  1. Let’s see. I have 2,600 points. The flight is 3,600 points. The difference would cost me $300.00 plus taxes. The flight itself is $500 including taxes. Not using points for that.

Will see what hotel Jack & Pixie recommends and see if points can be used there.

  2. Vitamix concoction of the day:
    Kale
    Spinach
    Carrot
    Banana
    Apple
    Orange Juice
    Sprite
    Honey
    Cap’n Crunch

I can’t really give ingredient sizes, I just threw it all together and hit blend. Expected it to be awful, but it’s kinda grown on me.

Although it is kind of a Swamp Thing green…

  3. Crap joke for the day:

An old lady is rocking away the last of her days on her front porch, reflecting on her long life, when–all of a sudden–a fairy godmother appears in front of her and informs her that she will be granted three wishes….”Well, now,” says the old lady, “I guess I would like to be really rich.”

** POOF *** her rocking chair turns to solid gold.
“And, gee, I guess I wouldn’t mind being a young, beautiful
    princess.”
*** POOF *** she turns into a beautiful young woman.
“Your third wish?” asked the fairy godmother.
Just then the old woman’s cat wanders across the porch in front of
    them.
“Ooh–can you change him into a handsome prince?” she asks.
*** POOF *** there before her stands a young man more handsome than
    anyone could possibly imagine.
She stares at him, smitten. With a smile that makes her knees weak,
he saunters across the porch in his catlike way and whispers in her
ear, “Bet you’re sorry you had me neutered, aren’t you?”

  4. So.
Apparently, there was a rumored threat against the school, allegedly made by some kid. The school sent out an email saying the threat wasn’t credible, and that there’d be an increased police presence.

And so, of course, the fear-mongering and hysteria followed. Not just from students, but also from parents, who kept their kids home in large numbers.

I’m super proud of my daughter for being bigger than that and going to school as if it were any other day, and choosing not to live every moment ruled by fear. She knocks me out every day.

    • All to shittily common. 2 weeks ago there was a bomb threat specifically against all Arvada schools (where my daughter goes to HS). She went to school and texted back that there was maybe 15% of kids that showed up. My son, who also goes to Arvada schools, said that his elementary was pretty well full. I didn’t see any mass hysteria or fear mongering overall here…but I’m pretty sure the High Schoolers used it as an excuse to not go to school. Ultimately it was deemed a hoax.

Good on your daughter for going.

  5. Crap joke for the day:

    What do you call it
when GOd kicks all the major angels out of heaven for sending holy memos in arial instead of times new roman?

      Prairie graveyard
      Reckless tumbleweed
      hurries across forgotten graves
of those who toiled through despair

      Longing
How I long for the tumbleweed, rich prairie soil,
green stains on my jeans from the long, juicy grass,
the songs of the frogs, my father’s deep voice,
my mother’s goulash, my innocent youth
      and a rain water bath.

How I long for my childhood, my magical past.

my mind drifts…a tumbleweed in the wind
      blowing across open desert
      bouncing over past thoughts
      briefly lingering in prickly places
      unsettled dreams with thorny consequence
aimless is the trail it wonders
spiny twigs left as memories fail
a trail of broken remembrances in hot sand

      Wild, Wild West
      Magazine ads and newspaper obituaries
      skitter across the streets
      like tumbleweed in the desert.
Rims the size of carriage wheels roll by.
      Everyone’s holsters are filled,
      even the children carry pistols.
      The schools are ghost towns
      but the saloons stay occupied.

      Tumblweed
Always depended on the wind to carry me where i needed to go,
never expected one day that it would not blow,
      a tumbleweed without a home
needs a breeze to help move it along
‘coz if it sits still to long,
a fire is ignited by the scorching sun,
and where there once was one,
      now there is none

      contemplation
      it’s wrong
      to want to kill
      your muse?

      drown it
      like an unwanted
      puppy
      bury it deep, somewhere
      in the desert
      where essences rot, decomposing
the way they left your soul

      dry
      arid dusting with the tumbleweed
wherever the wind decides to move you

then SMACK, stuck on the grill of a semi

      Sundae Spice
      Do you remember
      the first time we met?
I do: it was on a warm
      sundae afternoon.

      There were gales
      of mischief and glee
      all around, each cradling
      a clear plastic bag,

      with a treat of tumbleweed
      trying to escape the rim:
      banana, toffee or
      vanilla flavoured

      cotton candy; or
      were they woolly fibres –
      similar to the strands that
      intermingle in your felted hair?

      Murmur of A Tumbleweed
As you read this, I have gone.
After all, I belong somewhere in nowhere.

When you are by the sea, or on a mountain site,
Think of me, even just for a brief moment.
Then, my soul will be set free.

      Don’t be sad.
When fairytale comes true, you will see me again.
Through a cloud floating in the sky, or in a leaf whistling by …..

I am leaving now; it is time to say goodbye.

      TUMBLEWEED
      I’m just a tumbleweed
      Rolling in the dust
      Nobody notices me
      But I just must
      bounce
      bounce
      bounce
      On the ground

      Dancing, rolling
      I’m stuck by a tree
      The wind moves me on
      I keep rolling free!

      Tumbling, Tumbling
      All through the day
      Just a lonely little tumbleweed
      With nothing to say

But stay out of my way!

  6. Today’s movie is The Devil’s Candy

This beautiful home is the perfect spot to raise a family. Or, if that’s not your thing, become possessed by the devil.

It’s always good to have choices, I guess

  7. On a related note, in Ontario (I think) someone took the previous owner of a house to court, and won, because they didn’t say on the listing the house was haunted. True story

  8. Oh good, more night scenes

I suppose, if my living room wasn’t brightly lit from sunshine, the dark scenes might be a little easier to see

  9. Second hand pot smoke

That’s actually a concern for us comes summer. Being in a condo, we’re hoping the neighbours on either side of us won’t partake

  10. I hope you guys got to witness the segment of the Olympic Closing ceremonies that featured the 13 year old shredding to Vivaldi’s “4 seasons”. I’ve tried to find a link but all I can locate is short clips.
You need to see the whole thing. It starts with some sort of circle of traditional instruments and then he takes off and then another group joins and it just becomes epic … like Zeplin’s “Kashmir” or something.
The ceremony was already shaping up to be some sort of TRON meets K-pop thing and I was totally NOT expecting this.

    Try to find it.

  11. I’m totally talking the talk, but not walking the walk, for spending less time on the phone. When I’m not looking at a loved one, I’m killing time on some small screen.

I’ll get my eyes and brain back in gear this week.

  12. A man walked into a bar and ordered a drink. While he ordered, he noticed a short man (about a foot tall) playing a piano. Confused, the man asked the bartender what was up with it.

The bartender said, “behind the bar there’s a genie that comes out when you knock over the trashcan. He’ll grant you one wish, but-”

Before the bartender could finish, the man went out into the back and knocked over the trashcans. The genie appeared and the man made a wish.

    “I wish I had a million bucks!”

On command the genie granted his wish and a million ducks appeared. Dumbfounded, the man marched back into the bar to confront the bartender.

“What the hell, man? I asked the genie for a million bucks and he gave me a million ducks instead!”

The bartender retorted, “you ran off before I finished telling you that the genie is hard of hearing. Did you really think I wanted a twelve inch pianist?”

  13. At what point in the future will people hear the phrase “what is love” they won’t think to themselves, “baby don’t hurt me, no more”?

  14. A lady called her gynecologist, and asked for an “emergency” appointment. The receptionist said to come right in. She rushed to the office, and was ushered right into an examination room. The doctor came into the exam room and asked about her problem.

She was very shy about her emergency problem, and asked the gynecologist to please examine her vagina.

So the doctor started to examine her. He stuck up his head after completing his examination. “I’m sorry, Miss,” he said, “but removing that vibrator is going to involve a very lengthy , delicate and expensive surgical operation.”

“I’m not sure I can afford it,” sighed the young woman. “But while I am here could you just replace the batteries? “

  15. Morning Pan

Only got a little bit of snow over night. However, the weatherman says we’re not out of the woods yet. Lots more to come

  16. I’m just gonna say it. Episodes 2-7 of this season of the X-Files have not only erased the terrible taste of the season premier, it is becoming one of the better seasons period. Job well done.

If you haven’t seen ep 7 yet, do so most immediately. You need not have ever seen an episode before to enjoy it

  17. October by China Meiville

The long Russian names slipped through my ears, but an interesting acount of the Russian revolution.

Finally, because it was going cheap on Audible, I’ve started ‘reading’ Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson.

My initial thoughts after the first two chapters is he info dumps far too bloody much. FFS, no wonder the audio book is 17 hours long..

  18. I see lots of cool stuff during my many hours at the ice rink, famous hockey players and figure skaters, amazing skating displays, amateur hockey at all levels – – but today there was a sled hockey tournament, which was amazing to see.

If you don’t know, sled hockey is played on ice by athletes with limited or no use of their legs.

  19. Netflix finally put on the first two seasons of Ash VS Evil Dead and fuck me if I haven’t flown thru them. Dana Delorenzo is freaking fantastic. Bruce Campbell and Lucy Lawless are goddamn National Treasures. What a gross funny wonderful witty well-written show. The shit (no pun intended) they can pull off on the show is fantastic. Nearly every show I say to myself “they are not going to actually show that are they?” And lo and behold there it is in all its practical effect gory Glory. This is a show that I want to spend time with. That I want to immerse myself with the characters and the surroundings. If you have the stomach for it go do it. It is one of the greatest rides out there. Have I mentioned Dana Delorenzo?

  20. ditto, I read All Systems Red last year and loved it.

What I didn’t love was Tor jacking the price of the sequels (ebook price that is) by about 300%

So won’t be buying them straight away, when they get released.

  21. I was able to sneak out with my sister and catch Red Sparrow at the theater.

We both enjoyed it. Less sex. More psychological espionage.

Not sure why we were the only people under the age of 60 seeing this movie, though.

  22. Crap joke for the day:

I went into the doctor’s office the other day with a steering wheel stuck to my testicles.

I said, “Doctor, can you do something about this? It’s driving me nuts!”

  23. Lay down fall away
    Lie awake
    Just cannot move
    My arms and legs
    I’m paralyzed
    Don’t recall how to free
    Myself from this
In the heart of the dark
    My face contorted
Don’t know how to reach the light
    But I feel so bad
Like a freak in a cage

  24. Oh… oh god I need a bag…..bluuurp

    • YEAH HOW??????

Be “warned”… after volume 3 they completely (well sorta completely….)reboot the series due to real problems with the artists. Its still well worth reading, but don’t expect a long run.

        • RIght. This one really could have but the seminal artist of the series was fired after the first volume do to alleged domestic violence. It never recovered art-wise after that. Too many cooks….

  25. Back to damn work today. Getting in the damn shower and diving into my damn commute now. Then hopefully getting damn coffee to keep my damn eyes open at my damn desk and in all those damn meetings.

  26. In happier stuff: I saw the “Celebrating David Bowie” show tonight. The tix had been a bday gift from my lovely Mrs.

Mostly members of his old band, with some guest vocalists. The most surprising was Joe Sumner – – that’s Sting Jr. He was great. And the songs sounded amazing. Thanks, honey!

  27. Stupid Prime video has stopped working on our tv. I’m assuming they’ve updated the app since the icon looks different. Now they need to update it again to fix it.
Now we have to watch the rest of The Tick on my ipad.
(which we hook up to the tv so not a real issue)

*Yes, I know this is a fwp, live with it.

    • I didn’t really know who she was, but something seemed vaguely familiar. Then I discovered she played the part of Alice in the episode “Autofac” of Amazon’s “Phillip K Dick’s Electric Dreams.” Seems like appropriate casting.

  28. I never knew that a baby could have such polar opposite smells eminating for her tiny little human body.

Up top, it is sweet baby fresh softness.

    The other end, blech.

    • I believe that is absolute evil that comes out of the innocent.
As we get older, we begin to lose the ability to rid it from ourselves as easily as we did as infants. Those adults who develop a clinical inability to rid themselves of this evil become Corporate Executives or politicians.

    • It is an interesting point. I wonder if The Pure Good Guy vs the Pure Evil Guy is rooted in Judeo Christian stories – – where the Holy Trinity and famous icons are flawlessly good, and Satan and all of his allies are irredeemably bad. Maybe?

      • I think it isn’t as simple as that otherwise the myth would have been established much earlier in Western culture. But it definitely plays a part.

        • Yeah, I don’t claim there’s 1 simple root cause to point to, but I do wonder how much the Mono God of pure good with his antagonist Devil if pure evil is a factor.

Interesting sidebar to this – – if you call out the greatest movies and stories of all time, then the protagonists are usually shades of good and bad – – or pretty awful, but we still cheer for them – – the George Baileys, Peter Parkers, and Voldemorts are the exceptions, not the norm.
          E.g.:

Pulp Fiction, The Godfather, Citizen Kane, Psycho, Batman (not Adam West), Silence of the Lambs, Taxi Driver…. Even Luke and Frodo caved a little into their evil temptations.

      • Got to be pre-Christianity. Every “leader” who has ever needed people to do things they would have never otherwise have even considered has relied on the “Us = good, them = all bad(or at least anti-good)” narrative to motive otherwise peaceful agrarian folks to go and kill and maim.

        • That’s simple tribalism. Us vs Them. It’s hard wired in us and it’s not going away. That isn’t the same as the good guy/bad guy dichotomy discussed in the article.

          • I’m not sure I agree. I can see her point that folklore does not rely on the Good guy / bad guy trope but it is pretty well documented that this trope has been used in real life to dehumanize the “other” in nationalistic conflicts.
As for the entertainment media, we’ve had that trope since the first radio plays hit the airwaves.
When movie cameras came along, it wasn’t a minute before some guy in a black outfit, twirling a handlebar moustache, tied Purdee Pureheart to the train tracks for no other reason than … he was a bad guy.

… or maybe I’ve missed the point all together?

  29. Gut punch, just like I expected, at the end of “Life Is Strange – Before The Storm: Farewell”. Great conclusion to the series.
CP: Black Flies — Ben Howard

  30. Interesting timing with out discussion on stories of good vs. evil.
Last night I watched Studio Ghibli’s “Princess Mononoke” in which the over-arching conflict between Gods/Spirits and humans had no clear cut “good guys”.
Both sides did horrendous things but the motivation for these acts was (they felt) to protect their group.
There was human on human conflict that may have had more shades of “white hat/black hat” but it still wasn’t clear cut.

The real world is so full of shades of grey … maybe we want our entertainment to be easy?

I enjoyed the film, by the way.

    • R.E.M. have a couple of embarrassingly awful songs, but their excellent-to-great songs far outweigh those. Overall, they’re completely legit. No snark from me.

      • Agreed. This is actually a lot of fun and helps that their first few albums are quite short… and very very good. I’ve listened from Chronic Town through Fables of the Reconstruction so far and it’s been wonderful.

    • “You want your hero to appear on one of your songs. The natural thing to do is to send them a recording and then wait. Your preferred response would be an email a couple of hours later with a vocal already recorded and attached. Failing that, you’d settle for a note saying: “Schedule’s busy, but let’s try to find some studio time.” You could probably understand silence – after all, heroes are busy people. What you might want least of all would be for said hero to respond: “It’s not a very good song, is it?” Which of those do you think happened when Coldplay approached Bowie?”

      AHHHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!HAHAHAHAH!!!!!

  31. So someone on twitter asked what would trump say to the UK accusation that Russia tried to poison a old traitor.

“Why didn’t the idiots use drones like we do?”

Was the reply I didn’t send.

  32. We had record amounts of snow this winter. It’s now starting to melt, brining with it lots of road flooding. There are currently workers outside with a metal detector trying to find the storm drain so they can unclog it and, hopefully drain some of the giant puddle on the road in front of our home

  33. There are way more people at Sky Harbor airport at 12:30am, than I ever expected there to be. On the plus side, they all seem like your average, happy-go-lucky people too. Winning.

    • He’s either being quoted badly, or he’s not making any sense. I don’t get the point he’s trying to make. If there were actresses who willingly used Weinstein to get roles (and I’m sure there were), then how does that invalidate any of the stories of his victims??

      • It doesn’t. It’s doesn’t at all. In fact no where here does he mention anyone being forced against their will. This is really really gross.

He’s stating that there were two kinds of women. Those who willingly used Harvey Weinstein to get a career and GOT a career out of it and those that used him to get a career and did NOT get a career out of it. He’s being super gross and intimating that it’s only those that did NOT get a career that are crying the victim.

        • No horror story but I found this passage interesting.
” all the land surface of Trent or 75 million square miles in extent was a single City. The population at its height was well in excess of 40 billions. This enormous population was devoted almost entirely to the administrative necessities of the Galactic Empire and found themselves all too few for the complications of the task.”
Hmmm….me wonder if Lucas was a fan

    • I’ve read some Isaac, but a few of my friends had warned me away from Foundations during my young days, saying it was dull and slow as paint drying.

And unfortunately, along the same lines as the previous topic, there’s a pretty shitty story about him being a creepy lech at Sci-Fi Cons in the past.

    • In the last decade, I can confidently say no. Would have certainly been early 90’s when I read the original trilogy. I have just a few vague memories of concepts. Never read any of the other books that he wrote about the Foundation.

    • Oh right. Different country.
Yeah, the serial killer in Toronto is an ongoing news story here in Canada. They are still finding body pieces he stored in gardens where he worked. Last I heard, they are waiting for spring thaw to dig up even more gardens.

  34. Alright, I guess I’m just getting senile – I thought we had an email chain or Facebook event going for this year’s meetup, but I can’t track it down. Figure it’s time I start looking at flights and such and figure out what everyone else is doing.

Give an geezer a pointer, will ya?

  35. Maybe the best comment to anything ever. Pertaining to UMBC being the first 16 seed in history to knock off a 1 seed (Virginia) in the basketballs tourney…..

“Thomas Jefferson must be rolling over in his slave.”

    I literally choked

  36. At some point, it became unhip to like Nirvana, but their MTV Unplugged album is still something pretty magical. Cobain’s performance at that show is sloppy and screechy and just amazing.

  37. There’s apparently something called the Maple Edit for the Hobbit filmseseseses, which manages to boil those 3 bloated bags down into 1 2-hour film, which is somewhat faithful to the book. This, I might want to see.

No link, because I’m not sure if I want to investigate on work computers.

  38. Your crap joke of the day:

One day a traffic cop pulls Heisenberg over.

Cop: “Do you know how fast you were going?”

Heisenberg: “No, but I know where I am.”

  39. Stupid news. Said there was an accident on the highway I use to get into town and I should allow an extra half hour driving time. Now I’m at the doctors 20 minutes earlier than normal. It’s a good thing I have a book on my phone

  40. CW: Here and Now E06

I don’t care if it Tim Robbins is acting in it, if it turns there is not a supernatural explanation for all the mind fuckery i’m Going to be pissed.

  41. Hello Denver area Panites.
I will be in the area next week and looking for things to do with the fam.
Sadly, it looks like the weather will suck for wandering about in the great outdoors … so any tips on concerts, exhibits, theater and or other indoor frivolity would be appreciated.

  42. Hubby and I have a strange problem. We have friends coming over tonight for gaming. One of them is colour blind. Most of our newest games (which are the ones they will want to play) have either coloured dice, cards, or tokens. The discussion yesterday was about which (new) game we could pull out that he could play

      • NEWer games. We’ve played most of those mentioned with this couple. Most of our friends like to try the newest additions. We’ll probably start with Splendor. While the gems are different colours most of them are also different shapes. I think there are only two that are the same shape. Then, maybe, Clank Under Water. Hubby will check with them when they come over to see if Randy can handle the few coloured items.

  43. So ordered a new laptop, not a gaming one, as I rarely play PC games these days.

But HP have two identical models that the only difference is one has a plastic lid and the other metal.

That 150 quid difference for a metal lid WTF!

  44. 1st morning in the Holiday In Express.
Breakfast. Including fakon (their stunt double for bacon) and the western homagelette, a shout-out to the well known egg-based food item.
    Coffee saves the day though.

  45. Professor Marston and the Wonder Women if lovely and fascinating. Just to understand the genesis of the ideas a little better is worth it.

And I’m beginning to understand that Luke Evans has to either be naked or act in a sexual scene in just about every production he’s involved in now 😉

      • Not a documentary. Based on their life story (stories). All of them risked a lot to live the lives they wanted. Well acted and beautifully shot.

          • No it wasn’t hidden. They all had to hide the relationship to some extent. Did she deny it at first? Yes. There was also a scene where she caused a fight in exasperation of trying to fight society. But in no way do I feel she denied it. Hell, not to spoiler it, but the two women lived together until one of them died.

    • Friday or yesterday? Friday we played under sea clank followed by Hero Realms. I won both. Yesterday we played two rounds of Under Sea Clank followed by Martian Dice. I won one round of Clank. Hubby however, didn’t win any of the games.

We now have a two week break before our next round of gaming

  46. This cold is still hanging around. I tried the pharmacy Minute Clinic today, rather than shcedule a doc appt. It was actually pretty damn easy. This might be a better alternative to the primary care doc.

  47. So, I finally read the first two volumes of “Darth Vader” plus “Darth Vader Down”. It was really good. I see why Lo praised it so much. The only complaint I have is Darth seems too over-powered, but that’s a very minor complaint.

    • It’s kinda downhill after the Vader Down storyline, but everything before is amazing. Aphra is a pretty cool new character too.

There’s a new Vader series, focusing the days immediately following Revenge of the Sith. Good so far, but not the same level as the series you’re talking about.

    • A very out of the closet gay man savaging Trump? Cmon, what’s the WORST I could see in the comments?

      #nopenotreadingthem

    • I wasn’t sure if I wanted to watch The Terror or not. Then AMC did something with the way they communicate with my DVR so that when I recorded The Walking Dead it looked like a 2 hour episode, but also “included” The Terror. Those kinds of shenanigans and trying to force content down my throat have exactly the opposite of intended reaction. Fuck AMC. I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered!

    • I will say that I don’t think it’s a bad thing to enjoy the book – – and probably the movie – – as a fun, pandering reworking of old references. I enjoyed the ride, but had zero interest in checking out Cline’s next book. Especially after it so many people said it was awful.

I get that there are horrible things being said and done in real world gamer culture, but I didn’t get those messages when I read RP1. *shrug thing that people do on the internet*

      • I don’t buy the GamerGate argument. I found some of the arguments a huge stretch of interpretation. It is entirely guilt by association. *shrug*

As for Armada, Cline fell victim to his own success. I liked the last 1/3 of the book once he got out of his own way and told the damn story. I expect his experience with Spielberg will actually improve his writing. If not, then I probably won’t read anymore of his stuff.

        • I haven’t read “Ready Player One”, so I’m not quite keyed into the hype about it. From the trailer it looks like a fun movie, but I’ll probably rent it. That said, is Gamergate still a thing? Basically the internet discovered that there were a vocal group of misogynistic trolls out there and some of them happened to play games. There are a vocal group of racists on YouTube as well, does that mean that online videos are intrinsically racists?
The “because Gamergate” narrative leads to unfortunate statements like this:
“Wade should care that his best friend is a black lesbian because those are important facts about his best friend’s life. But in this world, they’re unimportant, because only things that affect straight white dudes really matter.”
Not having read the book I can’t speak specifically about what the author was trying to convey, but my first impression is that in a world of avatars, social identity goes out the window and people connect as individuals and perhaps in a manner they wouldn’t in the real world because of prejudice.

  48. Ok
Went and saw “Ready Player One” tonight.
Much better than I was expecting.

Went with 2 young, very feminist girls (one high school and one college age), a college age guy and two of us old foggies and every one gave it two thumbs up.
Not a master piece or classic or world changer … just a lot of fun!
    Nothing wrong with that.

  49. There are few tv series I look forward to, but bloody hell I was looking forward to the final series of ‘The Americans’ and the first episode did not disappoint.

Maybe my memory is gnackered or I don’t Like Phill Collins, but the music was a bit intrusive at times.
