Jack Mangan’s Deadpan #139: Flash in the Pan, Part 1

Klytus Show Notes

Part I of the focus on the 1980 Flash Gordon film. We had about 800 people together in one room, recording a roundtable conversation.

The first 8 minutes is fun to hear, but the true Flash Gordon talk starts at around the 8 minute mark.

Yes, I know now that it’s General Klytus.

The website we talked about.

  1. Where is everybody? Don’t make me spreadsheet alone 🙁

I’m going to toast a bagel. Somebody better be here when I get back.

  2. It’s also the typical, “it’s really close so I don’t go except when I have people to play tour guide to.”

Canmore and Banff are very close but hubby and I rarely go. We do try to hit the Tyrell once a year though, just because dinosaurs are cooler to look at than mountains 🙂

  3. Mornin’ Pan!

    <Short block of text>
Regarding E-Readers: The reason I haven’t bought one is because the price point is still to high for casual purchase. So, I’ve had this brilliant idea – The government should subsidize these e-readers and fund for research: Why? you ask – Because the argument can be made that they are environmentally friendly. People should be given tax credits and incentives to read electronically available formats.
    </Short block of text>

Of course, no one will listen to that garbage…

  4. I don’t want a tablet as an e-reader. I want one because it would support my preferred style of working. I do a lot of design work, especially on whiteboards. so I’d rather do that using a stylus than by fighting with stupid programs such as Visio.

  5. It may or may not be good. I just need to plan for the worst. The hubby’s day job is destroying him. He’s miserable. The way I see it, the only way I can help is to get a job so he can quit.

I have mad spreadsheet skillz…maybe someone needs that type of thing.

Most likely, I’ll be seeking customer service phone stuff. That’s where I really “excel” – haha…

  6. I feel kind of guilty. Even though I complain about month end, I actually like my job and am glad for it.

My hubby wants to get a notebook. You can get one for about the same price as a Kindle or other E-Reader and it will not only act as an e-reader but will do so much more too.

  7. You needto be careful playing the enviromentalcard with e readers. Especially with a device that uses non sustainable resources in both it’s construction and continualuse (howmany kindle owners recharge their units with electricity generated fromnon fossil fuelled sources..not many I would wager).

  8. I really never ever ever treat myself to toys (hence the cell-phone from the 1950s), so I’ve never even looked into any type of technological replacement for dead-tree books. Mr. Bunny’s logic seems spot on, if a notebook costs about the same as a Kindle.

    Plus.

Phone, iPod, laptop sometimes, sonic screwdriver – – how many damn tech devices am I supposed to carry around on me at one time??

  9. Jack: I agree with that too. I hate hauling around tons of devices. And then there is the disposal problem. That’s why I’m hoping they finally develop a tablet that I can use as my primary computer. They aren’t there yet, imo, but then I’ll just have to carry around one thing.

  10. That bodybuilder is quite impressive. People like that give me hope that I will not retire into the easy chair like so many do. Also of note is that he’s Asian. Not known for their muscle-mass. Well done!

  11. Darn it. I hate when I can’t remember lyrics correctly.

    That should have been:

The wolf he howls, howls up at the moon,
out on the steps beneath my hotel room.
Was in the woods behind this little town
we went flying up through the silhouette trees,
    then crashing down.

Colours brighter than I’ve ever seen,
More wired than I’ve ever been – and the faces turn to stone . . .
On through the gates again – what a wonderful way to go . . .
What a wonderful way to go

(not sure why I felt it important to correct that)

  12. Oh I found it through Google. I’m satisfied now.

In the movie The Silence of the Lambs, the serial killer Buffalo Bill told his captives to “rub the lotion on the skin” in order to keep their skin soft and easy to remove from their bodies…

If you have seen the movie you should know that the serial killer “Buffalo Bill” was having sexual issues and decided to make an outfit from the skin of women his size in order to please his need to be a woman.

He would capture women and put them in the dried out well in his basement and starve them to make their skin loose and easy to remove.

He used the term, “It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again”, to make the young women put the lotion on their skin for fear that they would be sprayed with the water hose….

And yes it is from The Silence of the Lambs.

  13. Easily one of the most disturbing movies you’ll ever see. These aren’t CGI monsters, but fully-believable psychopaths. Hopkins’ Hannibal is one of the great screen villains.
And it was quite an accomplishment for a movie that fcked up to win the Best Picture Oscar.

  14. I feel like somewhat of a Philistine, but other than a few classic lines, I’ve always found “Silence of the Lambs” a bit overrated. Not a bad film but not great either.

  15. I’m not watching that. Will not click the link. Won’t do it. Can’t.

    OK I clicked it.

    It started.

    I closed it.

    bock bock bock

Sorry, Jack. I can’t do it.

  16. The big dog in The Sandlot was too scary for me. I guess James Earl Jones meant to return the baseball back to the kids, but when he gave it to Kevin Cosner instead and walked off into the cornfield, that was pretty unexpected.

  17. My own spoilers made me curious about other famous spoilers and so I was looking at this wikipedia entry http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Spoilers and this sentence cracked me up:

Sometimes the title (James killed Mary in Silent Hill 2) itself is a spoiler (In The Breakup Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn break up; in Debbie Does Dallas, Debbie does Dallas).

I always wondered if Debbie REALLY did Dallas because in the movie I saw called Debbie Does Dishes I really don’t remember Nina Hartley (who played Debbie) actually “doing” any dishes. (I swear this is a real movie even though I can’t find it on imdb)

  18. Olive Garden

“Now that the Olive Garden has pulled its ads from Letterman’s show because they say his Palin joke was “not consistent with our standards and values,” someone has to figure out a way for me to boycott a restaurant I would never eat at in the first place.”

  19. Whenever someone tells me they are craving Italian food and then they suggest we go to Olive Garden – I explain to them that they are mistaken.

  20. ditto: Floridema’s FTW – that’s my favorite place to get Italian at least near me.

There is also an awesome restaurant in Scottsdale called Sal’s. It was my dad’s favorite. So when you make it to town – we’ll do some REAL Italian! 🙂

Food.. we’ll have food… I’m not “doing” any Italians.

I don’t understand my sudden need to clarify that.

  21. Crap. I don’t know an X restaurant.

I gotta go pick up Sarah from school…

I leave you with Z Tejas and

CP: George Thorogood & the Destroyers – One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer

  22. I was going to get up to put on some music so I could have a CP: but my dog just crawled in to my lap. that makes it really hard to get up he is such a sweet little dog

  23. Jack I have a lazy chihuahua(deer colored apple headed). some times I wish he would play a little longer but more often than not I think it is better that is a not high strung. I can’t imagine a house with out a dog in it. no offence to any other panners cats are not my thing.

  24. My daughter just set her phone down by Simon (my dog) and my wife texted her to see what Simon would do. He looked at the first buzz and jumped up staring at his couch pillow (where he was laying) at the second buzz. He is such a funny dog.

  25. JR Ewing is from Dallas and Philo is from UHF.

Cj is from the land of OMFG I’m so tired right now stupid spreadsheet is being e-mailed to rightful recipient in 15 minutes.

  26. Nomad – UHF

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098546/

Incredible Weird Al Yankovic movie. IF you like silly spoofs, you need to see this movie, like yesterday.

Not sure how old you are, but for people like me that were teens in the 80s, all of the references make sense. To the unfortunate (or fortunate depending on your point of view on the 80s) young folks that missed the 80s, many of the references will go eastern airlines (yet another 80s reference). But the movie has plenty of references to standard genre stuff like Raiders of the Lost Ark, that anyone (even my 12 year old daughter) can get the majority of the jokes.

  27. Thanks. I doubt I’ll be checking in much this next week. I don’t know what kind of condition I’ll be in after travelling to the far side of the world (how’s that for Western-centrism 🙂 ) and working in the foreign office every day.

Today, I finally, really, have to get packed.

  28. So … Ed is on travel next week and so am I. Let the rumors begin!

(*crosses fingers* oh, please let them involve super models … please let them involve super models …please let them involve super models …)

  29. Downside to travel – I was going to actually make a point to go see “Zombie Land” in the theatre. Don’t think I’ll get a chance while on the road and this flick, while looking fun, doesn’t look like it will be in the cinema for long.

  30. Now …
    Got to do laundry.
    Got to pack.
    Got to work out ittinerary.
    Gotta go buy supplies.
Got to get cleaned up for a lunch meeting.

Oh … and it looks like it might be a good morning to buy stocks at a discount. Need to do some studying.

    busy busy busy

  31. Lejon: One of those pretty interesting coincidences: We just received Watcher in the Woods yesterday from Netflix. I’ve never seen it, don’t know if I’ve ever even heard of it. We watched about half of it last night and it is indeed creepy and enjoyable for a Disney flick.

I’m with Cj on the Silence of the Lambs and the sequels. Not my cup of coffee.

Saying that the Olive Garden serves Italian food is like saying McDonald’s is fine dining.

UHF is a very good movie, IMO. Even non-fans of Mr. Yankovic often enjoy it.

I think that’s all the nipple-catching I can do. Those nipples are greasy!

  32. Zombie Land better still be in the theaters in a few weeks – I’ve already got a group from my office planning to see it after I return. Of course, I may be one of the zombies by that time…

  33. Is it just me or is WP acting a little strange? It’s not blocking my comments or anything like that, it’s just… flashing every time I post. As if it wants to block but then changes its mind.

Kind of hard to describe, it just doesn’t seem right ❓

  34. Out-of-context comments are sometimes better than Mad Libs:

    # Lejon (Some Guy from Chandler) Says:
    October 2nd, 2009 at 9:54 am

He slides across the floor, silently, oh so very silent, like a shadow on the moon. He glides up behind her and…

    # ditto Says:
    October 2nd, 2009 at 9:55 am

I had the special: a pepperoni, sausage, and mushroom calzone.

  35. Disney will probably not remake Watcher in the Woods – They’ve got a “family friendly” lie…er, um IMAGE… to uphold, and they’d be hard-pressed finding an actress as good as Bette Davis to fit into a remake, but this film could totally be redone with a PG-13 rating and make some serious cash…

  36. LJ: While I may not care for Limbaugh, it’s not him I object to. I had the name long before the dittoheads came around, and I’d rather not be thought of as a mindless zealot.

  37. I hate to ever get very political onpod, but I’ve been contemplating an upcoming segment on this subject. Limbaugh is one of a handful of key profiteers behind our entire contemporary U.S. politico-cultural disaster.

  38. I’m feeling productive today! I’ve cleaned a bathroom and am blasting through Cisco curriculum. I just reached Section 4 of Ch. 5! (The first 4 sections of Ch. 5 are text, then there’s the Labs section, the Review section, and the quiz.)

  39. Yeh. Limbaugh actually does shoulder a good deal of blame for the success of “Hate Radio”. He made a fine art of spinning opinion as fact with the specific purpose of inciting a mob. He was a master of pin pointing the fears of white middle class Americans and then stoking those fears with blast furnace ferocity.

In my book though, what really makes him a poster child for the “Evil Deuchbag” classification is that he did all of that not out of some fervent, misguided devotion to a political view … he did all of that to further the Limbaugh “Brand”. His devotion to this country is only as far as capitalism kept making him rich. The outlandish statements and hate group pandering was simply to boost his ratings. He would/will say anything that gets him national attention.

What sets him apart from the world’s other media whores is his complete lack of interest in who gets hurt or killed as a result of the HATE he dishes out. As long as it brings him attention and dollars it is (in his book) all perfectly OK.

  40. J0e has touched upon many of the points I’d intended to make. Limbahhh and his cronies are in the Anti-Left Industry. They spit hatred about Obama because it’s profitable and gets Garth Brooks fans fired up. Yes, they are racist too – – but there’s no money in white fear. They do that on their own time, like a hobby.
And anyone who doesn’t goosestep to their hate fund drives – – whether it be Obama, McCain, Clinton, Paul – – becomes a target of vitriol.

    🙂 I’m gonna stop there 🙂

  41. In defense of Limbaugh (probably to his detriment):

I find it interesting that you cite him as such a large influence and cause of villainous distress in the U.S. Yes, he has listeners. Quite a few, in fact; however, so do Howard Stern, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Bill O’Reilly.

But, naturally, Limbaugh is the leader of a mass cult of influential republican followers (his “ditto-heads”) who have ransacked the government to give us this crap economy by force… I’m sorry – I really am, but I just don’t buy it.

Limbaugh is an entertainer. That’s it. He let’s his conservative opinions shine on his sleeves. He makes no bones about the fact that he’s a “Rah-Rah” Republican, party-loyal to the core (which was probably his real mistake). He is a talented rhetorician, and he will happily argue you into a corner if you can’t back up your facts. But, all of this he puts to use for the purposes of entertaining those people who are like-minded and listen to his show.

I freely admit that I used to listen to his show regularly. I had a subscription to his newsletter, and I bought one of his books. In the time that I indulged in his brand of entertainment (a couple years), I never once found him to be racist or a fear-monger. Don’t misunderstand, he is definitely extreme in his views, but he does/did not promote racism, nor does/did he tolerate racist viewpoints, and he is/was a staunch promoter of rational thinking by supporting one’s opinions with statistics and fact.

That said, he doesn’t hold much weight with me any longer. It’s not because he is any less of what he was, and not because of the scandal with his addiction to painkillers (for which I would also rally to his defense, but I’m already treading deep as it is). I simply outgrew the extremist point of view.

I’ve never subscribed to any party available in our political system, largely because by tossing in my oar with one or another, I lend support to whatever platform they choose to support, whether I agree with it all or not. Since, I feel a little more integrity in my bones than simply jumping on a bandwagon, I walk the independent road and vote for whom I feel suits their office best.

Limbaugh, for all his blustering, has never influenced my vote.

  42. Excellent points made, Lejon.

There is no right-wing conspiracy – – it’s not a secret society or a coordinated effort; it’s just a system corrupt deuches use to win power and cash. It *is* an industry. He’s not the only leader and the only problem in that industry, just the biggest.
The problem: his industry’s tactics and the message of his output are more dangerous and harmful than Stewart’s or Maher’s. They’ve never resorted to croc tears or bully tactics to compel agreement. They make their money by criticizing all political inconsistencies, and putting the punchline before all else. There is no industry of reasonable folks to counter hysteria from all political extremes.
I disagree that promotes a reasoned approach, because he deliberately omits facts and logic to make his unfailingly pre-determined opinion.

I’m also being slightly unfair by assuming he’s a racist, just because he’s also an outed hypocrite (calling Jerry Garcia “another dead doper” while struggling with his own chemical addiction?). He *IS*, however, a bigot against anyone he considers too far to the left. Which is every one of us.

  43. Just a few Limbaugh quotes:

I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark.

Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.

When a gay person turns his back on you, it is anything but an insult; it’s an invitation

  44. So tonight is the new Stargate series premier — I’m going to catch that, even though I haven’t seen the other series. And of course, Dollhouse is on again, which I love.

    JOe, where ya goin’?

  45. I equate Limbaugh with that dope from Prison Planet (whatever the hell his name is, he’s not worth Googling). I try to ignore them and hope they go away.

Jack: I really liked Something Wicked This Way Comes when I was growing up. I rented it a year or two ago to reminisce. It really doesn’t hold up to the ravages of time, IMO.

  46. Truth is stranger than fiction … I am headed to Washington D.C. on Sunday.
I just might take some names.
I just might kick some ass.
… or I just might chew some bubblegum – and I have a LOT of bubblegum!

  47. Drive by from Texas in India….um, yeah.

Probably will be absent this week, but I did want to share that I’ve safely arrived in Bangalore. It’s 3am here, but I’m not sure what time my body thinks it is. Still, I must try to get some sleep.

    Panny on…

  48. 12hrs later and I’m finally bak home.
Tired but tons to do before I leave for D.C. in the morning. Can’t decide if I should take the lap Top.

    … and, Yea Ed!
Spreading the Deadpan far and wide.

  49. Morning Pan, just watched Stargate U. This show looks like it is going to be awesome. I have watched every episode of SG1 and SGA and this one looks like a darker version of the other shows. can’t wait for more!

  50. Morning Pan!

Hubby off doing his music thing with the guys. I’m sitting here watching the snow fall out my living room window. If it wasn’t for the fact it’s snow, I’d say it’s nice an peaceful looking.

  51. SG-U had a bit of a BSG feel for me. The scientist even struck me as Baltaresque in his actions and words.

That being said, we still enjoyed it and plan to continue watching it.

  52. Random thought: I’ve been going on FB less and less lately. I’m lucky if I’m on there once a week now. I have no real reason why, it’s just the way it is.

  53. Morning, everyone!

Snow, Bunny? It’s chilly here, and the windows are all steamed up because I’m making soup today, but no snow yet.

    I can’t wait to watch Stargate U.

We watched Dave Chapelle’s Block Party last night and LOVED it. I now swoon for Jill Scott.

  54. Morning all, just did my second round of dishes. Doing laundry and pulling toilet paper out of my trees is on the agenda for this afternoon. I love having drunken kids renting out the house next to mine.

  55. My third load of laundry is in. I have a cup of ginger mint tea beside me and a kitty on my lap. Now I’m going to watch The Secret with David Duchovny. Happiness is a B-movie on a Sunday afternoon.

  56. EB: chilly weather combination

I’m living in Florida after years of New York State. Chilly weather would be great right now, but it made it all the way up to 93 degrees yesterday. On the other hand, the year pass at SeaWorld and Aquatica has lots of time to pay itself off.

  57. Just Finished Watching: Season premiere of “Three Rivers” on CBS. I like it. If “House,” with all its vitriol, sarcasm, and rule-breaking, is like a shot of orange-flavored liquor, “Three Rivers” is like an orange-juice chaser. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE “House,” but I can enjoy medical drama with not-as-extremely-messed-up characters, too. I’ll keep watching. 🙂

  58. NS: Yes, SeaWorld is like Marine Land. They have places where you can see large aquariums with sharks, killer whales, manatees, etc. They have shows with Shamu the killer whale or sea lions. They have amusement park rides and they have fireworks on the weekends. Lots of fun and way more “cheese” (as in, this place is really cheesy) than any one person can handle. Aquatica is the water park owned by, and across the street from SeaWorld.

  59. Amy Bowen: Thanks for nothing all of your help!

Lard has a song that I believe is around 24 minutes called “Time to Melt”. It should not be given a try.

  60. The Green Carnation album “Light of Day, Day of Darkness” contains only one song but it is over 60 minutes long. I noticed that Amazon is selling the one song MP3 for 99 cents. I think I’m going to buy it today.

  61. Interesting list of epic songs there.

I’d add “The End” by The Doors and Iron Maiden’s “Rhime of the Ancient Mariner”, for starters. Coltrane’s “Blue Train”, if jazz is allowed.

  62. Mike Oldfield’s “Tubular Bells” is another 2-track album, with each song clocking in somewhere around 25 minutes.
And of course, there’s 23-minute “Echoes” by Pink Floyd.

Oh sorry, we’ve already moved on 🙂 Who’s getting brushed?

  63. LJ: No list is perfect. Plus, I’m tired of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Isn’t “Hey Jude” less than 10 minutes in length?

Jack: I’m doing OK. Need to see another doctor this week.

    TEB: Hugs sound good.

  64. I’m think I have had enough silliness also. Time to play some more Super Smash Brothers Brawl. I love games that don’t take themselves seriously.

  65. Lejon: I don’t have a bluray player yet but we have purchased bluray disks when the price is right and they had to come with the DVD and downloadable version.

  66. reaper: the issue I have is that I already own a DVD copy. So, while I don’t officially have a working BluRay player at the moment, is it worth paying dues to the Mouse Machine to get this? How much more detail could the bluray version contain?

The movie was made in 1939, even a fresh digital transfer would have limited success. The digital “restoration” might go more toward making this special, but from what I’ve seen, they’ve decided to keep a wide screen aspect ratio, rather than the original 4×3 – which means that no matter how well restored this version is, there is still detail from the original film that has been edited out “to fit your screen”

Still, I’ll have a bluray machine at some point… so is it worth it?

  67. Sounds like you feel the indulgence is worthwhile, Lejon. If budget and others with a say in your budget approve, then go for it.

If a better version comes out in the future, you can still dump this one.

  68. Lejon: My vote is no. I’m stunned at the increased detail you see in a movie from the ’90s when it’s fully HD. But that’s live-action. I think your points illustrate my doubts as to an old cartoon HD/BluRay-ified.

On another note, it’s sad to think of how gorgeous those old Disney animated movies were compared to the Mermaid/Beauty*Beast/Aladdin Hanna-Barberra-quality cookie-cutter tripe they’ve been tossing out.

I think I had a point, but I’ve lost it.

  69. Lejon: I’d not say “scaled back” so much as “tossed in the dumpster”

On another another note, did you ever watch the “updated/enhanced” version of Robotech? Pretty dreadful.

  70. at this point I won’t be replacing DVD’s with BluRay Disks (abbreviate BRD?). Even DVD’s in an up converting player make me happy enough.

  71. Somehow I missed the first few episodes of Questers from FPM (If I’m spelling and/or hearing any of this wrong, it would explain my difficulty in finding it) and I’m having a hard time finding any mention of it in the show notes. Is there an efficient way for me to locate the existing episodes, or (preferably) is there a centralized location where they exist and can be listened to without having to search through entire deadpan episodes to find them?

  72. The Questors From Effpiem, Episode 1: The
Dead Pan is in Deadpan Episode 100
The Questors From Effpiem, Episode 2 (Part 1): The House of the Sophia Pulchra is in
Jack Mangan’s Deadpan #106: Three Stories

The Questors From Effpiem, Episode 2 (Part 2): The House of the Sophia Pulchra is in
    Jack Mangan’s Deadpan #107

The Questors From Effpiem, Episode 3: The Lost Traveler is in
    Jack Mangan’s Deadpan #117: Nice

The Questors from Effpiem, Episode 4: The Centaur Court is in
Jack Mangan’s Deadpan #124: Get Motivated

The Questors from Effpiem, Episode 5: The Traveling Merchant is in in
    Jack Mangan’s Deadpan #127: Knock-off of a Care Bear

The Questors From Effpiem, Episode 6: The Pantomime Play is in
Jack Mangan’s Deadpan #130: Underworld Garlic Salt

The Questors from Effpiem, Episode 7: The Home for Infinite Winners in
Jack Mangan’s Deadpan #135: Bigger and More Sinister

  73. I’m entirely conflicted about the whole BluRay vs. DVD vs. digital conflict. For now, I am really quite happy with the way my upconverted DVDs look. But I’ve seen some of the Pixar BluRay stuff and droooooooled. But physical medium means either a carousel or getting up to change the disc and I’m sooo lazy.

I think for now the deciding factor is how much money I have in my wallet. So DVDs it is. Heh.

  74. Usedhair: YES!!!! Go to my blog and there are show notes for every episode of “The Questors from Effpiem*,” including links to all the past Deadpan episodes that contain my episodes. Enjoy!!! 😀

http://amybowen.wordpress.com/ (Click on the category “Guest Appearances” in the right sidebar)

*Yes, it is indeed supposed to refer to FPM, but I wrote it as “Effpiem” in the story text and on my blog.

  75. There’s a broken beam inside of the big big bridge
I guess that whole thing is caving in
Maybe it is time I learn how to swim
    I’ll be a dolphin, I’ll be a dolphin

Sometimes I think I’m breaking down
And other times I think that I’m fine
But something got into my engine
    It slowed me down
Now I got to turn this whole thing around

    I’m gonna be a dolphin… I’m gonna be a dolphin
    I’m gonna be a dolphin… I’m gonna be a dolphin

    There’s not a lot I believe anymore
I mistrust everything I had been longing for
There’s not a lot that I know anymore
But I know if the good bridge is burning

You gotta be a dolphin… You gotta be a dolphin
You gotta be a dolphin… You gotta be a dolphin
    — POE

  76. In my head, that song is always linked with the following:

we went down to the edge of the water
you were afraid to go in
you said there might be sharks out there in the ocean
and i said i’m only going for a swim

i was swimming around in a circle
    i wasn’t always in view
you said we might get into red flag danger
and i am alone when i’m not with you

    but i am no mermaid
    i am no mermaid
and i am no fisherman’s slave
    i am no mermaid
    i am no mermaid
i keep my head above the waves

we were swinging from the centre of the ceiling
you were afraid to give in
i said i know i’ll always live for this feeling
and you closed your eyes you said never again

we were dancing in the middle of the desert
you said we’ll burn under the hot sun
i said i’d rather be the colour of pleasure
than watch like you from under the thumb

    but i am no mermaid
    i am no mermaid
and i am no fisherman’s slave
    i am no mermaid
    i am no mermaid
i keep my head above the waves

we went down to the edge of the water
you were afraid to go in
you said there might be sharks out there in the ocean
and i said i’m only going for a swim

i was living around in a circle
    i wasn’t always in view
you said we might get into red flag danger
and i am alone when i’m not with you

    but i am no mermaid
    i am no mermaid
and i am no fisherman’s slave
    i am no mermaid
    i am no mermaid
i keep my head above the waves

    — sinéad lohan

  77. Hmm How about..

i get confused when i’m tired
but the last time i saw you
    we were in a room
    with sunshine in my eyes
    and water on the floor
    i watched you float away
    take me with you

    a long time ago
    we were walking around
    we were rolling around
    in the graden
    in the garden
    i saw you turn around
    and still you turn around
my eyes are playing tricks on me
    how i miss you

    I could be your lover
    chained under the water
    under the water
i could be standing on a ladder

    to make it easier
    to make it easier

    your eyes are colored stone
you’ve got an earring through your nose
your chains are made of gold
i dont think they would float
but floating is what you do
    that is beautiful
    that is you

    i could be your lover
    chained under the water
    under the water
i could be swimming out to save you
    no one ever saves you
    to make it easier

    i’ll be your lover
    under the water
    i could be standing
    to make it easier
    — Merrill Bainbridge

  78. I’m not familiar with Bainbridge, though the lyrics are nice. Kinda surprised I haven’t heard of her, she’s from the right era and genre.

Also — Your spreadsheet-ness is starting to scare me. Go to bed! *chuckle*

  79. we spotted the ocean at the head of the trail
Where are we going, so far away
and somebody told me that this is the place
    where everything’s better, everything’s safe

    walk on the ocean
    step on the stones
    flesh becomes water
    wood becomes bone

and half an hour later we packed up our things
we said we’d send letters and all those little things
and they knew we were lying but they smiled just the same
It seemed they’d already forgotten we’d came

now we’re back at the homestead
where the air makes you choke
    and people don’t know you
    and trust is a joke
    we don’t even have pictures
    just memories to hold
    that grow sweeter each season
    as we slowly grow old

    — Toad the Wet Sprocket

    To continue the water motif.

  80. Looking down into the water
Its hard to make out your face
If our love is drowning, then why
Do I feel so out of place?
    Bubbling up to the surface
Are you getting a breath of fresh air?
Forever longing to make you mine
But I cant escape your stare…
    Liquid seeps into your lungs
But your eyes look so serene
Its wonderful how the surface ripples
But youre perfect, and I cannot breathe
Forever longing to make you mine
But I cant escape your stare…
Hold me closer, keep me near
    My underwater love
Hold me closer, keep me near
    Ill never get enough
    Touch me from below
    Ill never let you go
    But I cant escape

Faith No More – Underwater Love

  81. She dashed by me in painted on jeans
And all heads turned cause she was the cream
In the blink of an eye I knew her number and her name
She said I was the tiger she wanted to tame

Caribbean Queen now we’re sharing the same dream
And our hearts they beat as one
No more love on the run …..

Ooops.. that’s sung BY Billy Ocean — water theme … screeching halt.

and yeah.. I have two more itsy bitsy spreadsheet projects after this one. No sleep just yet.

  82. Come with me, my love
To the sea, the sea of love
I want to tell you oh how much I love you

Do you remember when we met?
That’s the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you how much I love you

    Come with me
    To the sea
    Of
    Love

Do you remember when we met?
That’s the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you oh how much I love you

    Come with me
    To the sea
    Of
    Love

Do you remember when we met?
That’s the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you oh how much I love you
    –Del Shannon

  83. Take a look in the pool and what do you see
In the dark depths there faces beckoning me
Can’t you see them it’s plain for all to see
They were there oh I know you don’t believe me.

    Oh…I’ve never felt so strange
    But…I’m not going insane.

I’ve no doubt that you think I’m off my head
You don’t say but it’s in your eyes instead
Hours I spend out just gazing into that pool
Something draws me there I don’t know what to do.

    Oh…they drain my strength away
    Oh…they’re asking me to stay.

    Nightmares…spirits calling me
    Nightmares…they won’t leave me be.

All my life’s blood is slowly draining away
And I feel that I’m weaker every day
Somehow I know I haven’t long to go
Joining them at the bottom of the pool.

Now…I feel they are so near
    I…begin to see them clear

    Nightmares…coming all the time
Nightmares…Will give me peace of mind.

Now it’s clear and I know what I have to do
I must take you down there to look at them too
Hand in hand then we’ll jump right into the pool
Can’t you see not just me they want you too.

    Oh…we’ll drown together
    It…will be forever.

    Nightmares…forever calling me
    Nightmares…Now we rest in peace.

  84. Black shadow hangin’ over your shoulder
Black mark up against your name
Your green eyes couldn’t get any colder
There’s bad poison runnin’ through your veins

    Evil walks behind you
    Evil sleeps beside you
    Evil talks AROUND you
    Evil walks behind you

    Black widow weavin’ evil notions
Dark secrets bein’ spun in your web
Good men goin’ down in your ocean
They can’t swim ’cause they’re tied to your bed

    You just cry wolf
I sometimes wonder where you park your broom
    Oh black widow

    C’mon weave your web
    Down in your ocean
You got ’em tied to your bed
    With your dark, dark secrets
    And your green, green eyes
    You black widow

    Evil walks so bad

  85. Morning Pan, last day at my sisters before heading home, going to check out the 3D version of Toy Story (no double bill in ripoff Britain).

  86. I guess in the craziness of the last few days I neglected to mention that the family enjoyed the Double-Feature. Both kids sat happily through the entire show and the older child even wore her 3D glasses and uttered the word “cool” many times.

Anyone who happens to watch my husband’s tweets should know by now what is going on here so, please excuse me if I’m a bit skittish for the next few days, weeks… etc.

  87. My mother came to Hazard when I was just seven
Even then the folks in town said with prejudiced eyes
    That boy’s not right …
Three years ago when I came to know Mary
First time that someone looked beyond the rumours and the lies
And saw the man inside …
We used to walk down by the river
She loved to watch the sun go down
We used to walk along the river
And dream our way out of this town …
No one understood what I felt for Mary
No one cared until the night she went out walking alone
    And never came home …
Man with a badge came knocking next morning
Here was I surrounded by a thousand fingers suddenly
    Pointed right at me …
I swear I left her by the river
I swear I left her safe and sound
I need to make it to the river
And leave this old Nebraska town
I think about my life gone by
And how it’s done me wrong
There’s no escape for me this time
All of my rescues are gone, long gone
I swear I left her by the river
I swear I left her safe and sound
I need to make it to the river
And leave this old Nebraska town …

    — Richard Marx, Hazard

  88. I’d like to catch the 3D Toy Story but the rest of the fam gets too much eye strain from it to enjoy it.

    Morning Van.

If I had any magic thoughts, I’d send some of them your way, Cj. But it seems to me that yall will be fine, well, once you get past the “pass the Tums” of it.

  89. Yup. Tums are like a major food group right now. How’d ya know?

That and Tylenol PM – which is going to get me through this dark night.

See you on the bright side.

    Good Night Corn Meal Mush

  90. Follow You. Follow Me – Genesis

    Stay with me,
My love I hope youll always be
Right here by my side if ever I need you
    Oh my love

    In your arms,
I feel so safe and so secure
Everyday is such a perfect day to spend
    Alone with you

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year

    With the dark,
Oh I see so very clearly now
All my fears are drifting by me so slowly now
    Fading away

    I can say
The night is long but you are here
Close at hand, oh Im better for the smile you give
    And while I live

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year there will be

I will follow you will you follow me
All the days and nights that we know will be
I will stay with you will you stay with me
Just one single tear in each passing year…

  91. I write prettier than I talk, Nomad. I wish I had a Southern drawl, but alas I have the Southwestern speech pattern I’ve got. People tell me I sound Canadian, but after listening to Bunny on the MMMMMeetup recordings, I now that’s not it.

    How are you today, sir?

  92. Depends on -which- southern drawl. South Carolina, no offense to anyone intelligent to be here, but I hate the state and I hate the accent. It just sounds… stupid. Virgina has one of the cutest, most drop dead sexy accents. Tennessee is pretty standard and tends to amplify the character of the speaker.

And if True Blood is any indicator, Lousiana has a cute and stupid accent. Sooookie, I do declare.

I don’t consider Texas southern, but I did hear some excellent drawlin’ the one time I popped out for a visit.

As for Canadian, After listening to Mark (Encaf1) and Mike Plested and the amazing Bunny, I’d have to say they all sound pretty non-accented to me. Nice voices, clear diction, but a kind of “standard” accent.

I, myself, am doing great and exercising my tired and out of date southern drawl. Soookie. LOL

  93. Oooh, them’s fightin’ words . . .

Not really! But I do think Charleston is a fantastic city if you can look away from the glaring racial divide in wealth long enough to notice.

For my job, I spend loads of time in the deep South – I’ve logged lots of hours in Louisiana (mostly New Orleans, which is an anomaly in the South, but also New Iberia, Baton Rouge, and Monroe), Savannah, Pensacola, and Moblie. I think folks are just folks, honestly, no matter where you find yourself, but political and religious climates do tend to the more . . . ahem . . . restrictive the further South one travels. Of course, I’ve encountered giant asshats in Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, and other big, supposedly progressive cities just as often as in BFE Louisiana.

  94. The only job I’ve ever been fired from was in SC, down in Charleston, and the fake reason was because I “laughed at a customer” (she made a joke and I laughed) but the real reason was my ponytail and black clothes scared the manager.

Charleston is pretty bad when it comes to how blatant the racial lines are, but drive a bit north to Greenville/Spartanburg and it’s even worse. The white folk live in nice old houses with pillared front porches on clean streets… meanwhile, hop over the ivy covered fence with the barbed wire and you’ll find the colored folk living with their chickens and pigs in little better than shacks. Three shacks to one house. They’ve managed to hide their “problem” behind a facade. I was a young teen when we lived there, so it didn’t really dawn on me what was going on till after we’d left and I started noticing that everyone just acted like people.

Other than SC, I am starting to think that I prefer the simple straight forward confrontation of the South to the stick-em-inna-back of NJ, NY, CT, MA. At least you know when you are in trouble down there. I mean, I cannot imagine the city of Chattanooga fining someone for having foot long grass in their front yard.

    Too heavy, eh?

  95. Not too heavy. The racial lines are incredibly distressing particularly in the South. I believe it’s a self-breeding super-virus. All that will come of allowing it to continue is more of the same, over and over and over again. It’s a fucking shame.

Now I am off to Evil for a day of fun. Month-end activities for me. I love that someone with a Master’s Degree in American Literature and Women’s Studies (me) does accruals/deferrals for a $6M business unit. It’s totally typical of the place.

Have a great day, all y’all.

  96. One more comment: race is also a huge problem that goes largely unaddressed in pseudo-liberal Boulder County, Colorado as well. It’s just not as easy to see if you’re not looking.

  97. I just can’t stop this morning, but after this, I am TOTALLY leaving . . .

Bunny, I’d have to challenge you on what you say based on my family (Sly B’s brother and his wife and 3 kids) who live North of you on the Cree reserve in Hobbema. The conditions there are deplorable, and rival reservations in the U.S. in terms of poverty, abuse, lack of services (education, police, clean water), and etc. Other than the native population there, I can’t speak to Canadian race relations.

  98. EssBee, while I admit there are issues, I’m afraid I won’t get into native relations. My mother use to teach on a reserve, and I have Meiti blood in me. I will say there are plus and minus’ on both sides of the argument, but don’t feel this is a proper forum for that kind of a debate.

  99. I wondered what was wrong with my cat. It sounded like he was doing a monster job of scratching in his catbox. And then, five minutes later, he’s doing it again.

Yeah, he’s been closed up in the coat closet for an hour. D’oh.

  100. Today is the birthday for a friend of mine who I have totally lost contact with. I don’t even know her full name, so it’s kinda hard to use Google-fu to find her. So… bah.

  101. Huh. I can’t remember any of my other cats giving more than a passing interest in moving bugs. Vex will actively and accurately hunt down bugs and if they are up out of his reach, he’ll warble at them. It’s like he is say, “Fly into my mouth.” And then he eats them.

  102. That’s not far from the truth, Scry. We live by railroad tracks so, if it’s a particularly cold winter, we will occasionally get a mouse find its way into the house. My cat hates it when that happens (has only occurred three times in the 13+ years living here)

  103. And that’s the downside to my cat. He barely tolerates sitting on the same couch as us. When he was a kitten, he’d sleep with Jade, but now that he’s a big teenager he sleeps by himself. *pout*

  104. Whew, almost forgot to park my car on the street. They’re tearing up the sidewalk in front of my house and I wouldn’t have been able to get it out of the driveway when I went for lunch with my Boo later today.

The only reason I remembered is I heard the garbage truck and I thought it was the city in front of my house. Glad I made it in time.

  105. I think I have to give up now on trying to find my friend. I dug through my old email address and pinged off 4 bad addresses, found and google’d her “real” name and pestered a few mutual friends. No luck.

    Ah well.

  106. Back to the water theme for a moment…

    I wish I was a fisherman
    tumblin’ on the seas
    far away from dry land
    and its bitter memories
    castin’ out my sweet line
    with abandonment and love
no ceiling bearin’ down on me
    save the starry sky above
    with light in my head
    with you in my arms…

i wish i was the brakeman
    on a hurtlin fevered train
crashin head long into the heartland
like a cannon in the rain
with the feelin of the sleepers
and the burnin of the coal
    countin the towns flashin by
and a night that’s full of soul
    with light in my head
    with you in my arms…

And I know I will be loosened
from the bonds that hold me fast
and the chains all around me
    will fall away at last
and on that grand and fateful day
I will take thee in my hand
I will ride on a train
    I will be the fisherman
    With light in my head
    You in my arms…

    Fisherman’s Blues — The Waterboys

  107. If it helps ease the sting, I’m paying off a $400 data charge from two months ago from a gap in unlimited coverage caused by ordering a new phone for Jade. Gah. It couldn’t have been more than a few days at that. Double Gah. No, Gah squared.

  108. *waves at ditto*

I was going to say that I like her “Under the Water” quite a bit more and then some bad harmonica and silly male vocalist kicked in and my enjoyment fled. Ugh. That was a cruel twist.

  109. Well Toy Story was as good as ever, wasn’t that impressed with the 3D makover..too subtle at times.

The train carriage I’m travelling stinks of urine..

  110. I’m already sleeping, but I wantted to ask before I forget (again.)

Is anyone else here going to be doing NaNoWriMo this year? I’m foolishly assuming that Amy will be doing her usual 35000 words in a weekend, but I’m not sure who else has participated in the past.

  111. Nomad Scry: I may entertain the idea, but I’ve got so little time already. So doubtful. I will forward a link to Lady J though. Hopefully it’ll spur some interest in her.

  112. Since both of my underwater lyrical contributions last night were about murder. . . I’d considered posting the lyrics to “Octopus’s Garden” as a cheerier counter. But I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.

    I’d like to be,
    Under the sea
    In an

    – – No, see, I just can’t do it.

  113. It took an hour and lots of cursing but I finally got the weight stand put together. Now I’m all hot and sweaty and in badly need of a shower.

Jack, that costume doesn’t show enough skin. She should have had less cloth and more green body paint 😉

    Shower Time!

  114. Hi sports fans.
Didn’t have time to read “back” posts, so I have no idea what’s going on.
Just thought I’d say “hi” and that, after driving 1.3 bagazillion miles to Washington D.C. – I spent my 2nd day here finding a tire dealer that carried a replacement for the one I blew out (2 blocks from my hotel) and then figuring out how to find them (in Maryland), driving there and then sitting in their waiting room for 3 hours.

I’m back in my hotel room and 2 Cosmos in the bar have re-adjusted my attitude.

I have yet to meet the President. Have met the homeless … and really good Chinese food.

  115. BTW – one high lite of the trip is the store I saw when I got lost. Better then the fact that they had misspelled Clothing as Cloathing … was the fact that the “C” had falled of their sign.
Yep! They were offering “Discount LOATHING” .

    This raises some questions.
( ) “Loathing can be bought?”
( ) What IS the going rate for loathing?
( ) What about “You get what you pay for?” What quality of “Loathing” can you expect for “off the rack”, discount hate? I mean seriously, won’t it be more of a dislike or at best a mild abhorrence?

    “Discount Loathing.”
    Heh

  116. Hm. jJ

I think I just won the lottery on *New and Improved* Self-Loathing.

    Nothing discount about it.

I’m desperately searching for the RMA department.

  117. OK. Finally caught up, and my day has slowed down, so it’s my turn for water works:

I dream of the ocean and the beautiful skies rolling out to sea
I dream of the ocean and the rip of the tide west of Finnistair
The weight of the water pouring down, holding on to me
I dream of the ocean, rising, rising

I dream of the ocean – through the night the ghosts are sailing still
The James Caird steering east by north-east through the wild Atlantic swell
The men lie soaked and cold beneath the sail on a bed of ballast stone
They hear the boss cry out – I can see them now, the snow-capped peaks of land
But it was the ocean, rising, rising
A forty foot wall of water crashing down
They held their breath and prayed to God in the hour of death
    To save them
    From the ocean, rising, rising
I dream of the ocean, rising, rising

And so the years they flow and journey’s end
The old crew sailed south again
And they buried the boss by the melting snow
In the summer winds on the island
And now the ice it cracks and falls away, driven in the storms
And I’ll be there – where the sky touches the sea
At the edge of the ocean where the beautiful world fades into the grey
I dream of the ocean, rising, rising
I dream of the ocean, rising, rising

    -Ocean Rising, Justin Sullivan

  118. Lejon: I’d like your input. Macross is, to me, the only Robotech series worth watching. When the Masters were brought in with the Cyclones and whatnot, it really took a dive. And don’t get me started with what followed. Mechs fighting with huge speakers? Seriously? Anyhow, Netflix just presented me with The Shadow Chronicles. Have you seen this? And is it one of those deals where it’s mostly cartoon with computer-rendered mechs? I hate that. Yeah.

  119. Evening, DP!

I totally respect your position on the issue from this morning, TEB. I have strong feelings on it, and they can stay right here in my brain.

Today really put the evil back into Evil Inc for me. Those asshats.

Tonight: red beans & rice from the crock pot and last nights Big Bang Theory.

Enjoy DC, JOe! Total hell hole, of course, but there’re all those monuments.

  120. So, yeah. I hate to bring my grief to the pan, but sometimes I just feel like I have nobody to talk to… So my grief for today…

I’m under some stress, but I have to keep my chin up and be supportive of others around me whom I love. That’s no problem. The pushing down of my angsty feelings on the other hand causes my body to go into rejection mode.

Soo… I haven’t been able to keep any food down today and I have a lovely stabbing pain from my lower neck up to my right eye. I have a hotpad all up on my face and neck right now providing enough relief to be up and about for now, but I really need a hot bath… for about 48 hours.

The water only stays hot for like 20 minutes though. How irritating is that?

    Damn stupid water.

  121. Catchup post:

Van’s god sign: I checked out alpha.org and came away feeling skeezy. I’m okay with people believing what they believe, but I don’t hold with proselytism. Especially hidden agenda proselytism, which is what alpha feels like.

ditto’s alpha: Maybe he *redacted*. There was a single line in Epitaph One that suggested he’s *redacted*. I think it was right around the point where Echo breaks back into the *redacted*

    Jack’s cthulhu: Kinda cute/cool, kinda footey-pajama/embarrasing.

Mr. Nul’s safety aware: The phishers are getting better. I used to be able to tell from just the header info, but I’ve had a few recently that I actually opened before I realized it was a sham. I’d hate to think what non-paranoid people are going through.

Cj: When I’m stressed to the point of freaking out, I’ve found that a “sleepytime” herbal tea with Skullcap, Hops & Valerian Root goes a long way to letting me relax enough to sleep. But that’s for me. I find sleep to be the reset switch I need. I know for others it is other stuff, like being in water or… well, that’s all I know of actually.

While you taste a piece of mine
Can you feel the mellow crawlin’ fast
    Drummer baby rhythm blast
Pump it Pump it pump pump it up
Nothin’ can make this one stop

    You’ve got to move this

And I always thought it was
    Don’t you know it’s a baton

  123. NS: I like you more and more every day!

So, yeah. I talked with my doctor about my stress/anxiety and the interesting thing he told me was that I need to get more sleep. Hmm. That was an interesting suggestion.

  124. Morning Pan, hope things get better for you soon Cj, I’m off home today.

Been a nice break, and things went way better than I ever expected, still in a bit of a daze about that.

    Time to finish off packing.

  125. More sleep? Interesting concept. I do hope that you’re asleep as I type this, Cj. Feel better.

And yeah, Nomad makes a damned fine addition to our little group here.

Van, I meant to buy you a drink to congratulate you on your happy times!

    Goodnight mraz.

  126. Just finished listening to this episode (is there a Pan name for the episodes?) for the second time and laughed just as hard as I did the first time. Yall sounded like you were having an utter blast at the DeadpanMmmmeetup. *mildly jealous*

  127. Good morning!

    I share the Nomad love.

    Van, YES!

Cj, HUGS. It’s great to take care of everyone, but you can’t do that well if you don’t also take care of yourself, girl.

It’s humpday. I’m watching a LOST episode before going to Evil this morning (mid-way through Season 4 now), working my day, and then getting a tattoo at 6. Yippee!!

  128. Cj: I’m really sorry to hear you aren’t doing well. Please, please take care of yourself. Stress does nasty things to your body. That’s one of the major reasons why I’ve been sick for so long.

  129. I agree: NS has been a fine addition to this crew. And, not to leave LJ out, so has he. Some of the lurkers should chip in more. We don’t bite. Much. 🙂

  130. EssBee Said, “Cj, HUGS. It’s great to take care of everyone, but you can’t do that well if you don’t also take care of yourself, girl.

Thanks. I do have a tendency to do that. I’m having these very selfish thoughts lately of wanting someone to take care of me. It reminds me of one of my favorite movie lines actually… where I get to be Superman in the equation:

You’ve got me? Who’s got you? — Lois Lane

    😀

  131. TEB: There’s a reason why I live 1000 miles away from my family. I love them, but it is much easier to love them from a distance. 🙂

  132. Well, I certainly love and appreciate every one of you. I think everyone brings their own special touch to this place more than you could possibly know.

You help me through my days by giving me laughs, comfort, and thought provoking ideas.

    *grouphug*

  133. Cj: I’ve long been an insomniac. It’s something I manage without resorting to drugs. My major problem is my brain just doesn’t shut-off when I want to go to sleep. So, I have to do relaxing things for about an hour before bed.

The punching bag is a new thing that I’m hoping will reduce some of my stress.

  134. Well, I’m off to volunteer in my daughter’s classroom.

I dropped her off at school and it was raining which was quite odd considering how sunny and not cloudy it is. It felt REALLY good on my face though.

  135. Lessee . . . that’s a lot of nipple we have here.

I agree w/TEB and Nomad Scry re: Chick-thulu

Cj: I hope this improves for you soon. I agree with the above-stated recommendations. I would also add meditation. Just ~10-15 min. a day can make a world of difference. I also also would like to give a thumbs-up to valerian root to help with slumber.

  136. Well… no. I just was craving crust. I was going to sprinkle some cinnamon on it… but it’s not going to happen. I can’t find anything to my liking.

  137. Yes, we’re a wonderful, eclectic community, with each person bringing something different, unique, and valuable to the table. I’m afraid though, that I’m going to have to ask Alvie and Jason C to stop coming around here.

  138. Cj, my hubby likes to take my left over crusts and have me put jam in it and make a type of popover.

Sometimes he’ll have me sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on it as well, before cooking

  139. ditto, are you trying to get me drunk? Don’t think I didn’t see that. You know a little bit of vodka for the pie crust.. a little bit for Cj.

Don’t think I don’t know how you men and your wily ways work.

  140. JØ: RE: Robotech: I agree, Macross was the strongest storyline of the original series “Robotech Masters” or “Southern Cross” was the weakest. I felt pretty good about “New Generation”, but I’m looking back on it from over 20 years (I’ve been trying to rewatch the series, but I can’t get through Southern Cross…GRRrrrr).

I have, unfortunately, not seen Shadow Chronicles. Hulu has it, and I came close to watching, but failed. I enjoyed the first half of Macross Plus, only the first half because that’s what’s available for instant watch on Netflix – Now, I’m waiting on the DVDs to roll to the top of the queue.

From what I’ve seen of Shadow Chronicles, there did seem to be a lot of CGI, but I couldn’t make out whether it was everything, or just the mechs.

My apologies for being lame on this one.

  141. OK, now that I’ve finished catching up:

Cj: *hug* – I have no advice for ridding you of pain. Sorry. I have enough problems getting past mine. I seem to just live with it. Sometimes I’m surprised when I don’t feel it anymore. Although, I like all the bath suggestions, and that vodka and pie-crust idea really gets me, right There, ya know?

ditto: *blush* I just try to fit in… I didn’t think anyone’d notice.

TEB: DON’T EAT THE YELLOW SNOW! Wait… sorry, DON’T DRIVE THROUGH THE YELLOW SNOW!

NS: I think you’re cool, just because you’ve listened to more than one of my podcasts. You have no idea.

  142. The weather is so incredibly beautiful today. We are going to the park after I pick up Sarah from school. Meeting with 3 other moms and having some nice outside time. I’ll be up late working tonight to replace the work-time I’m missing this afternoon, but it will be so worth it.

  143. *sigh* There’s a guy here at work who has a lot of pre-built graphics that express his opinions which he sends out as reply-alls to company announcements.

He recently sent out a Little Rascals image of Buckwheat with the word “Oh-Tay!” printed across him.

All I can say is: Eddie Murphy quoted Porky’s line. Get it right people!

  144. My elementary school used to play either Little Rascals or Three Stooges films when it was too rainy to go outside for recess.

That’s about all I’m qualified to discuss on that topic. . . Didn’t Bill Cosby buy the Our Gang rights in an attempt to bury them for their 1930s-culturally-acceptable racist jokes?

  145. Home now. Isn’t that exciting?

Hubby is showing Google street view has gone through Calgary. It’s pretty scary going past our house.

  146. Right now mom is trying to convince us that, even though it doesn’t work, we should donate our old tv to charity. I’m trying, and failing, to covince her donating garbage is silly.

  147. I am re-doing the weekly shut down procedure documentation. It’s amazing how much has changed in the two years since I first made these up. And amazing how little has changed.

  148. Jack: Not a big deal really, I just didn’t pay the bill. Oh and neither did my brother, my other brother, or my sister. And then AT&T charged me a $400 usage charge on a line with unlimited usage. So they want their almost a grand back before they’ll restore service. Which is kinda reasonable from their point of view.

Ah, the luxuries of life. =)

  149. That’s an interesting recipe for pie crust but… I wonder if it leaves any residual vodka flavor. The concept behind the recipe sound pretty brilliant, but ughspleghgag on the vodka flavor.
