  1. My dog woke me up before 5AM to go outside this morning. When I walked out into my backyard I noticed that everything was illuminated in moon light making me glance back at the moon. It was very bright. Then I noticed a planet close to the moon that I assumed was Venus, but it’s dull beight color made me think it might be Jupiter. I figured I might go get my $30 telescope and look. Sure enough, it was Jupiter. The ambient light from the moon made seeing and detail difficult. I was able to make out a few cloud bands, but I did see four tiny lights which were moons of Jupiter. The photo at this link is pretty close to what I observed.

So that makes 5 moons I saw in the sky this morning. 🙂

  2. Also, great content from everyone. I especially liked the content from Dan S. done in the style of Hitchhikers. I was also expecting to hear the Still Alive listener reaction, I guess that will be next week.

    • He may have some valid points, but I think he’s completely wrong. I suspect he thinks the same thing, but is being deliberately confrontational just to make people think.

  3. I agree 100% that nothing sounds unique and non-derivative anymore – – nothing has for about 15 years. That doesn’t mean that it’s no longer possible to produce compelling and powerful music.

    • I think there are a few grains of truth to the article. One turn off for me in popular music is total homogenation of styles to appeal to the largest demographic possible. But to me this is a profit driven agenda, not because artist cannot produce compelling music.

      • I think perhaps music isn’t dead … it’s undead.

For some decades it seemed to be going through phases where it would collapse on itself and becomes a stagnate pool of goop for a few years. Then suddenly something unexpectedly “new” and “different” would rise from the slime. Sometimes it has been a wonderful thing, often it is a something that should have immediately received a headshot to send it back to the ooze (yes, I AM looking at you “Rap”).

I would like to think we are just currently in an overly extended period of decomposition and decay and that the primordial music slime is just waiting for that rare spark to once again create that new “something” worth getting excited about.

Meanwhile … CP – David Bowie “Major Tom”

  4. Saw this in a Pintly e-mail –

“We’ve also been busy planning for our trip to the Great American Beer Festival at the end of the month. For those of you making the trip to Denver in a few weeks, be sure to stop by booth #101 and say hello! We’ll be giving away a few prizes, and we’ve got something special in the works with Sam Adams, too! Stay tuned for more details. ”

Sounds like some of the Deadpan could be in for a fun time.

  5. No matter how beautiful or technically creative or cleverly-constructed the song might be – – nothing has sounded “new” or revolutionary to me since the Cobain thing.

    Although “Friday” is close.

  6. The original The Killing is neat so far. The Danish sounds totally foreign, and there’s something very endearing about a woman addicted to nicotene gum.

It’s still chilly here. Green chili is boiling away on the stove and I’m reading A Dance with Dragons while Sly B crochets a chihuahua.

  7. Ok, hubby wins. I told him about my morning and he replied with this:

“Cool! I’ve been busy too! Parent in to see me, our bells are not working, a teacher who got her finger caught in car door . . .”

I’d rather have my kind of productive than his.

  8. Two things:

So Ed says that Portal is free again on Steam, right now. Is this game doable for someone with a free time deficit? After all of the Deadpan Portal contributions over the years, I feel like I ought to at least have some idea what it’s about.

  9. The NPR radio drama is super tits. I still have the box sets somewhere around here, but theyre cassettes so they dont get played unfortunately. They were awesome for driving back and forth to Ohio with. Cause I had to do that more than I cared to. Theyre extremely well done. Lo Pan’s highest approval!

  10. Today’s movie: Metal Tornado

The DVR write up: Lou Diamond Phillips stars in this thriller about a science experiment that goes awry and produces devastating magnetic tornado.

Wait! This isn’t the movie from IMDB. Quick search on IMDB only comes up with the one I linked to earlier. Hmmm. This will be interesting what this really is… Or maybe not.

  11. Work stuff.

Did get to see the film adaption of ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ damned impressive, although I haven’t read the book.

Got the grungy 70’s look down pat.

    • Glad to know you enjoyed them, unfortunately 2011 has sucked for my brwewhouse production. Hopefully things will get better soon, and I can send you some fresh stuff :).

  12. Can would be a good name for name for washing powder.

Want your whites to dazzle? Then use biologically inert VAM (with Ingredient X) gets your whites whiter than white.

    Umm yeah, morning Pan.

  13. Hubby just informed me he’s leaving me on Wednesday for three days. I knew it was coming up but somehow I thought his admin retreat was not for another week or so. Oh well.

  14. You kids behave this week. I’m off to get schooled. Convinced my company to pay for a training class that will keep me busy for most of the week.

    Be Deadpan to each other.

  15. The Qwikster email came from a person with a name very similar to Rhett’s and it starts “I messed up. I owe you an explanation.”

I thought, it’s about time, Rhett.

  16. We went with the $7.99 streaming option for Netflix but decided on Sunday (before Rhett’s email) that we were going to cancel altogether. We just don’t use it enough.

  17. Yeah theres no way I could cancel Netflix streaming (until a competitor does it better). Its our TV, as we dont get cable or satellite and there’s no way Ill go back to either. Plus we all use it WAY too much. Its just goddamn annoying that they price hike then pull all this bullshit.

  18. Fox found a wooly bear caterpillar yesterday evening, but I couldn’t remember the folk wisdom about the middle band and how that supposedly relates to the weather…

  19. Hey, had pretty good luck posting from the phone here on that last posting…

Sometimes it takes literally several minutes to get through typing something that long…

  20. Just listening to them talk about Netflix on CNBC and the “Bonehead decision” (their words) by the CEO to raise prices … and then this week decision to split the business.

All of the commentators said the guy should be given his walking papers. THAT based not on how it will effect the subscriber but what it did to the companies stock price. It’s down nearly 60% in just a few short weeks and none of them said they would touch it even at that discount, except for maybe day trading.
    *golf clap*
Netflix has now assured itself a place in the pages of Business School textbooks for generations to come.

  21. I forget all of whom in Deadpan land are in California.

    Amy? J.R.?

I don’t know what parts either.

I’ll be in Anaheim for a VERY brief minute, the 1st week of October. I’m mostly booked – but I’ll have my own car and ya know… whatever whatever… if we can make something happen.

  22. Since I will most likely miss any responses posted here – I’m terrible at scrollback, please contact me on Facebook or email me at twinklergirl at that place where all the email goes dot com.

  23. I hadn’t noticed the “other” Jack Mangans arguing who was supposed to be the real Jack Mangan farther down the Deadpan Facebook page. That seems to fit perfectly into the Deadpan mythos, for some reason.

  24. The Netflix & Qwikster (aside from the weird choice to split & rename) has been and will continue to be the perfect choice for us for now. I barely have time to watch streaming, so I get the DVD’s, and my wife and kids watch the stream all the time, but their DVD’s sit around a long time without being watched. There is no part of their service we don’t like, and they would have to double or triple their price before I’d consider dropping them.

I figure behind the scenes, there has been conflict in negotiating stream because of DVD deals or DVD deals because of stream licensing. This means the negotiations can be separate.

    • Just a few million more posts like this and they might regain some share value.

Halfway through the first month of their new pricing program and Netflix had already lost a million customers. While the service clearly isn’t “going away” any time soon, it’s just not what investors want to see.

  25. J0e, this is a cut-paste of what went down today on FB:

  26. I am currently watching the SyFy classic, Killer Mountain. Won’t be dining a PBP as I’ll have to stop half way through. I’m having lunch with a friend (leave me alone for three days hubby and I’ll make my own plans)

  27. In addition to Jack, there are three other Fan page members that are named Jack Mangan.

I’m starting to wish for a redo of the Emenem “Slim Shady” song, but with “Jack Mangan.”

  28. Someone had been spreading rumors that we’re just about a bunch of insides jokes.

Pappa Zmed is not amused and will likely be getting Zmedeval on some one.

    Indside jokes? bah!

  29. Ed, I finally finished Dance w/ Dragons and have to disagree with your review. I loved it and curse GRRM repeatedly and harshly now, as does Sly B.

  30. And now I’m re-reading the Wheel of Time series before the final installment comes out in November. I’m well into The Great Hunt and am really enjoying getting back into this giant bitch of a world. I waver between loving this and Song of Ice and Fire more.

Also, my Ed, the last Acacia book comes out in November.

  31. On a serious note, I can’t remember a time DP hasn’t welcomed new blood to the comments section, so I will be blowing raspberries any any accusations of being a clique.

Oh and I’m tempted to get the iCade (which Thinkgeek also sells).

    • However, I can see how someone could be intimidated by our obvious closeness. Also, with the fact a first comment is moderated, sometimes we don’t see a newbie. I can see how, if you don’t know how the system works, you may take that as being ignored.

      Just playing devil’s advocate

    • *Drive by from overworked hell*

Like “War of the Worlds” and “The Musical” or
      “Fried” and “pickles”

I’m sure the end product of “spearmint gum” and “pomegranate liquor” may indeed be the shiznit, but just thinking about the combo in your head is one of those things that makes you go “ugh”

  32. Ooh, new Acacia in November. I’ve got plenty of credits, so I’ll be ready.

I’m glad you enjoyed Dance with Dragons. Hopefully it won’t be another six years until the next one.

Currently about half way through “Rise of Endymion”, the last of the Hyperion Cantos. Strongly enjoyed the two Hyperion books. These Endymion books are not nearly as strong.

I look forward to the completion of “The Wheel of Time”. Is the next book the last one, or are there two? I just might have to start queing that series from the beginning as well if we’re coming to to the last book on that series as well.

Check – looks like the next one in 2012 is the closer. Dunno if I can get through them ball before then.

  33. CD – last minute packing.

I’ve decided to go wander about the world for a bit.
About 2 weeks to be exact.
So, unless I wander across internet access (and a device to access it) I guess I will be quite quiet.

  34. It’s morning. I decided not to make a pot of coffee for the whole one cup I have in the morning. We don’t have any instant, so having Hot Chocolate in stead. I feel all warm and cuddly now.

  35. The city has marked up the road in front of my house. I wonder if that means there will be a big hole there soon. Every few years the city seems to have the need to dig a giant hole in the road in front of my house and make things very inconvenient.

  36. I’m in pain. My head feels like it wants to expand beyond its borders and I can’t turn my neck more than 15 degrees without pain…

One would think I slept funny.

Or with my head on a cat.

  37. I’m trying to convince LostRalph that he should be here for PodCampAZ. Everyone give him a nudge in that general direction.

    You should all come too.

    It’ll be a partay.

  38. This bunny’s not happy. The city told her to take her car out of the driveway and park down the street because I won’t be able to get out of my driveway later in the day and for the foreseeable future.

  39. Damn you, insomnia!

Well, I guess I’ll head into the office. I’ll not be getting caught up any time soon, so might as well grab an extra couple of hours.

  40. God damn it WP! If I want to do a duplicate comment I should Damn well be able to! Who are you to say I can’t say the same thing twice? If I want to 😆 more than once a week you should bloody well let me.

    *grumble, grumble*

  41. “Holy heatwave Batman! The city is melting in the intense heat from the penguins magnifying glass!”

“Don’t worry I packed my BatAir Conditioner into my utility belt, it will cool things down quickly.”

  42. I dated a Canuck a few years ago who’d always insist that her parents bring her Kraft Dinner from their trips back to the motherland, saying that it’s far superior up there. Bunny?

And EssBee’s first link was very tame. 🙂

    And btw, I’m home.

        • Oh so youre that guy now. Well done.

Dr. Who has become a piece of shit and I have a wealth of colleagues, friends, and reviews to back my hatred up. No one but a scant percentage of people even know what the hell Hyperdrive is. The fact is that Hyperdrive is a harmless 12 episode program that is easily enjoyed then forgotten. Its meaningless. Dr. Who is a sci-fi icon that the current writers have decided to destroy with poor story arcs and even poorer choices of what characters to deem important. These last two season have sullied the good name of Who to the point that I’ve never met so many people prepared to give up on a franchise outside of after The Phantom Menace hit. So no… my opinion of my Who suck isn’t “suspect”. It’s firmly rooted.

          Now go finish your tea.

          • But I will add that what Dr Who was actually iconic for was men in rubber suits and dodgy scenery (and lets not forget the quarries).

Although I was never that impressed with the Russell T Davies penned episodes of the ‘new’ Dr Who (some of the best ones during his tenure were by other writers including Moffat)and hate his take on the Cybermen.

They have been some misfires with, flawed that it is, I’ve still enjoyed the last couple of seasons Dr Who.

          • Well… nothing can reach the low of Torchwood’s Cybergirl Vs. Pterodactyl, but point taken.

Oh I dunno, but the end of the original run I’ll agree with you that it did indeed become more about the crap effects than the story. But IMO the writers still tried to write worthy and engrossing sci-fi stories til the end. Plus I agree that while I do love the Davies… he’s not the second coming.

  43. I’m trying to get a laptop for my mom. She needs a webcam to skype with her son . . . ahem . . . and enough memory and speed to use with her Husqvarna embroidery machine/quilter. Any recommendations? She’s convinced she needs a $999 HP . . .

    SIGH . . .

    • I don’t know about the sewing machine but skyping doesnt require that much power. Regardless, i wouldn’t go HP. They are phasing out their pc part of their business and you don’t want to get something you may not be able to get service on at a later date

  44. The TV commercial just said to “Facebook us”. I’ve heard friend being use as a verb for facebbok but this is the first time I’ve heard facebbok used as a verb. The English language is rolling over in its grave

  45. My day today: Gorgeous weather. Church. Live jazz on an outdoor patio with family and friends. Completing and turning in a homework assignment ahead of deadline and without the technical difficulties of last week’s assignment. Macaroni Grill for dinner. Getting Fiverr stuff out of the way. Fun, engaging, well-paying tasks all day long on my favorite crowdsourced work site.

Today has been made of win.

    Good night, Pan.

  46. Morning all. My foreseen time of tribulation has begun. My already non-access from work is going to be compounded by a good deal of overtime for the next few months. I shall keep us as best I can.

  47. Best wishes, Ed.

Good weekend here, though rather busy.

I watched Person Of Interest, despite not liking the two main actors. It was a “meh” until about half-way through. Interesting concept. And, Mr. Deadpan started to grow on me. I think it is worth trying a few more episodes to see where it goes from here.

  48. I witnessed a horrible thing while at breakfast yesterday with my mom and Sly B. Two obviously gay guys came in to the restaurant and the waitresses made a HUGE deal about it, even going to get the cook to come look at them like zoo animals. I was horrified!

Should I write a review online and mention it? Write the owner a letter? It’s a local dive. I have no complaints about the food, though it wasn’t great and we’ll probably choose another place in the future, but I was/still am stunned by the behavior of the people who worked there.

  49. There are plenty of funny ways to mock this restaurant, but it sounds like it’s really (likely) just one clueless waitress. I might say to call the restaurant manager and talk about the incident.
I’d also just give the facts in a Yelp review.

  50. Had a nice walk. Only saw squirrels today. Will have to start thinking of another plan. I’m not sure what I’m going to to replace the walk once the cold weather hits. My elliptical just isn’t the same.

  51. One thing about a harp. Like a guitar, when dealing with new strings, you’re constantly tuning the thing until the strings stretch and settle into place. Unlike a guitar, I have 26 strings I’m constantly tuning. I’ll be glad when the strings finally find their happy place. 😎

    • After owning guitars for 24 years I only discovered this year that you can “pre-stretch” your strings. After stringing the guitar you give a light tug and hold for a moment. Then you tune normally. I’m convinced that this would shorten the life of the strings so I just tune as needed.

  52. CP: Home For A Rest — Spirit Of The West

“You’ll have to excuse me, I’m not at my best
I’ve been gone for a week
I’ve been drunk since I left
    And these so-called vacations
    Will soon be my death
I’m so sick from the drink
I need home for a rest
    Take me home….”

    • It’s a bit weird (especially the music), with a very basic plot stretched out with long silences from the Ryan Gosling character.

A film that made me go Hmmmm

  53. I watched Terra Nova yesterday. So far it seems like a dumbed down Avatar. The concept is good, the visuals are really good, the acting is a little shaky but I imagine that will improve over time. As pilots go it seems that it suffered at the hands of a financial committee. First negative is they revealed to much background with short summations, which killed the sense of mystery. There’s the obligatory angst ridden teen. The family seems to exist for the sole purpose of putting the members in danger so we feel for the main character of the father. I can tell there are some “24” writters presence in here. I’ll continue to watch, but if it continues to have a “hackish” feel, I’ll be moving on.

    • We DVR’d it also. I hated Avatar and I don’t have high hopes for this one. So far of the new, we’ve enjoyed:

      – The New Girl, though it’s obviously a Liz Lemon knock-off
      – Person of Interest
      – Prime Suspect
      – Ringer (though Sly B pointed out last night that Anna Torv does the twin thing much better than SMG)

  54. I totally was going to do something and then I forgot what it was I was going to do.

I wish Sprouts started their sales on Tuesday instead of Wednesday.

What was I going to do? grrr

  55. I haven’t heard a single song yet from Opeth’s “Heritage” album, but it seems to be having a polorizing effect on the reviews. Did they become “The Mars Volta”?

  56. One a pysch podcast I listen to, there was mention of a study where students were asked “If $100 could save a life, how many lives would you save?”

Lets just say, the results didn’t show humanity in a good light.
