1. You did a great job, Van. Seriously. You did a great job, Van. Seriously. You did a great job, Van. Seriously. You did a great job, Van. Seriously. You did a great job, Van. Seriously. You did a great job, Van. Seriously. You did a great job, Van. Seriously. You did a great job, Van. Seriously. You did a great job, Van. Seriously. You did a great job, Van. Seriously. You did a great job, Van. Seriously. You did a great job, Van. Seriously.

No, seriously. You both did.
Goodnight :uptoolate:

2. lol, right Jack, I’ll shall shutup moaning now…

Morning Pan, True Grit doesn’t open till this weekend here, so today I shall be checking out ‘The Fighter’.

3. I would like to clarify my remarks. I would never have watched this movie 3 times if I didn’t like it. I love the zither music, Wells’ role, and the ending. Being a drama, I was just frustrated because I didn’t have that much to say about it. I just don’t rewatch drammas that often. Even Citizen Kane, which I loved, I have only seen twice.

4. My own joking aside, Jack, I agree with you about the film. I enjoyed it.

Didn’t miss the gays — VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENKIL!! Well, Sly B didn’t miss the gays.

I studied Film Noir as an undergrad, and didn’t see this film in that course. Other FN that you all may enjoy: Double Indemnity, which is excellent and the best FN IMO: BOUND.

5. Jack, Jack, Jack! You missed a Third Man something from me! Don’t you love me any more?

I think I’m going to sit in a corner now and cry :cwy:

6. I will say that changing terms in Twain’s work is a complex issue. I don’t think it should be done, but I also want to note that not only people of color find the terminology in question offensive. I don’t think that people of color are the ones pushing for that change. I think a lot of “liberal” white guilt is behind it. Dumb . . .

7. Bunny had a great something for the 3rd Man. I just forgots it, like a dummy. 🙁

It really needs to be heard, so – there’s still time for your thoughts Nomad, if you want to share.

8. Lo Pan said:
Amy there’s nothing to catch the second time around.

No, there isn’t, not like in some more complex movies. I only watched it again because I was overdoing it on the multitasking the first time around and missed some important dialog. *shameface*

9. Do be so gloomy. After all it’s kinda that awful. Like the fella says, in Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Deadpan they had anti-podtaint – they had 5 years of stolen rap lyrics and awesome interviews, and what did that produce? The Third Manapalooza. So long Mush.

10. One thing I liked in the movie that I didn’t mention was the German not really being translated. There was a lot of it and it was a little confusing, but then we were kind of in Holly’s perspective, so the director was putting us in Holly’s shoes. I liked that.

11. Crap joke alert:

MORNING SEX……

She was standing in the kitchen, preparing our usual soft-boiled eggs and toast for breakfast, wearing only the T shirt that she normally slept in.

As I walked in, almost awake, she turned to me and said softly, ”you’ve got to make love to me this very moment!”….

My eyes lit up and I thought, ”I am either still dreaming or this is going to be my lucky day!”

Not wanting to lose the moment, I embraced her and then gave it my all, right there on the kitchen table.

Afterwards she said, ” thanks”, and returned to the stove, her t shirt still round her neck.

Happy, but a little puzzled, I asked,
”what was all that about?”

She explained, ………….

” The egg timer’s broken.”……..

12. Dammit, I’d also intended to say that. I do love that there’d be a full scene with no words in English, no subtitles, yet you fully grasped everything. This from Oden again on that point, since we’re viewing this world from Holly’s in-over-his-head POV, we should be unsure of the characters words.

i also disagree with the comments that there’s nothing else to catch in subsequent viewings, but I *did* say that in the ep :). Everyone’s words and actions have lots of meanings and contradictions, even including the lovable sergeant.

13. I too liked the untranslated German but the whole “trying to solve a mystery in an alien landscape” thing seemed like maybe an idea that the original writers had as a key plot point … but it got really down played in future re-writes. If they har REALLY played up that angle, really laid into it and given us a rising sense of frustration and even disorientation … it would have taken this film up a couple of notches. Instead, it felt like more of just a little side idea.

but what do I know.

14. BTW – the whole, giving a sense of disorientation and “wrongness” is one of the main reasons to use the “dutch angles” in your camera work. They just need to be used more purposefully then they were here. Here they seemed like someone occasionally leaned over to the camerman and said “Hey, throw one of them dutch angle shots in here. I hear they’re real arty.”

15. … and since I seem to be in curmudgeon mode …

I question that what I am hearing in that youtube clip is what the young lad is playing. He appears to be sitting in a room with no pick-up and yet I hear no room ambience and what seems to be a little bit of reverb or echo.
Perhaps some of our more guitar savey Deadpanites might give it closer perusal and tell me if in fact you could get that clean a sound with just the mic on a camcorder.

What do I know. I’m still scanning and scanning and scanning … all with out the aid of beer. It may be making me surly.

16. Just finished listening to the episode, thanks again Jack for editing the conversation between me and TEB (and cutting out the mention of my actual age..).

17. Well while I still hold to my opinions about this movie (though admittedly the comparison with UHF was hyperbole), I appreciate the vigorous defenses given and respect the views presented. I think everyone made some great contributions on this one.

18. “I suspect that Bob is secretly stashing squares of toilet paper from the rest rooms and bringing them home to build an enormous papier mache model of Devil’s Mountain in his living room. This employee may need to be watched closely.”

19. Essbee – you can use this for a “good” employee.

(insert name) is really motivated and shows great initiative in implementing new strategic planning and group dynamics. On more then one occasion (Insert Name) has shown great restraint in not bludgeoning upper management personnel who quite clearly needed “a good killing”.
While I have no complaints with (insert name), he/she could use some improvement in the area of mind reading if they wish to become a more “value added” drone for Evil Inc.

20. Old joke: Two cannibals are eating a stew made from a clown. The first cannibal leans over and asks the second “Does this taste funny to you?”

21. I’m probably going to add around 10 more that I know I’ve tried, all from local breweries and are sold in liquor stores, I could add another 10 that are keg only.

22. Yeah, that’s one of the reasons I’m not submitting several beers. It’s been so long since I tried them there is no way I can really remember what I thought. Or my palate has changed so much I’d have a completely different opinion now.

23. Nokia has decided that being the biggest cell phone company in the world kinda sucks. In order to remedy that, they are shacking up with Windows Mobile. Instead of Android. Or, ya know, working on Symbian some more.

I wonder how much of the decision was because the CEO used to be with Microsoft Office. Or maybe it has more to do with his five kids?

24. Oooh, goody. Somebody went and blew their plant up this week – dunno if it made the national news.

This weekend I get to work on rebuilding it. Burn jobs are never fun.

25. Ess: Sorry to hear about your knee. Hope it’s better soon.
Ed: Sorry to hear about the sucky job. Hope it’s better soon.
NS: Sorry to hear about your sucky mobile carrier choice. Hope it’s better soon.
JfromS: Sorry to hear about your bad joke. Hope it’s better soon.
Lo: Sorry to hear about your beer site overload. Hope it’s better soon.
Lost Ralph: Sorry…
… never mind.

26. Tomorrow we go on a search for a new piece of work out equipment. We have a stationary bike but I don’t like the seat. It makes me numb in places I shouldn’t be.

Hubby wants to get an elliptical but I’m not so sure we have the space.

27. I’m ashamed to admit that I just thought of a possible upside to the Transformers 3 movie. Updated versions of the dinobots…

Not that I’ll go see it in theaters, but still I would consider that a positive outcome among the huge pile of shit the movie will probably be.

28. Van: You can’t blame the script on me, let’s face it the movie is already finished by now.

WNDR: Doh! I’d managed to block that from my memory, I’m just going to slink away now.

29. “Van: You can’t blame the script on me, let’s face it the movie is already finished by now.”

Now now people, I am SURE that the “Scriptbot 3000” has cranked out the finest quality screenplay possible … given that all the parameters it was given, involved the name “Transformers”, “Robots” and “maximizing profit margins amongst the largest movie going demographic (13 to 16 year old girls and their dates who are only there with the hopes of getting some heavy petting).

30. Oklahoma has suffered record breaking snow fall…

For a while I thought I was back in Chicago.
Wander Radio is still cruising along.

Currently in production.
Free Air Season one Pirate Radio is in production.
Episode 3 of Podiobook “Vassal of EL” by Gloria Oliver is in final.
Currently working on Valentine’s Day Mixtape (Should release Monday)
Episode 58 is in production I have my spotlight artist and selected various tracks.

Currently thinking about a Wander Radio Newsletter to cover all podcast news that I had in the show… that is just in the idea phase…

Other than that – not much…

31. Reports like that drive me crazy. The text of the report admits it could come down to people who drink water over soda might simply have a healthier diet overall and that could explain the difference. More fear mongering.

32. Speaking of scripts…
IMHO –
A better ending for 3rd Man would be to have the girl extradited to the Russian section … where she is re-united with her boyfriend whom she was in league with the whole time. In fact, it would turn out that Harry had outed her forged passport to make sure she would be basically brought to him in the safety of the Russian district.

33. I like the idea of less e-mail, but FB is not communication. I’ve seen grown divorced people talk to each other in extremely hateful ways where their teen and everyone else could see. Not pretty.

34. Oh ditto… I envy you right now. Not for your shitty day tho. I had my own :). Fucking ugh.

Enjoying a nice glass of Cucapa Obscura. Yet another brew not on Pintley

35. What I wouldn’t do for 3 drags.

I picked up a Folly Pack from New Belgium 2night. Has their new Spring Seasonal in it. Of note: Left Hand is getting rid of Jackman’s, which is one of my favorites and replacing it with a new APA. Hm. I gave the Left Hand guy a look and bought New Belg instead.

36. Ill be right over

Good job! We beer fans have to vote with our wallets/pocketbooks. That being said I better buy a few sixers of Jackmans. Liked it alot. Heres hoping the APA in its stead is as quality

37. Comment:

Tegan and Sara blazing at 11 makes the pooshit Friday melt away quite nicely.

You lesbos get all the cool rock chicks!!! Boo!!!! 😉

38. Yeah, but the entertainig asshole to my right is more talkative tonight.

In more important news saison dupont is so different on tap versus bottle.

39. I do not see the hatred toward Girl Who Kicked the Hornets nest. Besides desperately needing an editor, I found it a very worthy and satisfying addition/end to the trilogy. Then again, this IS from the guy who liked Played With Fire the best 😛

40. I’m Here Lo but then I have yet to watch any of the movies or read any of the books.

I think the alcohol is affecting my spacial coordination.

41. Its Cucapa Brewing Co in Baja Cali. I wouldnt call it ambrosia, but its nice to see darker craft brews (or craft brews in general) being attempted south of the border.

That does sound wonderful. Belgian on tap is a good find.

42. It is interesting the diffetence between bootle and draft belgian beers. It is like the diffetence between pure CO2 stouts snd nitro stouts. It makes me think that Le Merle is closer to Dupont’s saison than I originally thought.

43. Belgian on tap is a marvelous rarity.
RE: The Swedish “Girl Who” movies: I don’t think any of em were bad.

Did you know that the guy who directed those three is the Let the Right One In director’s brother? How’s that for useless trivia?

44. Finished “A Game of Thrones” today. Excellent recommendation, my dear EssBee.

Though, the audiobook is frustrating. The narrator was excellent, but the editing job was terrible. sections kept getting repeated.

Will be interesting to see how this turns out on screen with the upcoming series. Though I’ll likely wait to check it out on DVD after the first season airs. Haven’t been able to bring myself to pay for the “premium” movie channels in a long long time.

45. Although this weeks was not a season best, was nice the way they just jumped into an episode focused on the alternative universe without a cheesey line of text.

46. Google’s Chrome must have a problem with UK English, I get the following error when I click on help:

This Help Centre is not currently available in your language. However, you can select another language from the “Change Language” drop-down menu at the bottom of the page or download Google Toolbar, which can instantly translate websites in 42 languages.

47. Hey pan. Spent 10 hours trying to download a movie on the XBox. Not sure if it’s XBox or Shaw (our carrier). But we shut it down as it was only at 20% after all that time. Will try again tomorrow

48. We went out today and most of my bonus on an elliptical. I told hubby when we went out I only wanted spend about half of it. I don’t know what happened.

Oh well, he gets to spend tomorrow in the basement figuring out where it’s going to go. It doesn’t get delivered until Tuesday

49. On a (slightly) related note, the new caps are killing my daughter. Her boyfriend loves to torrent. They are often well over, sometimes by two to three times their limit. She’s trying, unsuccessfully, to get him to stop before it breaks them

50. My hubby only had one drink tonight. I say this because he was commenting on how singer was doing at singing the US anthem for the hockey game. It’s two Canadian teams playing. There was no US anthem sung.

Maybe he needs more alcohol?

51. Do you think professional hockey player’s mouth guards are custom fit to their individual mouths? Or do you think they purchase generic ones in bulk?

Just wondering

52. I was just thinking “I can’t get drunk on chocolate” then remembered I have a bottle of Godiva chocolate liqueur in the cabinet. If I didn’t have a mind-bending migraine right now I’d make a chocolate martini and…

53. So I ended up in the comic book shop with the kids yesterday. . .

There is really a wide gulf between kids’ comics and books for grownups. When did that happen? I considered calling ditto or Andrea for a 1-issue recommendation, because I have no idea anymore. I asked the guy what the A, T+, etc ratings mean, but got a vague answer.

Apparently Marvel have killed off one of the Fantastic Four? Is this their new publicity strategy?

54. I can’t help with a 1-issue rec, Jack. I read about 4 never-ending series . . .

We just watched The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest. We really enjoyed it, but the books are SO MUCH better. Noomi Rapace is very cute.

55. ***** FANTASTIC FOUR SPOILER IF YOU CARE BUT IM NOT REALLY SHURE WHO WOULD****

Jack- Re:FF…yes, they killed off a certain “flamer” and replaced him with a certain “webslinger”.

kinda dumb.

56. In my quest to play ‘Chuckie Egg’ on as many different computer as possible, I played it on an emulated Tatung Einstein (only 50, 000 made made in the real world) via MESS.

57. Finished my video in time to race to the funeral service.
Not before I came down with a cold though.
Got home and found my TiVo had died.

I think I will crawl in bed and try again tomorrow.

58. … and it is another day.
Full blown headcold and it seems the main storage drive on my workstation has quit.

For some reason, I am suddenly remembering “biorhythms” .
When I was in grade school we had a teacher who introduced us to those. What an odd thing to bring up to grade school kids. Don’t know why I’m thinking of them now. Bet there is a site about them somewhere.

In other news … I see that those snobs at the Grammy’s have YET AGAIN snubbed Jack Mangan. When will they recognize the musical genius that is he? When WHEN!!!

59. I don’t remember what I initially wrote, but I’mma share my morning.

[—]
Monday
Monday
Monday

Woke up with migraine.
Someone charged $550.00 to my iTunes account, using my PayPal account. (I’ve started investigation)
My garage door came off the tracks. I kicked it hard.
My dog ate my shoe.

60. Good-ish news: I’m in Colorado Springs at Memorial Hospital with my mom, who appears to have just come out of major spinal surgery successfully. I’m sleeping in the room with her – chats welcome tonight!

WHEW.

61. True Grit got 3.2 Burning Blades out of 5 on the Lo Pan meter.

New favorite beer – Alaskan Baltic Porter

New non-favorite beer – Rogue Mocha Porter

Go get better JJ. Fo sho.

62. Big time get better, yos.

We survived the night, but it was a long one. Watching the second hand tick from a hard chair in a chilly recovery room = boo. But mom seems to have done better this time with what was a very serious and complicated surgery.

63. I’m sure everyone who was interested already got a copy, but… Steam has Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY for $7.50 today.

Or you could just get the Square Enix Complete Pack which includes: Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Hitman: Blood Money, Battlestations: Midway, Just Cause, Hitman: Codename 47, Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition, Deus Ex: Invisible War, Thief: Deadly Shadows, Tomb Raider: Legend, Project: Snowblind, Rogue Trooper, Infernal, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Kane and Lynch: Dead Men™, Conflict: Denied Ops, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Shellshock 2: Blood Trails, Battlestations Pacific, Just Cause 2, Yosumin!™, The Last Remnant™, Gyromancer, FINAL FANTASY XI ULTIMATE COLLECTION, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days, Kane & Lynch 2: The Doggie Bag, Kane & Lynch 2: Alliance Weapon Pack, Kane & Lynch 2: Multiplayer Masks Pack, Order of War™, Mini Ninjas, Flora’s Fruit Farm, Just Cause 2: Bull’s Eye Assault Rifle, Just Cause 2: Rico’s Signature Gun DLC, Just Cause 2: Chevalier Classic, Just Cause 2: Agency Hovercraft, Just Cause 2: Monster Truck DLC, Just Cause 2: Black Market Aerial Pack DLC, Just Cause 2 – Black Market Boom Pack DLC, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition, SEASON OF MYSTERY: The Cherry Blossom Murders, Supreme Commander 2, Supreme Commander 2: Infinite War Battle Pack, Front Mission Evolved, Front Mission Evolved: Map Pack, Front Mission Evolved: Last Stand, Front Mission Evolved: Wanzer Pack 2, Front Mission Evolved: Weapon Pack 2, Front Mission Evolved: Wanzer Pack 3

and is only $74.99 instead of $606.68.

64. Well I shall have to agree with Lo Pan this time, True Grit was rather wonderful.

Although I do think the original’s plot made a smidgeon more sense.

65. Oh you silly, uninformed, overly outraged, easily manipulated American public.

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/02/polls-show-americans-largely-clueless-about-where-us-budget-goes.php

Seems that the one area that all American’s agree we should cut spending on is “foreign aid”. The poll at the above link shows that on average American’s think we spend 27% of our budget on foreign aid. Turns out it is 1%.

Further irony is that most of the aid money goes to U.S. contractors as it is used to buy (among other things) tanks, planes, weapons systems and training. So cutting out foreign aid does little to bring down our deficit but WOULD raise U.S. unemployment. Oh what a tangled web we weave.

Other note –
While a majority of respondents said we should not CUT defense spending, a majority disagreed with the statement that “We should RAISE our defense spending to be 3 times what any other country in the world spends”.
Truth is though … the U.S. spends SEVEN TIMES more then the next biggest spender, China. So they don’t want to cut defense … but it is currently more then twice what the average citizen thinks we should be spending.

Ah the American sheeple.

66. Hello all you boys n girls
Id like to take you to the inside world
Its quite the irregular place to be
But never fear youre safe with me

Well…maybe…

67. Quick Lo Pan approvals:

Blood: The Last Vampire the anime – 4.7 Egg Shens out of 5
Its wonderful

Blood: The Last Vampire the live action film – 1.9 Lem Lees out of 5
I mean its awful. Just suck upon filth

68. To be fair, Nomad, the high score is due to the fact that I watched both back to back. I’m thinking the mo vie was such suck that it bumped the anime up a few notches. Also I found the setting quite pleasing.

Ive just started Blood+. So far its pretty ok, but Im only on Ep 5

69. Lo: I enjoyed Blood+, but it was too long; some storylines dragged a bit too much. I greatly enjoyed the score which was done by Mancina & Zimmer.

70. Thanks, everyone. Although her recovery is a long road ahead of her, and I”m stressed because I”m leaving for San Diego for 7 nights for a terribly timed business trip, I am so relieved.

Sly B is going to spend a week with my parents while I’m gone. How many spouses would do that?! I’m freakin’ lucky, y’all.

71. Out of the 19 items from the 60’s I had 7 and one from the list of the 70’s (I was at that crossover stage).

I’m feeling a little depraved…ummm, deprived too.

72. All I had were a few Star Wars action figures (70s), an Etch’a Sketch and some Hot Wheels (60s). Oh, and Legos (40s). When I was small, I had a used Tonka Truck (50s). That’s about it for me.

73. In slightly better news … I found another beer store with a good selection.
Todays harvest includes –
Kasteel Triple Belgian Ale
Corsendonk Christmas Ale
Samual Adams Double Bock
Samual Smith Oatmeal Stout
Bell’s Brewery “Two Hearted Ale”
and my favorite “Trois Pistoles

74. Ok
So I’ve read through all the paper work that came with this medication but it doesn’t say anything about no alcohol.
However … it does say that common side effects are dizziness, headaches, mild diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and ITCHING IN THE GENITAL AREA !

There is no way I am going through 7 days of THAT without a beer!

75. Well if all you have is the cold, or flu, you wouldn’t have been given antibiotics anyway. Probably don’t want to even attempt to drink, even one beer, and drive while on the meds though.
