      • I agree that the first season was a bit difficult to get through. All told, I most enjoyed the freaky fringe thing of the week pattern that it fell into before they started getting all complicated and love-interesty. But it was a well executed series pretty much all the way through.

  1. Agree on Fringe, UH. We dug it.

Ed, I’m about mid-way through A Memory of Light and so far, great! Sly B is nearly done and a bit sad that she’s getting to the end.

  3. Crap joke for the day:

I was with this really fit bird and i was so turned on that i couldn’t help having a cheeky wank under the sheet, either she did not notice or was too polite to mention, but she just carried on cutting my hair…

    • I saw Carlin live, sometime back in the late 80’s early 90’s and it was one of the disappointing moments in my life.
It wasn’t that he was “bad” it was more that he was “sad and annoying”.

I had always thought of him as insightful and clever. Sarcastic, yes, but with a keen eye towards society’s inner workings. Apparently this opinion was based on the audio and video clips that had been carefully sorted out for play on Dr. Demento or HBO.

In person, he came across as just the cranky, very bitter old dude that lives at the end of your street and hates.

  4. Hey, Deadpan.

A week or two back, I asked the Deadpan community a question about special abilities in Mario Kart games. I mentioned that I was asking because I was writing a story. That story is now done, and I wanted to share it with the Deadpan community because I think many of you will appreciate it.

A bunch of us went to see The Avengers together at the 2012 Deadpan MMMMMeetup, and a bunch of us raved about how much we loved Wreck-It Ralph within the past couple of months. I finally got around to seeing the latter at the beginning of this month, and I was inspired to write a crossover story between them.

Story is here. (Warning: This story is set after the events of both movies, and spoils major plot points from the ending of Wreck-It Ralph.) It’s almost 5,000 words long, but I had an absolute blast writing it. Thanks for the help, friends.

    Deadpan is the geeking-out way.

    Good night, pie.

  5. Crap joke for the day:

Just watched the Lance Armstrong interview. He lied to us so much that I’m now starting to doubt whether he ever landed on the moon at all…

  6. RE: George Carlin. Did I ever mention that my dad went to school with him in the Bronx?

“Only a thousand times, Jack.” ?

(No, this is nothing like EssBee’s encounter with Linda Perry)

  7. I have to thank Lo for the wonderful hockey trophy I received. I must have drunk too much at the awards ceremony since I don’t recall that photo being taken. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Your useless information for today:

I have a new iPhone case, on the back is printed a photo of the Lighthouse near Tynemouth Priory.

    CW: The Following E1

  9. CD – Tyranena Sheep Shagger scotch Ale

I tell ya, the more I drink scotch ales the more I lament that I didn’t head down this path long ago.

  10. Luke Lapinski (local Phx sports radio guy for the Coyotes) just creamed his shorts while swooning over Steve Sullivan tonight and his hat trick.

    It was Brokeback epic.

    Go Coyotes

  11. Morning Pan

My kitty isn’t feeling well. At 17 years old, every time she starts looking a little down I wonder if sh’s reaching her end. Luckily she always seems to bounce back. Will have to call the vet today and see if they can do anything for her

  12. Comment on Jack’s prediction for media.

I think it would be more accurate to say that podcasts have proven successful as way to communicate with an established audience. They fail, however, as a financially lucrative “stand-alone” venture.

    Reality TV.
Interestingly enough, I see a parallel between what the public liked about sitcoms and what they like about “reality” TV. The general public likes to watch people behaving badly.
When the writers strike came along we discovered that the general public was just as interested in watching no name, no talent people behave badly as they were watching Bill Cosby’s kids or those “Friends” behaving badly.
There is a MUCH higher profit margin in the bad behavior of the talentless bucketheads though, so that is what has been pushed onto the airwaves.

I think the perception of what is “popular” has been skewed by what the networks have made available. They offer a much higher percentage of your “Honies Boo Boo” then your “Mad Mens” so naturally, there are more viewers of that kind of material.

I suspect that if they stopped with the reality shows all together and went back to an all “The Walking Dead” and “Big Bang Theory” programming there would be some wailing and gnashing of teeth for about two weeks and then no one would care. They’d still be tuning in to what ever was on.

Of course, networks voluntarily raising their production costs would be an economically silly thing to do.

  13. I find it rather sad I’m playing Jetpack Joyride on my Vita when I have Jetset Radio and Gravity Rush sitting on the memory card waiting to be played.

  14. I’ve heard stories from friends that found and searched abandoned missile sites before, and I’ve always wanted to do the same. Not many floating around Central Florida. Just have to go on the bucket list for now.

  15. Crap joke for the day:

I’ve been down on my luck recently so when I saw an old lady drop her pension money outside the Post Office, I was faced with a real dilemma.

Do I spend it on drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both.

    • I call bullshit….

“Colorado and Mississippi have tried (and intend to try again) to pass personhood laws that would grant full constitutional rights to a fertilized egg.” No… the STATE did not try, a group of like 50 people tried to put it on the ballot and it failed to make it. I assume they will keep trying.. but its n the STATE. Its a wack job group.

Careful, Guardia…. this story wreaks of sloppy sloppy reporting.

  16. Anyone hear the new Soundgarden album yet? Chris has certainly lost a step but the album is MUCH more than I expected.

Like a certain Mangan, its got its shit together.

      • They haven’t gone down the furry road yet. But there have only been two episodes.

Hosted by Curtis Armstrong and Robert Carradine from Revenge of the Nerds fame. I was worried it would simply make fun of nerds, but it is being handled pretty well so far.

  17. Watched “Source Code” this morning. Interesting concept and I think better executed than Looper was, even though, strictly speaking, they weren’t the same thing.

  18. Crap joke for the day:

A teacher asks her class, “If there are 5 birds sitting on a fence and
you shoot one of them, how many will be left?” She calls on little
    Johnny.
“None, they all fly away with the first gunshot.”
The teacher replies, “The correct answer is 4, but I like your
    thinking.”

Then Little Johnny says, “I have a question for YOU. There are three
women sitting on a bench having ice cream. One is delicately licking
the sides of the triple scoop of ice cream. The second is gobbling
down the top and sucking the cone. The third is biting off the top of
the ice cream. Which one is married?”
The teacher, blushing a great deal, replies, “Well I suppose the one
that’s gobbled down the top and sucked the cone.”
“The correct answer is the one with the wedding ring on… but I like
    your thinking.”

  19. Hello, Pan.

I just got off the phone with Apple tech support. Some not-very-nice person somehow hijacked my Apple ID account and changed the primary email address and password so I couldn’t get into it. I am in the process of recovering it, though. I am only able to do so because I set up security questions, which I was able to answer over the phone and which I remembered the answers to, and because I had set up a rescue email account. I have a followup call scheduled for tomorrow morning. It’s been a very stressful evening, but the stressful part is over, now that I just spent half an hour cleaning out that rescue email account and making sure that it works. (It does.)

Off to relax with a movie now.

    Good night, Pan.

  20. CW: Banshee E3

iTunes streams video fine from my netbook to the the Raspberry Pi running Xbian, even though I can’t play the videos back on the netbook.

  21. Evening, Pan.

My life has been a little crazy since I moved back at the end of July/beginning of August. Now that it’s settled down, I decided to reconnect with the Deadpan by going on an extended trip through the Deadpan archives. Deadpan #191 ends with a Matt Mango song called “You Need.” It’s been foggy all day around here, and I just drove home, through really thick fog, after having taken my first tai chi class ever, while listening to “You Need.” It was, and is, a really peaceful, lovely night here. Soon, I will have tea and a brownie.

    Ahhhhh. Life is good. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Amy, Tai Chi is wonderful. Remind me, and I’ll post links to the online instructional vids I found. I assume you’re starting with 24-form?

Also: “You Need” had been recorded a few months before my son was born, and I distinctly remember putting the fresh-from-the-studio recording of that on when I first brought him home from the hospital. It was his first song at home. Thanks for listening ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Jack: My instructor said the form she was teaching only had 19 movements. *shrug* She advertised the class as “Tai Chi/Yoga blend,” so I think she’s doing her own thing with it, but we only did tai chi moves today. I enjoyed it.

You mentioned that story on-pod. You’re welcome! ๐Ÿ™‚

        Good night, Pan.

    • My thought process after clicking on that youtube link:
Uh oh, One of the artists has a “z” at the end of his name and the title looks a little sketchy.
Hmmm. This is looking more like it’s going to be rap.
      oh, shit. React. React.
, Too late. abort! abort! close the page, dammit.
Ahhh, back to Zeppelin on iTunes.
