  1. Hay :pan:
This is a new one on me. I just burnt my finger on the read/write head motor and power distribution area of the PCB from a Hard drive. But they didn’t let out any of the magic smoke. weird this will make typing a bit slower today it kinda hurts to type the y u i h j k n , keys and mouse click (ouch)

  2. Today was like one of those fly dreams
Didnt even see an Al’Kesh flashin those high beams
No band of Brutals lookin for the man
Two in the mornin got the Deadpan
Even saw the lights of the Goodyear Blimp
And it read “Jack Mangan’s a pimp”
Drunk as hell but no throwin up
Half way home and my I-Tunes sill blowin up
    Bubba HoTep starred J.F.K
I got to say it was a good day

  3. Tarzan wasn’t a ladies’ man
He’d just come along and scoop ’em up under his arm
Like that, quick as a cat in the jungle
But Clark Kent now there was a real gent
He would not be caught sittin’ around in no
Junglescape, dumb as an ape doing nothing

    Supermen never made any money
For saving the world from Solomon Grundy
And sometimes I despair the world will never see
    Another man like him

  4. Hey Bob, Supe had a straight job
Even though he could have smashed through any bank
In the United States, he had the strength, but he would not
Folks said his family were all dead
Their planet crumbled but Superman, he forced himself
To carry on, forget Krypton, and keep going

Tarzan was king of the jungle and Lord over all the apes
But he could hardly string together four words: “I Tarzan, You Jane. “

  5. Ugh. Mayonnaise. I don’t like it except as an ingredient in things like potato salad.

And why do restaurants in the midwest insist on adding it as a secret ingredient on everything?

  6. nulloperations :Short work out for my first time. About eight to ten minutes.
    Still, it’s a start.

Dude. good for you, man. Seriously as one who’s been allergic to working out forever, the first step is indeed the hardest.

  7. ditto :Ugh. Mayonnaise. I don’t like it except as an ingredient in things like potato salad.
And why do restaurants in the midwest insist on adding it as a secret ingredient on everything?

Because that all they can milk from the rats.

  8. nulloperations: Well done! When I first ran, I went 1/4 mile. I don’t know how much more I could have done, but I had the rare bit of sense (rare on my part) to take it slow and not injure myself. One step at a time!

Cj: I’ve neglected to congratulate you on your sales figures. Congrats!

  9. Hay :pan:
have my second interview tomorrow and the day off! I’ll let ya’ll know around noon (CDT) how it when. I would LOVE to give a 2 week notice on Monday.

  10. RE:Mayonnaise

I missed the meeting where it was decided by the companies that packaged sandwiches should replace margarine with mayonnaise.

  11. Would love to hear talk about Pink Floyd. Couldn’t keep to just The Wall as each of their albums offer so much.

Anyone listen to On An Island? The album sounds like an eerie happy version of Pink Floyd.

  12. I usually refrain from bashing other podcasts… but “For Those About to Rock” not only is the worst music podcast Ive ever heard, it may be the worst podcast ever. I actually wanted to jump thru the computer during their Alice in Chains show and rip their mouths off to make them stop speaking. GRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anger….

I saw some Gilmour concert footage awhile back with that material. I was pleased to hear him getting back to a classic Floydian sound, had intended to dig further.

  14. @ditto
Yeah, you were the strong silent questor in this episode. In Episodes 10 and 11, we get to see just how strong your character is. You also have several more lines in Episode 11. I will send out the scripts right away.

  15. First time I heard Pink Floyd was just after hearing Alice Cooper for the first time. I dumped my Go-Gos tapes and Michael Jackson and never looked back. Quite simply to say, music changed my life and I think for the better.

  16. JRMurdock :First time I heard Pink Floyd was just after hearing Alice Cooper for the first time. I dumped my Go-Gos tapes and Michael Jackson and never looked back. Quite simply to say, music changed my life and I think for the better.

SO you told the Go-Go’s to take a vacation and Michael Jackson to beat it?

Ugh… why do I do that?

  17. So, yesterday, life is good – Opera Mini posts to the Deadpan.

Today, not so much? I can pull it up and read comments. I can even write a comment. But, hitting the send button just makes the page reload with nary a sign of my babblings to show for it.

    Maybe my Droid knows best?

  18. So I was going to post another Unshow to test another feed-problem theory, but it suddenly got to be 11:52 at night.
I hope everyone got through this evening with little injury to self, loved ones, and property.

    Goodnight, Ice Cube.

  19. Pink Floyd:

The first I ever heard of them was the one time I went out for a local BBS meet & greet when I was… somewhere between 16 and 18. After meeting Pooh Bear and SwampFox and … others, we went … somewhere and watched The Wall on a the biggest projection TV I’d ever seen with the loudest, biggest speakers I’d ever seen. Biggest boobs I’d ever seen, at that.

After, the guys started playing (trying to play?) Van Halen (who I’d never heard) and I didn’t understand what the hell they were doing because they didn’t turn on the amps, so it was like violent shaking and no sound.

Sometimes I think my entire life should be a Dumbass Memory.

  20. :jack: – Troubleshooting….

IE throws back an error on the feed that says:

A CDATA section was not closed.
    Line: 1557 Character: 30

    < ![CDATA[ cough

If we can figure out what line 1557 is, maybe we could get a step closer to figure out why the feed is being annoying?

  21. Vanamonde :Ah young love. Overheated a young couple arguing over whether the lad should keep his playboys. He wants to get rid of them, she doesn’t care.
    Everybody say Awwww..

    *sound of whip cracking*

  23. On a related debugging not, since I’m doing a lot of that at work right now…

Why do people insist on doing completely idiotic things that obviously don’t work? If they spend 2 seconds thinking about what they are writing, there would be fewer problems.

Of course, the above occasionally applies to me.
    But only occasionally. 😉

  24. jackmangan :
    @Nomad Scry
I kid you not, this is what shows up as line 1557 in the feed validator output:
    # < ![CDATA[
    cough
Strangely, that validator doesn’t list 1557 as an error.

The problem is that there is no closing ]]> for that line.

  26. Hello, weekend.

Glad to hear we may be drawing to a fix on the Feed. I’m sure there are lurkers out there who are probably wondering if Deadpan is no longer pan.

I know, with as many podcasts that I follow, there have been a few times where one has had problems, but I didn’t pick up on it for a few weeks until it clicked that I hadn’t played a show in a while.

We need Jack’s feed fixed! Won’t somebody think of the children????

    🙂

  28. EssBee :
Is it weird that all of this feed/code/techy talk that I absolutely do not understand is turning me on a little?

[Say baby] You know, I think if you run the feed with 1.21 gigawatts through the flux capacitor at line 1337, then the validator might return a 1955 error. [/Say baby]

  29. Good luck, reaper!

So, would it be inappropriate to call his prospective employers and advise them to “don’t fear the reaper?”

  30. OMG, could this week stop sucking my butt? I was practically just accused of trying to defraud my company’s worker’s comp insurance. Why would I do that?

  31. On a completely different note: I normally don’t like book tie-ins to games or movies. However, I’ve really, really enjoyed the Gears of War novels by Karen Traviss.

  32. Well I’m working Saturday so no Friday feeling till after tomorrows shift.

On the plus side, I’m off for the week and visiting some friends in Wales for a few days.

  33. When it comes to cars, cleanliness is next to awesomeness. Finally had a nice day (and more importantly, the promise of little rain next week) to get out and scrub and blast away the layers of crud and muck that have attached themselves to my ride for the last several weeks.

It’s amazing what that does to my disposition.

  34. So on the way to the train station this morning, stopped by two young lasses (judging by the glittery clothes and death warmed up look had been out on town all night) and asked:

    do you live round here?

I satisfied their curiosity by answering yes.

There is no point to this tale.

  35. Vanamonde: Very cool. I just tried to load Star Fleet I onto my laptop. I enjoyed it very much on the Amiga. The work-to-enjoyment ratio seems a bit high for me to figure out and get running.

  36. Cj: Holy crap! That must’ve been simply EPIC! Count me as jealous!

Jack: Woah! I had no idea such a feud existed. I have no experience with the ST, but I find it hard to believe it was the superior machine.

  37. Technically superior.. No. More affordable..he’ll yes.

Computer feuds have been going for as long as they have been home computers and families tgat can only afford one computer..

  38. Fun with buzzwords:

Today I heard a commercial for CSB (Connecticut School of Broadcasting). Near the end, it was announced that you should get involved in the “New Media” by getting on the radio. That’s right, the “New Media” is FM!

  39. I know not everybody thinks this way, if they did I wouldn’t be ranting, but I can never understand open casket ceremonies. Whenever I think of someone, I’d rather the last vision in my mind be of what they looked like alive, not dead.

  40. Oh. I just realized how this looks. No I’m not posting from the funeral. THAT would be wrong. Home now. Hubby shovelling the walk. I’m deciding what to watch on TV.

  41. Bunny: I’m with you on that one. I have a hard time even bringing myself to go to a funeral at all. On the rare occasion I do show up, I stay FAR away from the casket at all times.

  42. I agree TEB, although in the UK the usual practice for bodies to be put on display for the relatives at the chapel of rest and not at the actual funeral.

With my Dad, we all decided we wanted to remember the way he was when he was alive and healthy.

  43. @DJ Bunny

I agree 100%. That is never the way I want to see anyone nor is it how I want to be seen. Ever.

As a matter of fact – please don’t anyone ever have a funeral for me! I am still fully on board with having my ashes mixed with fireworks and shot into the air in a joyous celebration of life.

When I go out – I want to go out still twinkling!

  44. Although I do remember the story of this old bloke who wished that when he died, his body to be ground up and fed to dogs at his local dog shelter.

The dog shelter refused the request.

  45. Vanamonde :
They claimed the meat would be too tough for the dogs to eat.

    that’s funny 😆

Supper done. Now setting up to kill me some trolls. Where’s my flaming maul?

  46. My wife has explicit instructions to spend as little as humanly possible on my funeral. If it was legal, I would have her dump me in a field somewhere and have a BBQ with our friends and family to remember me. My worst nightmare is that someone will waste money on “my final resting place” or anything to do with it when that money will benefit me not at all and them quite a bit.

  47. Although you may need to try later as I’m getting a ‘being modified’ error.

Oh and Morning Pan, a lazy day planned and a Sunday dinner that will make me feel like I’ve been stuffed and put on display in a museum later.

  48. I play Torchlight occasionally. It’s your stereotypical dungeon crawler but is an ok time waster until something else comes out (Mass Effect 2 next week, Woo Hoo!)

  49. @Ed from Texas

I hate to admit it but hubby and I never saw Farscape. We were thinking of getting the discs and watching it if it came out in Blu-ray. More to see what the hype was about than anything else. I guess that won’t be happening.

  50. And finally, re. the Zero Punctuation awards, I never did play Arkam Asylum. It’s not that I didn’t want to, it’s just that there are too many games I play as it is and I never got to it. not likely too now, already have three games on pre-order and the year has only just started.

  51. Now I’m off. Going to read for a bit, then hubby and I are off for to the movies.

:CR: The Men Who Stare At Goats by Jon Ronson

  52. The Energizer Bunny :
    Morning Pan!
Saw Crank 2 last night. Sorry LoPan but the only thing I could think of as I was watching it was “WTF”

Yeah… its THAT good. “WTF” is so much more a satisfying feeling than “oh thats a pretty movie”.

  53. I’ve never seen Farscape. I’m guessing that it’s yet another thing I should add to my Netflix queue? I’m moving up Babylon 5. I can’t wait forever to start watching the series.

I saw an episode or two of Lexx (sp?) It seemed like a B-movie-level sci-fi sexploitation series. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I doubt it would keep my interest.

  54. Lady J put Toys in the Netflix queue. It was unbearably bad.

Legend wasn’t bad until the ending. And the characters looked great, since they weren’t CG. Well, that and whasshisname was the devil-guy. Ya know, from Rocky Horror.

  55. Whoa. Chang in the machine. I must admit, this old style takes less time for my touch to load. But the other version is prettier. And having the comments at the top is easier on the thumbs.

  56. Chang = change

listening to hubby play with his flying V (not a euphamism) . About to start reading for an hour before Mythbustwrs start

CR: Pandora’s Star by Peter F Hamilton

  57. You know what? I don’t think I’m going to correct words created by my fat fingers on the i-Touch. You guys are smart cookies, I think you can figure out what I’m saying 🙂

  58. JN:
Lexx was pretty good for a few episodes, but it fell victim to the “Three’s Company” syndrome (every episode had the same esential plot: person A overhears part of a conversation with people B and C, and misinterprets… hilarity ensues). With the Lexx, it was: the gang stumbles on a new planet and person D finds out how powerful the ship is and wants to steal the Lexx from them… adventure and hilarity ensue.

  59. My wife and I enjoyed Lexx for what it was. Though, we got into the series prior to having seen the original mini-series(es?). Thing made a lot more sense after getting the background story….not that they ever made much sense at anytime.

  60. Got caught up on the last two week’s worth of Legend of the Seeker. Just got to say that Bridgette Regan in the dress and boots she’s been sporting of late is about the hottest damn thing I’ve ever seen. I can’t quite decide if it is more goth or steam punk.

They are also following the general story of the book in a very loose fashion, as they did with the first season. Still I can enjoy the TV show for the version the story it tells as much as I can the book.

  61. Thanks for the overviews. I have to say, the new boards are more eye-candy-licious, but I do prefer the nipples to flow downwards.
