  1. Saw Cowboys and Aliens tonight. Went to the drive-in for it and that was exciting in and of itself due to the storm. Rain, lighting, the works. Had to close my window and bring my feet in.

I do believe the movie got a little stupid at one point and it was highly predictable, but I enjoyed it anyway… lots of eye candy for me to be honest. Harrison Ford did look old, but still very delicious. That was pretty much a win for me no matter what.

  2. Ha! I win!

While I was on holidays my (new) boss thought I had done some calculations wrong and did an adjusting journal entry. I come back, double check the figures, talk to my boss, and it turns out I was right. Now she has to reverse her adjustments. It always feels good when you’re work is vindicated *fist pump*

  3. So GoDaddy has the domain michael-jackson-not-dead.info on auction for $8.

I want to buy it and just put a page saying “Yes Virginia, Micheal Jackson is dead.”

  4. Stupid stupid power company.
Had an AMAZING electrical storm last night and now, 13 hours later … still no power. BUT JUST ON MY STREET!!!
In fact, the house on the corner of my street and the main street has power.
There are NO downed lines or power poles. I suspect some one just needs to come out and reset a breaker.
    grrrrr.

I have cobbled together enough battery power to get my modem and wireless router going so I can check on the outside world. Laptop is down to 82% power.
    Stupid power company.

  5. The storm was amazing though.
It aproached for 2 hours with this spectacular lightning display. When it finally got here it graced my neighborhood with 38mph winds breaking trees in half and uprooting some. Then the rain and wind mostly stopped and it proceeded to lightning, non-stop for an hour.
With no power I just sat there in the dark trying to count the breaks between flashes and there was none. For an hour. It was like an out of control discotheque! At one in the morning my eyes were too tired so I crawled in bed but didn’t sleep well because of the flashing and thunder. At 3:30 in the morning I gave up on sleep and got up to call the power company and report the outage. When I went back to bed at around 4am the lightning was now pausing for almost 10 seconds between flashes.

It was one of the more awe inspiring weather phenomenon I have ever witnessed!
Then I got dressed in the dark this morning and went to the Dentist for a cleaning.

Now I am tired and my teeth hurt.
… and my fridge is defrosting.

  6. Wrote Asimov, “Through the agency of Mr. Spock, Star Trek has been capitalizing upon a fact not generally known among the male half of the population. Women think being smart is sexy!”

    duh?

    • If only the whole “women thing smart is sexy” thing was true. I think that this might be partially true as women age, but it DEFINITELY doesn’t hold for teenagers (at least from the receiving end of female affection).

      • The problem is, most of the really smart guys I knew when I was in high school, were also complete arrogant assholes. I’m sure it was partially a defense mechanism. But it wasn’t their brains that turned me off, it was the “I’m so much smarter than everyone else so why should I waste my time with you morons?” When I got to college, I met smart guys (some AMAZINGLY smart guys) that were also nice and fun to be with. And I’m still with one of them ____ years later (yeah, like I’m telling how many years…puleese…)

      • As you age, your expectations might get more realistic, but your desires certainly don’t.

That was another gross generalisation for your deadpan friday.

  7. 50 minutes ago a power company, manager type, drove down our street.
He confirmed that the problem was a blown fuse … but that he didn’t have any with him.
    *SIGH*

All my power supplies are now beeping at me, warning me of impending doooooom.

  8. It’s just as well. You really don’t want to know what’s going on in the world anyway.

    Thankfully, there’s still rum.

    • Rum gives me a headache now. Why is that?
I had to switch to Vodka. Now I want to try all these amazing flavors from ThreeOlives: Purple, Root Beer, Pomegranate, Chocolate, and Triple Shot Espresso.
I’ve had the Bubble Gum flavor and yes, it is made of win.

      • Mrs. Usedhair (she would kill me if she knew I was calling her that) has the opposite problem. She cannot tolerate Vodka and it gives her massive headaches. But rum is just fine.

  9. Someone needs to tell the markets that leeching was found to be an ineffective way to treat problems.

Of course, telling that to some people will get you flayed.

  10. This morning my coworker broke a piece of his key off into the front door lock of our office. Now the front door is permanently locked. I asked my boss if he called a locksmith, and he replied “here I am.” He couldn’t fix it…

  11. I’m chewing gum, but the door is stilled locked. 😉

We got a call in to a locksmith, the first one we called doesn’t work on Fridays. #Murphy’s Law

  12. Well Pan, I’m off to see Arrietty – the latest Studio Ghibli film ( at least in the UK)

Now because I’m a hardcore anime fan, I’m seeing the subtitled version.

    Cough

The only show today that I could get to was the subtitled version…

  13. Howdy dear deadpanistas!
I took on a project at work that basically involved picking things up and putting them down. Which I’d a fancy way of saying I spent the last few weeks physically exhausted.

    Yay? B-)

  14. Why waste money on a professional when I can save a few bucks, have my entire staff milling about with no work getting done while I fail doing a hack job of it myself?

    Classic smallbiz boss.

  15. Well Arrietty was utterly charming, the plot was simple but at least straightforward (unlike the last Studio Ghibli film I saw), well worth checking out when you can.

  16. RE: Social Media citations pad – um, how are you supposed to use that? Am I supposed to stick the “citation” in an envelope and mail it to them? Or should I just scan it and email it?

    • Oh good grief –

“The bad — or at least, potentially bad — news is that, because of MacFarlane’s involvement, the series will air in prime time, and on Fox.
      <>
Now, maybe the fact that MacFarlane is involved — and Joss Whedon isn’t — will help. I certainly hope so.”

They’ll show the 2nd episode first and then cancel it before the final 2 eps of the season ever air.

  17. Also of interest –
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/06/business/workers-wages-chasing-corporate-profits-off-the-charts.html?ref=business

Seems corporations continue to see record profits, small businesses continue to struggle, and the individual continues to see less wages.

Considering that 70% of the US economy is based on consumer spending … perhaps it’s time to stop looking at what is “fair” and start looking at what gets money back into the hands of that 70% so that they can start consuming again.
Without a functioning economy there is no way to pay off the debt. 🙁

  18. Good for nothing lazy people. I sent out over a dozen e-mails before 8am. Here it is quarter to eleven and I’ve only got one reply back. You’d think it was a weekend or something. Lazy bums! 😉

    Morning Pan! :cheerful:

  19. We are being lazy around here. At least Ralph is in the shower. The rest of us are lazing about in our PJs. Looks like we’re gonna maybe hit the Museum of History today. We love free museum days!

  20. We hit lollpalooza Friday

Saw The Kills, OK Go and Ratatat and walked around a bit.

Danced our butts off we did! All 3 bands were awesome.

They have local artists exhibit their work there now. They started doing so last year I guess. We were in San Fran so we didn’t know.
We talked to the people on how we can get into the scene. Apparently there isn’t a huge demand of people wanting to show their art there which we thought was strange.

So lolla might be over-run with Hugh-n-Dre art attack next year 🙂

  21. Meme time!

What are the first 10 songs you can think of that make you happy? Here are mine:

  24. We watched the season finale of “Falling Skies” tonight. I don’t really know why, but this one just hasn’t done it for me. Same was true with the V reboot. They felt like they were trying too hard, but just not able to deliver.

Of course, Falling Skies seems to have done well enough that it will be back next Summer, so what do I know for television.

  25. “Yoda” – Weird Al
“Surfing With The Alien” – Joe Satriani
“Raindrops Keep Fallin On My Head” – BJ Thomas
    “Surfin’ Bird” – The Trashmen
“Across the Universe” – The Beatles
“Pump It Up” – Elvis Costello
“Scenario” – A Tribe Called Quest
“A Small Victory” – Faith No More
    “I’m the Man” – Anthrax
    “Overjoyed” – Stevie Wonder

  26. Well, since I’m signed up for another bout of 401k rapage today, coming up with songs that make me happy is probably a good idea this morning:

    In no particular order:

    Granuaile’s Dance – Celtic Woman
Hardware Store – Weird Al Yankovic
    Navigation – Ethereus
Your Song – Ewan McGregor from Moulin Rouge
I am the Bread of Life – John Michael Talbot
Vultan’s Theme (Attack of the Hawk Men) – Queen from Flash Gordon
    1812 Overture – Tchaikovsky
    Acroyali/Standing in Motion – Yanni
Two Hornpipes (Tortuga) – Hans Zimmer from PotC Dead Man’s Chest

Alright, I’ve got to roll for work, so nine will have to do for now. Still, having sampled these to get the names, I’m feeling better already.

    Enjoy your Monday, Deadpan.

  27. Ok, some novelty songs in the list, but they always make me happy when they come on the radio:

    Dayoh – Stan Freberg
Right Said Fred – Bernard Cribbins
Werner Von Braun – Tom Lehrer
Stuck in the Middle With You – Stealers Wheel
The Future’s so Bright I Got to Wear Shades – Timbuk3
    Turning Japanese – The Vapors
The Shit Song – Loudon Wainwright III
Too Much Stuff – Eric Bibb
    Liberal Backslider – Martyn Joseph
All around My Hat – Steeleye Span

  28. Ten songs for happiness? I’m not sure if my Mondazed mind is up for the task but, whatever…

    “Born” – Nevermore
    “Secret World” – Peter Gabriel
    “Blackbird” – The Beatles
“Safety Dance” – Men Without Hats
“Good Times Roll” – The Cars
“You Must Be Out Of Your Mind” – The Magnetic Fields
“I Wish You Were a Beer” – Cycle Sluts From Hell
“Good Girls Don’t” – The Knack
    “The Waiting” – Tom Petty
“Welcome to the Pit” – Bruce Dickinson

  29. vent

I’m sick and tired of the media calling out companies for using “sex sells” type advertising to “aim its advertising at men” because what? Women don’t like sex? We can’t appreciate sexiness? WTF? Seriously!? If an ad as a sexy woman who is strong and secure in her sexiness and smarts, why would I *NOT* appreciate it? So it’s ok for the Old Spice guy to be sexy and funny, but when a woman is in an ad in a towel being sexy and funny, it’s “aimed at men?” why isn’t the Old Spice guy “aimed at women”? I’m venting because I’m just annoyed with the whole thing.. Example:

“[The company I work for] sends a message to women that the technology consumer market (which continues to be heavily male skewed) is not intended for their consumption.” BS – this is utter BS!

    /vent

  30. “When Dr. King spoke of the great arc bending toward justice, he did not mean that we should wait for it to bend. He exhorted others to put their full weight behind it, and he gave his life speaking with a voice that cut through the blistering force of water cannons and the gnashing teeth of police dogs. He preached the gospel of nonviolence, but he knew that whether a bully hid behind a club or a poll tax, the only effective response was to face the bully down, and to make the bully show his true and repugnant face in public.”

Sorry, all I have is politics, atm. Blue ball in the corner pocket.

  31. ..and I shall say goodnight deadpan with a crap joke:

Dad buys a lie detector robot which slaps people when they lie.
He decides to test it at dinner. “Son, where were you today?”
The son says “at school dad.” Robot slaps the son!
“Ok, I watched a dvd at my friends house!”
    “What dvd?”
“Toy story.” Robot slaps the son again!
“Ok, it was a porno” cries the son.
“What! When I was your age I didn’t know what porn was” says the dad. Robot slaps the dad!
Mom laughs “HaHaHa! He’s certainly your son.” Robot slaps the mom

  32. The only thing that would make my head asplode more would be if I could actually go to one of the shows, but appreciate the layers:

They Might Be Giants on tour. This alone is a Yay.

Jonathan Coulton opening for TMBG. This brings us to the verge of head asplode…

Brandon Patton, my friend since grade school, playing bass for JoCo for all gigs opening for TMBG.

    POP!

      • Oh, hey look, there was more to the article after the picture. I see it’s season five they are finishing recording to air next Summer.

So, 2012 brings me the known end to both Chuck and Eureka. I’ll watch them both to the end, but I’m sure it will be frustrating as both are looking to be full of win for their final runs.

  33. In other news, I finally finished my first play through Dragon Age 2 last night. Overall, I enjoyed it, although I didn’t think the ending was nearly as epic as Origins. Honestly, after beating the head Templar, I thought there was still going to be another chapter.

I don’t know if I’ll give it a second run. I see there’s a DLC called Legacy now. Is that one worth playing through?

  34. Last night hubby and I played Battleship Galaxies. It was fun. I recommend this game fro two player fun. It is, however, not for the younger kids like original battleship. There is way too much to keep track of and do for a younger audience to grasp.

    • Well, do note that it says “2012.” Both series are being allowed to complete and wrap production, and air those episodes. Not your traditional FOX cancellation. “Everybody go home, maybe someday the unaired episodes will be on a DVD…”

  35. A simple two playing game you can play in your browser on IOS and android devices:

    http://www.ologame.com/

I enjoyed ‘Super 8’, ok it was basically ET with some ultra violence, but it was fun and even the teenybop romance wasn’t too bad.

  36. I was in Borders last night. It’s sad the chain is going away, but I got some great deals on graphic novels. I’m getting to catch up on Fables.

  37. So back in the day, there was a clone of Bank Panic on the Spectrum called West Bank.

The guy who programmed that game in the 80’s has written an emulator for IOS to play that particular game.

He sent me a promo code today, so I now have West Bank on my phone.

    …and I just think that’s cool.

    That is all.

  38. Smartphone question:

I’m thinking about upgrading to an HTC Incredible (Android OS, Verizon service). I have a choice between a 200 MB/month data plan and a 2 GB/month data plan. What I would like to know is this: Does either Verizon (via a website or some such system) or the Android OS itself offer you a way to check how much of your total data download limit you’ve used so far in a given billing period?

  39. Got 2 out of 3 goals accomplished tonight. To quote Meat Loaf: 2 out of 3 ain’t bad.
To quote Meat Loaf again: Let me sleep on it.
And one final Meat Loaf quote: I won’t do that.

    Goodnight :mullet:

  40. Well, I’m waiting for tech to call me. I really think all I need is for my password to be reset but, for some reason, this is a long drawn out process. With any luck, they will actually call and not try to send me an e-mail.

  41. I suppose I ought to post on FB too:

ALL THE PHONE NUMBERS of your contacts are now on facebook! go to the top right of the screen, click on ACCOUNT, click on EDIT FRIENDS, left side of screen and click CONTACTS. you will see all phone numbers from your phone (FB friends or not) are published that you have stored in your mobile phone. TO REMOVE, go to the right column, click on “this page.” please repost this on your status, so your friends can remove their numbers and thus prevent abuse if they do not want them published.

    • Ummm, as far as I’m aware it only publishes numbers that you’ve entered in your profile information, so if you haven’t entered any numbers then you don’t need to do anything.

    • I thought this was an interesting comment –
“Tyson’s never going to be Sagan. He doesn’t have the heart of a poet. He doesn’t make me feel what he feels. I seems like he’s trying to make science cool instead of beautiful and it’s not the same thing. ”

Not to knock Tyson … because clearly science needs a cool, cheerleader-esque advocate right now … but I think I’d have to agree with the characterization of Sagan’s science vs. Tyson’s.

    • A few nights ago we watched a show about all the stuff that we’ve learned about the universe thanks to Hubble. The show was from 2008 and the last few minutes talked about how Hubble would be brought down in a controlled re-entry into the Pacific Ocean. But, not to worry, because the new Webb telescope would be launched by then and would have powers far beyond Hubble.

Of course, I knew as I watched that a House committee had recommended killing the Webb telescope. It made me sad and angry all at the same time.

I’m getting a bit weepy as I type this.

    • No biggee. It’s not like I can only keep track of what day of the week it is by finding a new Deadpan on Thursday to keep me grounded.

Well, ok maybe it is…but I’m sure I can find a calendar to hang on the wall or something 🙂

  42. No problem, Jack!

CW: Falling Skies finale. Hilarious that you can see everyone’s breath because it’s so cold yet the hot chick is in a WB so you can see her tattoos.

I ordered my iPhone last night – kinda excited!

    • Soul Eater is a good series. It takes a little while to ramp up since there are quite a few important characters, but once it gets going, it really goes. Plus, I really enjoy the music from the series itself.

  43. I tortured LostRalph last night by making him sit through my favorite movie – The Other Sister… it’s corny, full of sappiness and everything… completely not like me.

    That LostRalph… he’s a trooper, I tell ya!

  44. My funny for the day.

Hubby had to go into work today. He was going to show some of the people the website for the literary convention I’m part of this weekend. His work system flagged the website as “pornography” and wouldn’t let him access it. Huh?

Now, I have last minute programming to do.

  45. On a side note, before I take off not to be heard until Tuesday, a number of us were talking yesterday, we’ve decided to each bring a bottle of our favourite scotch to the hospitality suite on Friday night. There’s going to be a taste test. I think I may be designated driver tomorrow. I am, however, bringing a bottle of 20 year old Glen Rothes. My favourite. Yum.

  46. In other news –
My beer kits for the fall have arrived!

Coming soon, I shall be making a batch of “Smashing Pumpkin Ale” (ready late October) and a batch of “Belgian Dubbel” (ready maybe in Nov.)

  47. RE: The NPR list

Xanth? Seriously? The first couple of books were cute when I was young, but the puns eventually became just tiring. I would have considered Bio of a Space Tyrant, but Xanth?

And The Sword of Truth series? The one that became so bad that, not only did I make it one of only two series that I refused to finish reading….[breath]….but that also forced me to humble myself before Deadpan and publicly retract and denounce my earlier recommendation? That one?

And, I’m sorry, I just finished “Restaurant at the End of the Universe” – Hitchiker’s was OK, but this series has not held up as well as I remembered. I can’t agree with it being number 2.

  48. I have to love that I have a job where one of the important decisions I have to make in my day is “should I or shouldn’t I use a hashtag with Zombies and also, is Zombies capitalized?”

  49. Yeah, Lejon, just commenting on the NPR list like a NERD!

Thanks again to Ed for waving me off the Sword of Truth series before I got too far in. Book 1 is really great.

  50. Captain America’s overseas numbers arent great…about 114 million… which was to be expected for a movie about an Über-American hero.

That being said it still kicked the hell out of Green Lantern’s 45mil worldwide. That’s awful.

    • Green Lantern pisses me off, it’s getting sequel and it did crap.

Shame on Johnny Foreigner for not watching the Captain America.

  51. Well I cant blame Johnny Foreigner for not wanting to, but I do think its a good film that does a good job not being all “Hey, look at ‘Merica!!”

You’ve heard the excuses for the Green Lantern sequel right?
Warner Bros says (to paraphrase) “Oh well you know that Batman Begins didnt do well domestically, yet it paved the way for the fantastic sequel. This movie will do the same. Green Lantern 2 will be on par with The Dark Knight”. Um…no.
