    • Crazy boy–
Everybody knows the rock leans over the town
Everybody knows that it won’t tumble to the ground
We’ve more important studies than your fantasies and fears
You know that rock’s been perched up there for a hundred thousand years

  1. Morning Pan

Stupid smoke detector decided the battery was running low at 1am last night. Waking up at such an ungodly hour to the chirping of the smoke detector was not fun

    • I have to decide if I want to leave Arizona at one or seven pm. While seven does have it’s pluses, the big minus is I wont land until eleven, which means I won’t be in bed til well past midnight. This Bunny just doesn’t operate that well at that time. Since I’ll be driving myself home from the airport, I suppose it will have to be the earlier flight. :ermm:

      • We’re actually thinking of a holiday in the UK at some point in the future. I know it sounds silly but hubby and I can’t holiday for more that a day because of our neurotic 16 year old cat.

Once we don’t have any pet concerns we plan to do a lot of travelling.

        – this is in no way saying I’m waiting for my cat to die. I loves my Reeny and will be devastated when she passes on.

    Earbuddies are happening now!

HiFi Palooza. Send your recordings in to Jack on either the book, movie, or both.

Why have the comments dropped? Don’t you love Jack? Was it something to do with the change from Thursday to Tuesday? Join the silliness that is the comment board today!

  3. I have an e-mail in to hubby to see which flight works better with his schedule. Usually he drops me off in the morning before work and picks me up after work when I get home. While I have booked the Tuesday off and can sleep in the next day, he can’t so I may have to use the park and fly and drive myself home. I can’t take a taxi, we live far enough from the airport that it’s actually cheaper to use the Park and Fly for four days than to get a cab. We’ll see what hubby says.

  4. For some of the newbies (looks at Desert Pixie), I know you probably don’t care but I thought I should clarify, while I may be a huge flirt, most Deadpanites know I all but worship my hubby and would never, never, ever do anything to jeopardize that. I’m all talk, no action.

  5. While I know it helps with the comment count, that is not why I’m really yappy on the board today. They’re having computer troubles at work so I haven’t been able to get any of my reports for the day. Therefore I’m sitting at my desk doing nothing. Bad for getting work out of the way, good for wasting time on the Deadpan.

  6. Jack, for me the move to Tuesday has nothing to do with my lack of participation lately. Life just got a bit hairy, but things are looking more . . . shaved? . . . now so I’ll be back as much as I can.

    Bunny, no action?

  7. So they were making a point on a podcast I listen to that Star Wars is a type of road trip movie. Not a movie you watch while taking a road trip, but a movie about a road trip (space trip). They travel a long distance and have various misadventures along the way. Thoughts?

  8. BTW, finished “High Fidelity” (the book) last night. I quite enjoyed it. But what does the main character have against Pink Floyd! Grrrrrrrr. 🙂

          • Hubby is having the opposite problem. While his computer is no way as high end as mine, it’s still too high for when ME1 came out. He had to tell the computer to run in XP mode just to get it to run. Even so, it still crashes on a regular basis. However, it seems to be fine for Oblivion which he just started too. Go figure

  9. There, not only did I eat lunch but even stated sending out the Feb newsletter for WWC. I feel like I’ve accomplished stuff.

    Now…where’s my Bowflex?

  10. While I admit it’s been a fabulous winter over all, and I have no reason to complain, still I was not happy to hear the weatherman say HIGHS of -20 by the weekend

  11. BTW, I didn’t mean to suggest that against gay marriage = dumb. I get that there’re other thoughts on the issue than mine.

    Wrong, not dumb . . .

  12. While I admit penguins are cool I just don’t see the point of waiting two hours in line to see the new exhibit at the Calgary Zoo. They’ll still be there next week, or next year. Do you really have to see them “right now”? I have better ways to spend two hours than standing in line for that. *shakes head at the silliness of people*

  13. *Waves at the pan group then hangs her head in shame.* I have been missing a long time again. I’ve missed you all. I really do need a smart phone I think 😛

  14. In case my reply to Bunny is lost in the masses from earlier today, here is ‘comment vomit’ & then back to sleep I go.

    1. I rather enjoy the Star Wars Radio Drama for road trips & even quiet nights at home.
    2. I’m thrilled my Ear Buddies selection was sent & has yet to be met w/ distain.
    3. KOOZA by Cirque du Soleil is coming to Phoenix this summer; which meams YOU should come to Phoenix this summer, too. And, No, it will not be open by the time the Mmmmmmeetup gets here. Boo.
    4. I think mostly everyone on here is a giant flirt. The man-love between Jack, Lo & Rhettro is beautiful. I tear up everytime they exchange a ‘sack joke. Keep the flirts coming. Im quiet at first– its just until I get to know each of you a little better. 🙂
    5. Speaking of Sack Exchange…

Ok I need more zzzzz’s before work. G’Night Deadpan.

    • “I think mostly everyone on here is a giant flirt.”

      Except for me.
      I’m a slut.
Well, I WOULD be a slut but they have yet to let me join. Damn them and their elitist standards!

  15. Holy crap, Alan Rickman is 66. He’ll always be Hans Gruber to me.

Skype has happened during the past MMMmmmeetups. We’ll make sure it’s on for the recording session, at least!

When have I flirted with Lo and Rhett?? My heart belongs to ditto.

  16. It’s because of Jack that I have multiple versions of Psycho Killer on my shuffle. My daughter looks at me strange whenever it comes on. Whenever I complain about her music, she says “You’ve got a song called Psycho Killer! And my music is bad?”

  17. CD: Alaskan Prrseverance Ale (Russian Stout). Jeeeeeeesus lord… this’ll be it for me for the night. Dunno if they used the recipe for their Baltic Porter for this one but god bless em for it.

  18. Steve goddamn Downie. Thats gonna be it too isnt it? 3 points out of a goddamn playoff spot and Steve goddamn Downie is the answer?

    *hic*

Hoooo maybe the drink has outlasted its welcome…. *hic*

  19. Hey Jack. You know why your comments dropped? That’s cuz I wasn’t here. That’s right. I’m an instigator. 😉

    5 minutes? What? C’mon! C’MON!

  20. Good morning Pannites! Good morning mush. Starting the day with Jack’s earworm and Jonathan Coulton’s “Baby’s Got Back”. Going to be a musical brain day, yay! Happy ashy day to those who observe.

  21. Here’s a first:

the drag queen, meth-withdrawing, suicidal patient called the ‘Bisexual, Lonely for Love Sex Hotline’ from his hospital room.

Who else has a good ‘first’ they want to share

  22. I found out today that Jack in talk with the Avalanche about trading Van for Steve Downie. In the works of the Deadpan general manager Jack Mangan, “The Deadpan believes that Steve Downie will add grit and skill to our lineup offensively.” And trust me when I say that the Deadpan hasn’t been near as offensive as it has been in the past. Of course we could hold out for a first round draft pick like Azzmuncher69 from the Youtube Commenters.

  23. Oh lunch is so far away (in 45 minutes). Today’s menu item: Teriyaki chicken.

  24. Well, my friends, at last it can be revealed – Jen and I returned from signing the closing documents to sell our old house. I have at last reduced by vast land holdings from two houses back to one.

    And there was much rejoicing!

  25. I saw something that is surreal but I think you’d have to be Canadian to find it so. It was for Tim Horton’s (donut shop) and they were carefully explaining their “tool up to win” contest. Everybody in Canada knows what Roll up the Rim season is.

  26. Under strange: last night I got two texts, about an hour apart from some guy named Justin, claiming to be my cousin. I didn’t reply. I don’t have a cousin Justin… At least, not that I’m aware of

  27. I think I’m upset with my goddess. Yesterday I sent her my flight itenary as well as some other info. She never replied back. I guess she doesnt love me any more 🙁 maybe I should be miffed with Ralph for taking her attention away. After all, it’s all about me you know 😉

    • I wrote this huge, long reply this morning and then saved the draft as I was going to further edit it, then it no longer made sense when I looked at it later. *sigh*

      I’m made of fail…

I was also um, researching local hotels for someone etc.. 😉

  28. My bath was wonderful. Although it was marred by having to come out to answer the phone. This time, strangest Justin called instead of texted. He was looking for Ryan. While its possible he really meant me as I’ve been called that many times, I still didn’t know who he was so I simply said, “there’s no Ryan here.

    I wonder if I’ve developed a stalker… *not serious*

  29. Though, probably one of the best ideas I’ve heard lately is putting Clinton back in for a third term and Gingrich back in as House Speaker. At least we weren’t running broke back then.

  30. Avs kill the Kings. I dont know whats worse… seeing this kind of game where everything clicks and yearning for consistency; or not being able to complete a pass/play defense and lose 4-1. Both are cringe worthy in their own special way.

  31. Okay…. even though Jack will probably read this. 😛

It looks like Deadpan’s six year podiversary is in 6 weeks. Is something planned that I missed?

  32. ditto is going to need a good helmet.

Cyn, we usually don’t make a big deal about anniversaries, but you’re more than welcome to contribute something to mark the date.

6 years..! Who says I have commitment issues?

  33. Reading Jack’s link from yesterday about Star Wars brought a thought back to my mind.

Us techheads are too have a rosier view of culture than we think.

Star Wars is still not that popular. Home computers are not that ubiquitous.

2 of my current coworkers are younger than me and do not own a computer. I doubt either of them could even guess how many Star Wars movies have been made.

Just some food for thought. I’ll get off my molehill now.

    • You have a winning way, so keep it
Your future, your future, your future…

You are an angel heading for a land of sunshine
And fortune is smiling upon you!

  34. I have a question. Besides the Arizonians and two others (you know who you are), who’s thinking of doing the mmmmmeetup in early May? Not that it’s really any of my concern, I’m just being nosy and getting a feel on how big the crowd will be this year.

  35. Greetings from sunny, happy, shiny places Pan! Reviews from the soon-to-be-happening wine walk shall possibly be forthcoming.

*Disclaimer: I am not responsible for typing errors diring said wine walk*

    • For those not on facebook here are my thoughts on the beer.

The smoked malt comes through clearly in the aroma, but not overpowering. The hops nicely accent the smoke in the aroma with spiciness, with a hint of sweet malt in the background. Drinking it the hops come forward in the actual flavor of the beer, and the smoke lingering in the back. The hops are not strong, but still very noticeable most beer drinkers will not be put off by the bitterness, though those who have a problem with any bitterness will probably not like this beer. It’s dry finish is enhanced by the effervescent carbonation making it very refreshing. In appearance it’s a cloudy dark yellow, with a thin white head made of small bubbles.

It most reminds me of a smoky saison, or perhaps a strong american wheat since I’m not getting much yeast character. I’m assuming, as I’m not familiar with the unique Polish hops or yeast it’s hard to discern how much each are affecting the character of the beer.

I’d like to drink this with some good smoked barbecue, or perhaps the obvious sausage. I think the smokiness will enhance any smoke character in the meat, and the hoppiness, along with the effervescent, dry mouth feel, will cut through the grease and any sweetness to help cleanse the palate. Although you may want to steer away from spicy food due to the above average alcohol content.

All in all a truly good and delicious beer that I highly recommend. I look forward to finishing the bottle, and drinking it again in the future. I will have to keep my eye out for other brewers attempts at this style as I think it has alot of interesting character.

  36. Mindless hockey talk about ex-Avs:

Wojtek Wolski is now a Panther, traded for Defenseman Mike Vernace (I dont know him either) AND a 3rd round pick. The Rangers barely played Wolski and in him debut tonite for Florida, Wolski played over 15 minutes and had a goal on 4 shots. Mayhaps both these teams got a good deal. And mayhaps I dont care about either team.

  37. My poor hubby has a dilemma. The principal of the high school is going on a sabbatical (don’t ask me what that means, I haven’t the foggiest). The superintendent of the schools is hinting very strongly that he would like John to apply for the position. While hubby does want a principal position, he doesn’t want it to be of the high school. (he’s more elementary or middle school). The problem is, there is no guarantee a position will open up in one of the other schools in the near future. So his dilemma is, does he take this position even though it’s only sort of what he wants, or does he wait for another school to have the opening.

Oh yeah, side note: There are only seven schools in his system. Also, He’s only 5’4. Part of the reason he doesn’t want to be principal of a high schools is, it’s hard to be intimidating when all the students are taller than you 😉

    • I thought it was the Vice Principal’s job to be the disciplinarian of the school. See if the Super will let him pick a VP that he would trust to give him the backup he needs.

      • John is currently VP of a middle school, he and the principal sort of hand off on discipline, depending upon what’s needed. He won’t be able to pick his VP as that position is already filled. They are not going to fire the current VP just because the principal is leaving.

  38. If sabbaticals work the same for high schools as they do for universities, they are a semester long “break” in responsibility that is meant to allow te person to travel to a different school and collaborate with other people to broaden their abilities.

To make a long story short (too late), the position at the high school sounds like a temporary one. He could deal with the high school students for a semester and demonstrate to the superintendent that he is capable of handling that type of position do that he is a prime candidate when a spot opens up at the lower grade levels.

    • Apparently the principal is going for his PHD. That’s what he’s taking a sabbatical for. Even a temporary principalship is still a step up. When hubby first started doing VP, he did a temporary position for someone on maternity leave. It then rolled over into something permanent as, coincidentally, another VP position opened up when his term was up. With only seven schools in the system, there is no guarantee something else will open up any time soon.

Anyway, he does have lots of time to decide. The new position wouldn’t start until September.

  39. Just watched “In Time” on Amazon this evening. With all the bagging it got in the reviews, I was expecting disappointment.

I wasn’t. While certainly not a perfect movie, we thought it had a lot going for it.

  40. Alright, I’m probably going to finish up “A Princess of Mars”, the first John Carter book by Edgar Rice Burroughs that I presume will loosely translate into the film in a few weeks.

I’m struggling a bit deciding what to listen to next. I finished the last Acacia book, which provided a satisfying conclusion to the arc. I also just listened to “Predictably Irrational”. While I found some of the conclusions flawed, it was still a thought provoking book.

Now, I’m just not feeling a strong tug in any particular direction. What have you other good Deadpanites been reading/listening to that you’d recommend?

  41. I have this stupid exercise ball. We work out in the basement which is cooler than the rest of the house. I blow up my ball and, once the air inside cools, it goes soft. The hand pump that came with the ball looks like I’m making rude gestures whenever I use it and it tires me out. I think I may have to find a foot pump or something.

  42. Hi Pan.
Best Picture Showcase on Saturday was awesome. I will do it again.
My head hurts so bad today and I am so filled with blah for the work today.

I hope you all have a good day 🙂
