article alone makes a very flimsy case against Warren Ellis. I won’t assume anything, but I’m gonna need more info, before I cancel him.
Seems pretty weak.
Article talks about more substantial claims against someone else and …then dumps his name in the article. Thus doing a “guilt by mental association”. Doesn’t give any info on Ellis wrong doing, just a vague “someone said something”.

Headed to the city today
https://www.quora.com/Who-is-the-Necromancer-in-The-Hobbit
Interesting back and forth on this from the Tolkien scholars.
I did see an article today from a small comics site with some women calling Warren Ellis a “Bluebeard.” I’d never heard that term before. . . I’m still a bit confused. Does it mean he hits on lots of women and lies about the one(s) he’s currently with? That he hits on/dates lots of women, then drops them abruptly?
I will not dismiss anyone who felt victimized – – by him or anyone. I will listen closely everything that is said with no assumptions. If he’s victimized anyone or used his position of Established Authority to pressure women into sexual situations, then he is scum, and should be booed.
But if it turns out he’s just sleazy. . .? I’m not going to cancel a creator for being a relationship cheater or for hitting on girls. I might lose respect for him as a person, sure, and maybe wouldn’t seek them out at a Con or big event, but I won’t stop reading or supporting them.
More notes, then I shut up and listen:
Victims must be protected from predators. No abuse of any kind is ever acceptable. Ever. Hard stop.
I can cite cases where people were led to believe terrible things about me (not in public). The assumptions and horrible backlash I received were horrible. I will never get over the damage done. The “women don’t lie about this stuff” claim makes my blood boil.
I don’t want to be a pig and defend anyone in the wrong. Educate me, if my info or perspective are incomplete.
I have never even heard of Warren Ellis before and know nothing about the details of the allegations (nor for that matter do I care). But the term “bluebeard” to me means someone who sets up and perpetually kills (literally) his wives (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluebeard). It’s a pretty common tale. And the fact that it would even come up as a term for someone means (to me) that the motivations behind this are far, far, far, far, far beyond what is actually going on. Someone is exaggerating to be certain.
This is name calling for the sake of ruining a reputation.
Given that end goal, I won’t be piling on until I hear some facts.

2.65. Plus I live in an area which isn’t a hot spot (which I feel is more of an influence than most of the questions). My county has only seen 876 cases which makes me an extremely, extremely, extremely fortunate case indeed. I feel like questions about where you live would trump most of the other questions they ask.
I got 2.54
But, this thing is not taking into account race- which is unfortunately, a risk factor. Could the race card *really* stem from a socio-economical level that has a generalization of known chronic health factors? I dont knkw- too soon to have a large enlugh data set and clinical info.

Because I’m a nice person 😉 I did some interior book formatting and ebook conversions for a couple of my friends who wanted to self publish. Last night, one of them asked if I would do the same for someone they knew. I couldn’t decide if I was being taken advantage of or not so I said I would do it – for a fee.
Was that wrong? I don’t want to take advantage of them so I asked for a fee much below the going rate.
(no this is not a conflict of interest for my work for… long and boring reasons.)
Doing favors for friends that you have a personal connection to that are the kinds of things you do as part of your job, that’s one thing. Friends of friends trying to get a free ride is something different.
Being an engineer, I don’t run into many opportunities for people I know to be in a need to ask me for “free work”. Closest is probably my brother, who I help out some times talking through the mechanical considerations of some of the set design work that he does for the theater company he works for (or did, pre-COVID).
Personally, I don’t like asking for friends to do things for me that I know are what they do for a living. Maybe it’s in part because I know I’m unlikely to be able to offers my skills in return for them later. I’ve known a few people who end up letting themselves get taken advantage of in these cases.
I actually like what I do, so that helps. Also, I don’t mind doing favours for friends, and expect nothing in return – except maybe beer or scotch 😉 After all, they are friends. It’s once you get to friends of friends, mild acquaintances, and such that it gets murky.
No I don’t think you were wrong.
Of course that is coming from someone who gives old tech away with the proviso that I won’t act as tech support…
What the other guys said.
I think you did the right thing.
If I learned nothing else from my freelancing days, it’s that people will not place more value on your time and skills than you do. Frankly, I feel you should have told your friend either: “Sure I’ll do it. Here is my rate for this.”
Or
“Sure I’ll do this. Normally THIS is what I charge but as a favor to you I will do it for this discounted rate.”
This (A) makes them realize what a solid you did them when you gave them your service for free.
(B) helps them to understand that you are helping their friend as a personal favor to THEM.
The very few times I have ever ask a professional friend of mine to cut another friend a deal, I made it clear that it was actually a favor for
Me and that I would make it up to them.
Yeah. I told them I would do it and gave a rate. I know somebody else who does this sort of thing so could get a fee to base on. She charges in US funds so I took her rate but said it was in CDN. That way I’m lower but still charging.
*shrug*. We’ll see if anything comes of it
RIP Ian Holm, a face I’m sure you’ll recognise:
https://t.co/DZmeEWsKmO
🙁
While his role as Bilbo is probably his most recognizable at this point, I first connected with him through The Fifth Element and found his other work from there.
He was a wonderful Claudius in Kenneth Branagh’s 4-hour Hamlet. You also can’t forget his role in the first Alien.
Amazing career. Hopefully a great life. Terrible loss.
So so so Many great roles.
As Ash he leaves us with this great line -“I won’t lie to you about your chances … you have my sympathies.”

Crap joke for the day:
A fellow dies, goes to hell, and is surprised when confronted by a room full of beautiful blondes and kegs of beer. He asks a nearby demon if this is really hell, and what was so bad about the place.”Well,” said the demon, “the kegs all have holes in the bottoms, and the blondes don’t!”
Further to an earlier conversation, we just had an email from Library of Canada Archives to see if we would contribute any of our (e)books. We are giving them copies of our entire catalogue. Showing we are not opposed to archiving our books, we’re just opposed to it being done without our permission.
Next you’ll be doing formatting and ebook conversions for free!

Crap joke for the day:
A duck walks into a pub and orders a pint of beer and a ham sandwich.
The barman looks at him and says,
“Hang on! You’re a duck.”
“I see your eyes are working,” replies the duck.
“And you can talk!” Exclaims the barman.
“I see your ears are working, too,” says the duck.
“Now if you don’t mind, can I have my beer and my sandwich please?”
“Certainly, sorry about that,”
Says the barman as he pulls the duck’s pint.
“It’s just we don’t get many ducks in this pub. What are you doing around this way?”
“I’m working on the building site across the road,” Explains the duck.
“I’m a plasterer.”
The flabbergasted barman cannot believe the duck and wants to learn more, but takes the hint when the duck pulls out a newspaper from his bag and proceeds to read it.
So, the duck reads his paper, drinks his beer, eats his sandwich, bids the barman good day and leaves.
The same thing happens for two weeks.
Then one day the circus comes to town.
The ringmaster comes into the pub for a pint and the barman says to him
“You’re with the circus, aren’t you? Well, I know this duck that could be just brilliant in your circus. He talks, drinks beer, eats sandwiches, reads the newspaper and everything!”
“Sounds marvellous,” says the ringmaster, handing over his business card.
“Get him to give me a call.”
So the next day when the duck comes into the pub the barman says,
“Hey Mr Duck, I reckon I can line you up with a top job, paying really good money.”
“I’m always looking for the next job,”
Says the duck.
“Where is it?”
“At the circus,”
Says the barman.
“The circus?”
Repeats the duck.
“That’s right,”
Replies the barman.
“The circus?”
The duck asks again.
“With the big tent?”
“Yeah,” the barman replies.
“With all the animals who live in cages, and performers who live in caravans?” says the duck.
“Of course,” the barman replies.
“And the tent has canvas sides and a big canvas roof with a hole in the middle?” persists the duck.
“That’s right!” says the barman.
The duck shakes his head in amazement, and says .. . ……
“What the fuck would they want with a plasterer??!”
Have I ever mentioned this bloody weird film that I’ve only seen once decades ago:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Birthday,_Wanda_June
JW: Escape from New York
Was a remastered copy and it looked all shined and new.
We watched the “un-shined” version just last week.
Loved it for its intense 80s-ness and no frill “plot”
The computer bank of flash lights did amuse me and my sister commented that the credits font looked very 80s
Mt favorite moment is when Lee Van Cleef picks up his mobile phone and it’s the size of a jet airliner.
So we spent the past 2 nights watching Lawrence of Arabia. I hadn’t seen it in 20 years.
It felt more dated during this viewing than it did in 2000-ish, but many things held up really well – – some of the visuals, the acting performances, the panoramas. . . It is still a good movie, and deservedly a classic.
I assume that woke culture will eventually demand this one be deleted.
Or remade…?
It was good

Happy Dad’s Day to all you crazy dads
Out here!
And a special day of love and relaxation for my Main Squeeze.
So there is an alternative to goodreads:
https://thestorygraph.com/index.html
The main site is being updated but you can use the beta site. You can also import your goodreads library. If you are tempted I would suggest doing this on a computer as trying to do it on my iPhone is just an exercise in frustration.
Happy Father’s Day to anyone who’s ever loved or been loved by a Dad.
And to celebrate, we watched a movie about Immortan Joe, who is a pretty terrible father, in every way.
It’s somehow only the 2nd time I’ve watched this movie. Just bloody brilliant.
The original Quake was released on this day in 1996.
Eeek!
I still haven’t moved on yet from Doom 2.

The twitter rambling/sidetracking is a bit much, but she makes a number of fascinating points, in pure Cyber-techno-thriller terms. Two facinating points here:
1. In 2016, he wanted to con thousands of marks out of election campaign contributions, didn’t actually want to win the election.
2. The Tulsa event was also a huge datamining operation to continue identifying suckers. Because of the K-Pop uprising, the data they collected was junk. That’s a far larger victory than the empty arena.
(Because let’s face it. The empty arnea was a nice optic, but the reality is: trump still has plenty of supporters, and is still likely to win in November).
“Like”
Although I have to say if trump wins it is due to the VERY active voter suppression war this bunch is waging on the US, aided by interference from foreign powers who wish to see the IS in disarray.
Side note – interviews of Tulsa attendees showed that for a large percentage, this was not their first. Indicating that perhaps his “rabid” supporters are not that many. They are just like some hateful “Dead Heads” following their favorite act around the country.
Our internet is down. I actually have work to do today and I can’t do any of it

Sure, we do romanticize Victorian England in books and films full of white leading characters and we should do better.

This is a big change.
I think what Wizards is trying to achieve is laudable, but I wonder if this change will be received as anything beyond a corporate overture to be politically correct.
I do applaud the move, but TBH: I’m also wrestling a bit with it. There still need to be automatic bad creatures, right? And sometimes humanoid?
Or are, say, harpies, not always hostile encounters now?
Either way, it gives DMs a bunch of storytelling possibilities.

Had a good day yesterday.
The young‘ns joined me for gaming and then we grilled super!
Played “7 Wonders”. Fun game once you figure it all out. Our first game took about 1.5 hours as we stumbled through it.
We took a break then played again. This time it proved to be a fast action game. Took maybe 20 minutes!
Still not sure we got the scoring correct though.
That was on our radar during our tabletop phase. Maybe we’ll get around to it for our next tabletop phase.

Forget about music genres – – this is a brilliant cover of an already-perfect song.
“Mezzanine” was a straight-up masterpiece, regardless of genre.
It now seems you can add the authors Myke Cole and Sam Sykes to your douchebag list.
??
For using “y” instead of “i” in their names.
Do a search for their names on twitter and all will be revealed.
Twitter? I wouldn’t go there, even while wearing a mask.
I’m seeing some grumbling about them both on FB, but no real details. I know nothing of Myke Cole (I know the name – – that’s about it), but I’ve hung out with Sam Sykes at Cons. Other than one group dinner, though, it was mostly around panels, so I never witnessed any shitty behavior.
I’ll get more details before commenting further. Disappointing, though.

Crap joke for the day:
A soldier ran up to a nun. Out of breath he asked, “Please, may I hide under your skirt. I’ll explain later.” The nun agreed… A moment later two Military Police ran up and asked, “Sister, have you seen a soldier?” The nun replied, “He went that way.” After the MPs ran off, the soldier crawled out from under her skirt and said, “I can’t thank you enough, sister. You see, I don’t want to go to Syria.” The nun said, “I understand completely.” The soldier added, “I hope I’m not rude, but you have a great pair of legs!” The nun replied, “If you had looked a little higher, you would have seen a great pair of balls…. I don’t want to go to Syria either.”
Pretty good crap joke!

Here is what is *really* happening in the healthcare systems of Arizona right now:
From a fellow RN, who compiled the data from other nurses’ posts on a few different FB groups. Real time updates:
As of June 23rd or 22nd.
Below are real responses from actual hospital employees, i.e. frontline RNs, RTs, and physicians. If you want a really accurate picture of what Arizona is looking like then here it is:
Banner Desert: (My former home)
3 COVID telemetry units full (❤️ patients)
1 medsurg (regular floor) COVID unit full
2/3 ICU dedicated to COVID only, 3 patients to 1 RN ratio (normally 2:1)
Expanded regular ER into pediatric ER
Using some peds floors for adults
Code purple (hospital full or approaching full and not enough staff to cover upcoming shifts)
Interventional radiology (vascular procedures) filling separate, additional ICU
Banner Boswell:
Converting several regular units to COVID. Stopped elective surgeries
Banner Baywood:
ICU 3:1 ratio. Code purple
Banner Estrella:
Doubling up patients in rooms
6 COVID units
Banner Cardons Children’s Hospital:
3 of 5 floors dedicated to adults
ER has lots of hallway beds (patients don’t get a real room)
Banner University Phoenix:
2 of 3 ICUs dedicated to COVID.
Progressive Care Unit (PCU) dedicated to COVID patients with a second one coming soon.
2 COVID medsurg floors
Valleywise Hospital:
2 COVID ICUs, 4 COVID medsurg units
Code lavender (same as code purple)
Asked for 26 travel RNs, only received 6
St. Joe’s:
4 COVID ICUs. Now placing double beds in rooms. 64 beds currently occupied
Stopped elective surgeries today.
Difficulty accommodating traumas, strokes, brain aneurysms due to shortage of ICU beds.
Pulmonologist Intensivist (critical care lung doctor) working 7 days a week.
Dignity Chandler:
27 vented COVID – will double patients in rooms once they get to 32, max 64
3 medsurg floors COVID
Mercy Gilbert:
2 ICUs COVID full
2 medsurg floors COVID full
Honor Health Shea:
30 medsurg COVID beds full
One ICU unit full, took 5 beds from the “clean” (non-COVID) ICU.
Honor Health Osborn:
40 COVID medsurg beds full
3/4 ICUs dedicated to COVID and overflowing into ER & PACU (post anesthesia care unit)
10 rooms available for COVID patients but no one to staff them
Honorhealth Deer Valley:
PCCU (30 beds) all COVID
Now floor 4S (24 beds) COVID
They are clearing out floor 4N (27 beds)to make it COVID also.
Mountain Vista in Mesa.
Almost max capacity
24 COVID rule out’s on the floor and 12 Covid rule out’s in ICU.
Only 4 beds open across all units today.
ER is holding COVID r/out’s (until they can find a bed) if need be.
Helicopter pilot from Yuma medical center flying patients to Phx because Yuma is full
Tucson Medical Center called me at 9pm saying they are in desperate need of ICU NPs and will require an 8-12 week contract. (I’m not trained in critical care).
*Lots of stories of Arizona healthcare workers breaking down crying at work, calling out sick therefore being very short staffed for the next shift, and actually getting sick with COVID. EVERYONE is working overtime. Healthcare workers are getting slammed. My heart goes out to all of them
So….
This looks bad but not knowing what the various codes mean or how many hospitals AZ has … it’s hard for the average Joe to know HOW bad it is.
For instance, in my state I read that our ICU beds are now 82% full and the daily number of hospitalizations is steadily increasing. Not in crises now but heading there and doing nothing on the State level to stop or slow it.
Can you put that kind of summary on the AZ situation ?

Ebert, again, called it a “barf-bag movie”, “a geek show, a gross-out movie in which teenagers can dare one another to watch the screen.”
Never forget that Ebert gave TPM 3 1/2 stars. “”Star Wars: Episode I–The Phantom Menace,” to cite its full title, is an astonishing achievement in imaginative filmmaking.”
Finally getting mobility back.
Friday a week ago, I shoveled 4, wheel burrow loads of multch and spread them around a flower bed.
By the next night I could barely change position from sitting to standing up(or viceversa). Two days later back was better but the tight muscle had now strained my leg muscle and walking was painful.
Today I think I am finally gaining ground.
Was “gaining ground” a pun, after moving all of that dirt?

One of the best shows on TV period.
The company behind Cards Against Humanity does not compute looking good after this firing:
https://t.co/5FVOztZNCL
There’s been a lot of talk recently about wrongs committed internally at CAH by the higher ups in the company.
https://www.businessinsider.com/cards-against-humanity-ceo-max-temkin-resigns-racism-sexism-allegations-2020-6
The point of the game is to offend. Every single one of us has played the game and laughed our asses off. I don’t have a suggestion for modifying the game to protect people who might be hurt or offended by it – – because the hurt in those cards goes way beyond just minorities and ethnic jokes (I don’t mean jokes against privileged white people, btw).
Maybe strongly-worded messages in it telling hate groups who take the jokes as literal hate messages to fuck right off. shrug
The conduct reports from inside the company are numerous and credible and disgusting. That’s unacceptable. They won’t get another dollar from me until they take out their trash.
I don’t think that modifying the game fixes the problem… which is that it’s humor is based around the fact that “we” all know how very wrong it is.
Do you stop mocking the horrible people because they don’t get that you are mocking them?
The title clearly states that the cards are AGAINST humanity.
