  1. Morning Pan!

We ended up not going to the game last night. Both hubby and I were in bed by 8:00 drugged out of our gourds on cold medicine. We both thought it would be better that way, especially since I had to work this morning.

  2. Vanamonde :Finding a quiet pub and (I hope I’m using the correct technical term) get slowly pissed.
    It’s a plan.

I get slowly pissed alot, usually for no reason…… heh

    CP: JACK MANGAN’S :pan: #150!

  3. There, listened to the whole show on my phone, worked pretty well, but wish I had remembered the headphone adaptor, or that HTC had included a mini-phone jack input somewhere on the damn phone…

  4. 2009 is absolutely middle finger worthy. Redundant or not. I’m moving to France and shall say nothing but “sacrebleu” in my best Peter Steele voice.

  5. Pretty much feel the same way TEB, except for getting to know someone who generated a lot of stress for me. Still glad it happened though.

  6. The Noughties have been very contradictory. On the one hand, we remarried, built our house and have had two lovely children. On the other hand, we divorced first, have had steadily declining income since 05 or so, and we have spiraling debt and expenses. Every time we feel like something is getting stable, the car or the dishwasher or something else poops all over us.

But I do my best to stay positive and enjoy life. Life costs money, but it beats the alternative handily…

  7. I really am happy for everyone that had a year/decade that didn’t suck. I really am. This year and much of this decade I won’t miss since it has royally sucked for me. But good things did happen and I won’t dwell on the negative. I just needed to get it out of my system.

    Fuck you 2009!

Have you noticed that historically, the 0Xs of pretty much every century have been very tumultuous?

  8. And the cat just punctured my ankle. Add that to puncturing my back yesterday and I’m feeling a bit like a pin cushion. Plus, the allergies don’t help.

  9. Good Morning, :pan: , and happy New Year’s Eve!

TEB: If you’re not seeing a differnce in the food at an Irish Pub and everywhere else, you aren’t going to a pub. (Or maybe everywhere you go are Irish pubs…)

Ditto and JØ: Oh pointy birds, oh pointy pointy, annoint my head, annoint annointy.

2009 sucked in ways that we won’t fully understand for at least 10 years… Piss Off 2009, Good Riddance.

  10. ditto :I really am happy for everyone that had a year/decade that didn’t suck. I really am. This year and much of this decade I won’t miss since it has royally sucked for me. But good things did happen and I won’t dwell on the negative. I just needed to get it out of my system.

ditto I find rum helps. Gallons and gallons of sweet delicious rummy goodness. You can put it in coke, tea, coffee, water, cake, beef stew, :mush: , toothpaste, barbasol, eggs, apples…..

Fuck I havent seen LA Story for years upon years

  12. Bunny, as long as the table still has room to roll a d20, you should be fine.

I echo everyone’s sentiments about 2009, life, the universe, and everything. I never begrudge good people for finding themselves in happy situations, and I do (try to) appreciate the good things in my life.

2009 definitely had some fun times too, not the least of which was the MMMmmmeetup in September.

  13. See thats odd cause youd think theyd get permissions from teh artists to release a soundtrack. maybe they figured it wouldnt be a big seller. tis odd tho

  14. @Vanamonde
Actually, Orinoco Flow failed to make an appearance in L.A. Story.

  15. oohhhh, look what the mailman brought! A SS gift all the way from the UK!

My January reading list is complete.

CR: Terra Insegura by Edward Willett
but next I’ll read Frozen in Time by Ali Sparks
followed by The Men Who Star at Goats by Jon Ronson.

    Books make me tingle.

    Thanks Van!!

  16. To chime in a bit late on LA Story, ever since I saw that I have been meaning to write Steve Martin and tell him how much I enjoyed it. I have never written a letter to a celebrity but I always meant to write him.
… and Sam Phillips, to thank her for “Martini and Bikinis”
… and Weird Al Yankovic for using his genius to create brilliant parody instead of just more music.

…and Jaymee Ong for being Jaymee Ong. Delicious.

  18. The best laid plans of mice and men.

Got chucked out of the pub due to lack of customers, but fist they ran out if Bailey’s then Malibu.

Currently drinking a dead woman’s booze (a friend collects junks from the estates of the deceased)

  19. 2009 definitely had it’s ups and downs for me. I finished the schooling portion of my PhD and have only to write the dissertation, I got a great job with a great company so I can get paid while writing the dissertation.

On the other hand, the job I took was at an extremely low rate for what a PhD should be making because the company would allow me to stay local and I really, really wanted to stay in upstate NY. Then the company lost a major contract and forced me to move to Florida. We like Florida well enough, but we didn’t really want to move and the cost has just about killed us financially. What’s more, my wife has been out of work almost all of 2009 with a back problem and once we moved she could no longer collect disability in NY or FL. So everything we gained from the high paying job was lost back to her total shut-down of income. On top of everything else, our son has been stationed in various locations all over the middle east and was not able to make it home for Christmas this year.

  20. I think 2010 will be your and your wife’s year, Usedhair. You too, ditto! Jack! Lo Pan!

Y’all have fun out there tonight, but please take a cab if your out and partying.

    xox

  21. Dammit, I hate it when Itunes does a :ftb: impersonation. Not only do I miss the new show, I forget to flip over to the new comment page. Here I was wondering why it was such a slow day for comments.

Bah! Well, that’s 2009 for ya.

  22. You know, those “now” pictures for the celebrities seem to be deliberately picked to find them in either the worst possible combination of outfits, poses, and facial expressions.

That said, some of them have definitely not held up too well.

  23. swoooon! Ive wanted to Be Jacks love prowess for 4 years!!! I finally got my wish!!!

wait.. that didn’t come out right, or maybe it did….

Well 2009, fuck you very much!
Tonight I’m not looking back and bitching about how horrible this last year was. My plan is to look forward to how fucking awesome 2010 will be.

Fancy dinner then some love prowessing of our own is the plan for the night 😉

    so, happy new year pan!!!

    MWA!!!!!!

oh crap I used old skool smileys.. eh whatev. I’m totally old skool bitches!

  24. I haven’t finished my dissertation yet, so no Dr. title yet.

I’m bringing in the new year with one each of the following:
Left Hand Brewing Company – Milk Stout
Left Hand Brewing Company – Juju Ginger
He’brew The Chosen Beer – Genesis Ale
    Stone – Levitation Ale
    Dogfish Head – Chicory Stout

  25. Take good care, TEB and Mr. TEB!

Happy New Year! The smoker is fired up, and we’re awaiting delivery of our new recliner this morning (found a great sale 2 days ago, and our old one inherited from my gramps was truly crumbling).

    So far, 2010 is :metal:

  26. Happy New Year :pan: !!!

I would have posted earlier, but this is the first time I’ve had a computer on since last night. I was busy carousing and carrying on with my friends at our traditional New Year’s eve haunt.

For the record, I had the following to drink:
    1 Cowboy Mojito
1 correctly louched Absenthe (I can officially call myself a writer now)
1 sip of cheap rum (right at midnight, it was the only thing available)

Hope your 2009 left all traces behind.

Here’s to the future of everything and :panties:

  27. Happy New Year everyone! I drank a few colas with Captain Morgan in them. Not bad. But I managed to score three bottles of Boulevard’s Quaddriple Ale, 6th Glass on Wednesday. Awesome stuff, but I’m not going to drink any of it until I make it back to Phoenix. My kids are snow sleding outside today. Probably their only chance. LOL Did you notice that today’s date looks like binary?

    010110

  28. Nice control method on Vector Tanks, just a pity the guy stop developing the game, would have liked to see different types of tanks and something equivalent to BZ’s missile.

  29. I wonder if I’m becoming to cynical for these bloody things, no tears watching the Dr Who Xmas special part 2.

Just wondering at the waste of having Timothy Dalton and hardly using him and moving the Master even further away from Roger Delgado’s suave supervillian to a start raving loony.

Ah well, 2010 will see what Moffat can do with an actor that looks like she should be starring in a school play.

  30. Morning :panties: !

Two more days off, and then I head to Dallas to work at my new home office for a week.

So far, 2010 has been pretty great, except for my mom’s health.

    Have a good Saturday!

  31. Hello, World.

It’s 40°F here this morning, but we’ve been promising the kids a trip to the rec center with it’s indoor pool and water slide. So far, 2010 is off to a pretty good start.

  32. Thinking about taking the kids to see Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.

Saw Brian Bradley at the Comedy Spot last night and as usual, he was hilarious. My face still hurts from laughing. I wish I could share him with everyone.

  33. JB – finally listening to this episode (stupid iTunes refuses to find the podcast … STILL)

    “They’ll need a crane, they’ll need a crane.
To take the house he built for her apart.
To make it rain, it’s gonna take,
A metal ball hung from a chain.”

  34. I’ve long suspected that Sony taking away its support for Yellow Dog Linux on the PS3 (and the announced discontinuation of the Cell processor) was concern over liability. Hard to find a better, easier farm to crack various types of crypto. All the government interest in the Cell just reinforces this in my mind.

  35. I don’t know how many football (or at least “Bowl Game”) fans hang out here at the Deadpan … but can any of you remember a more lackluster Bowl season this one? I can’t recall there ever being such a collection of un-impressive teams and games that I couldn’t care less about.
IMHO – They have “tweaked” the Bowl game process until they have now broken it.

  36. I don’t really follow college ball, but I definitely preferred when the Bowl games all had silly names, as opposed to silly corporate names. Do they still play the Doritos Bowl? The Enzyte Bowl? The Chef Boyardee Beefaroni bowl?

  37. Anyway. I’ve been semi-AWOL of late. I hope New Year’s has been good to everyone. I had a busy but good gluttonous 2 days, consuming in excess. Some of the happy surprises of NYE: Kris and Thomas and Cj and Danthol all showed up.

In lieu of the timestamp, I recommend occasional time posts.

    3:17pm AZ time.

OK, I’m off again for a few. Happy 01-02-2010

  38. Ok, maybe we could do a vote on whether to put new posts at the top of the webpage? would help us that access the DP on our phones/iPod Touches/Android phones..

  39. My god, that’s cold!

Today is our last day of vacation. I’m actually ready to get back to work, but wish I wasn’t going to Dallas tomorrow.

I’d be fine with new posts at the top of the page.

  40. Morning Pan

I have no voice today, therefor I gave decided I’m going to lay on the couch all day today and veg. I don’t think I’m even going to turn on my computer at all today (the touch doesn’t count)

  41. If therels not an easy way to put some kind of jump to the bottom button, I’m also in favor of new comments at the top. Though, we’d really need the comment box at the top to go with it.

  42. Figuring out what happened made my brain hurt a little.

Then I ate a homemade tamale and all was right with the world.

My work week starts now so … Hope to talk to you all again someday soon.

  43. If so, that would be great, but, at least having the comment button there at the top saves a lot of scrolling. Definitely a nice start to the new Deadpan Year.

  44. For the record today I kicked butt and sold stuff to the tune of double my daily quota.

Anyone around to give my a high five for being so :metal: ?

(zoom me back to the top, Scotty, so I can check!)

  45. I was looking at the paper cut link at like 1am this morning thinking “stop looking at the pretty paper and go to bed.” So I did.

Up and at em! I’m taking my daughter for her 6 year well exam this morning. Poor dear has to have blood drawn. She’s cool with it though, but I can’t let her eat so all 3 of us are going to eat afterward – just to be fair. Leaving in about 10 minutes, doctor, then breakfast, then take her to school. It’s her first late. She’s never even been absent. My kid rocks!

The little dude still has one more week off.

  46. Also… because my hubby is awesomesauce, he starts his new job today!

He’s working at the same place as me. He just left for orientation so he can learn how to sell stuff and kick butt!

    :silly:

  47. lmfao. I’m behind on my tech magazine reading, but I just stumbled on this gem of a sentence:
“Modern memory chips, when powered down, will retain their contents for seconds even at room temperature, and for minutes if they are cooled to the temperatures of a Canadian winter.”

So, Canada *is* bad for security. 😉

  48. Happy New Year, Pan!

On New Year’s Eve, we had a yummy casserole with black-eyed peas, rice, ham, tomatoes, and onions in it. I didn’t drink anything, except some Martinelli’s Sparkling Cider. We went to our city’s old downtown, where they were dropping a decoration that looked like a giant bunch of grapes instead of a ball at 9:00 PM and midnight. We went to the 9:00 grape drop, then came home and baked cookies.

Jack: Cool! So glad you had a good New Year’s. 🙂

    Cj: *high five!*

Today’s to-do list: Finish fixing up resume (bleah), try to get Audacity working on my computer again (it stopped working last night for some inexplicable reason), work on Questors #9 if I can get it working again, work on Cisco labs from last semester.

  49. Lejon (from Chandler) :
    <Driveby>
Just to chime in on the “Why on earth give James Cameron $500BILLION to make a movie?” question:
    http://www.sliceofscifi.com/2010/01/04/avatar-tops-one-billion-worldwide/
I believe the answer equates to “scoreboard”
Now to get back to catching up after the holiday
    </Driveby>

Star Wars: Episode 1 nearly reached a billion (930 million)for a fraction of what was spent on Avatar. So I still disagree that it was necessary to give ol Jimmy C that much.
Both movies are beautiful to look at but a storytellers nightmare. Both movies prove the world am a dumb dumb place.

  50. Ok, who thought it would be funny to give me a paper cut on my nose? The tip of my nose is now bleeding and hurts like hell!

I don’t know if this says more about the the strangeness me or of life in general.

  51. @Lo Pan
The amount of money spent to make the film is irrelevant. Movie companies will spend ridiculous sums of money to eek out any profit. Of course, the higher the profit margin the better, which is why they weren’t worried about Cameron. He’s already doubled the investment, and if the box office numbers are any indication, Avatar is going to keep making bank for a while. People keep going to see it, in much the same way they kept going to see Titanic.

In protest, naturally, I’m planning to watch it on Netflix.

  52. Lejon (from Chandler) :
    @Lo Pan
People keep going to see it, in much the same way they kept going to see Titanic.

Like I said…people am dumb for the spoonfed fodder.
Ok I generalize and I dont begrudge those who enjoyed. Just makes me scratch my head is all; and worry about what, and how much, is next.

    *hacks up lung*

  53. Avatar is all about the giant-screen 3D, which is a hell of a lot of fun. If you’ve ever done the 3-D experiences at Universal and Disney, this is a lot like those, except at your local theater. I walked out and said, “Well, I guess that’s the end of the 2-D action flick.”
If only Cameron could have made a story as engaging and immersive as that of Titanic (I know some disagree, but I really connected with Rose and Jack’s experience), then this could have been one of the great cinematic experiences of all time.

    God, we are nerds. :drevil:

  54. Jack Mangan :
If only Cameron could have made a story as engaging and immersive as that of Titanic (I know some disagree, but I really connected with Rose and Jack’s experience), then this could have been one of the great cinematic experiences of all time.

I agree. The biggest problem with the movie is that it is completely predictable. It is fun to watch and it is great entertainment, but I don’t think anyone will argue it was a great movie.

    God, we are nerds.

    And that’s a problem? 😉

  55. This nerd was made for walkin…..

You know movies like Shoot em Up or Crank are just as predictable yet 1000 times more fun than Gravitartar. Maybe its all about creativity beyond looks. Dunno, cant put my finger on it (as Ween would say).

  56. DJ Bunny :
    *looks up*

Lo Pan :You know movies like Shoot em Up or Crank are just as predictable yet 1000 times more fun than Gravitartar.

    Crank? Really?
    *burying nose back in spreadsheets*

Hey for what it was it was fandamntastic. Crank 2 even bettah…

  57. It’s not about better or worse. It’s about cash and carry. People are paying to see the film. Paying to get the 3-D experience. A half a billion was nothing compared to guaranteed returns on that investment.

When, in all the time you can remember, has the studio system given a crap about a good story, when awesome effects will pack theatres and make LOTS and LOTS of money?

  58. See, ditto, the best thing ever is that I somehow read your two posts together and I read “What a fun first day to be back in my cage”. Zahhah!

  59. Well, this seems to be working pretty well on my Pre.

Though, the comment box seems to be slapping the crap out of my phone.

  60. I think I’m going to have to lodge a complaint with the Canadian embassy – Houston is looking at a high of 34°F this Friday. The rest of you guys must really be hosed if it’s going to get that cold this far south.

  61. Ed from Texas :I think I’m going to have to lodge a complaint with the Canadian embassy – Houston is looking at a high of 34°F this Friday. The rest of you guys must really be hosed if it’s going to get that cold this far south.

Lo Pan decrees high 30’s. Sooooo not much betta

  62. Amy:

I’m pleasantly surprised to find American cities using grapes as a new years symbol. In Spain (and many other countries) it is quite the important symbol for the new year. Were there, by chance, 12 grapes in the bunch that dropped?

    From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Year%27s_Eve

Spanish New Year’s Eve (Nochevieja or Fin de Año in Spanish, Cap d’Any in Catalan, Cabo d’Anyo in Aragonese) … It is traditional to eat twelve grapes, one on each chime of the clock. This tradition has its origins in 1909, when grape growers in Alicante thought of it as a way to cut down on the large production surplus they had had that year. Nowadays, the tradition is followed by almost every Spaniard, and the twelve grapes have become synonymous with the New Year.

  63. Ed from Texas :
I think I’m going to have to lodge a complaint with the Canadian embassy – Houston is looking at a high of 34°F this Friday. The rest of you guys must really be hosed if it’s going to get that cold this far south.

    LOL!!!!! 😀

This afternoon, I not only set up an interview with an employment agency for tomorrow, but while I was at said agency, I ran into and reconnected with an old friend who remembered me from junior high school! Small world!

    [/diarytweet]

  64. @Usedhair

Oh, yeah! I knew about that tradition, but I didn’t connect it with our grape drop until you mentioned it. And no, it definitely looked like there were more than 12 grapes in the bunch. Our city only used a bunch of grapes because there is a fairly large area of vineyards and wineries on one side of town.

  65. Vanamonde :
All this DUNNing reminds of the beginning of ‘The Longest Day’.

I looked on IMDB to see what ‘The Longest Day’ was. Then I scrolled down the actors list. I only recognize Sean Connery and Red Buttons. Why does DUNNing remind you of TLD?

  66. It’s the short bit of music played after Rommel surveys the beaches NS.

For the whippersnappers among you, think the music Ford tries to teach the young Vogon guard in the TV series of Hitchhikers.

  67. January 5th – Take 2

I also helped a customer last night who, when I picked up the phone started the conversation with, “I need to be escalated. I was on hold for a supervisor, but disconnected.”

I checked the notes and sure enough, he was holding for a supervisor to take the call.

    Yeah. I resolved it.

That’s me – the girl in the training department who has only been with the company for 5 weeks.

    Yep. No escalation needed.

  68. Also, good morning :pan:

I’m wearing a lovely necklace which also doubles as a 4 year old boy.

It’s stunning and kind of suffocating, but it’s really cute and appears to love me

  69. The junk guys called. They are slogging their way through the snow and should be here within the hour. Taking away my old TV and a bunch of other junk that won’t fit into my car. It will be nice to be junkless again.

  70. Vanamonde :
…and I find it hard to believe NS, that you’ve never heard of John Wayne.

    ?

*reLoads IMDB* *scrolls* *clicks “more”* *scrolls* *scrolls*

Oh! I didn’t see him. He’s listed last. Would have thought he’d rank higher even with just a cameo. Oh well, shows what I know about it.

    Also…

  71. That is a good article, ditto. Even if both of the local professional hockey franchises are mismanaged to extinction, there still is and will continue to be a pretty dedicated amateur community in AZ.
Of course, letting a couple of spoiled millionaires move the team and hurt the local hockey culture would still be a damn shame, but – – there’s very little that we individual fans can do about it. The world is run and ruined by spoiled millionaires. That won’t change in our lifetimes.

  72. Really, really good creative day today. Got stuff organized for next scrapbook, and completed a few pages. Also did a bunch of audio editing. All but 2 lines have been edited into Questors #9. Besides those two lines, the only things that remain to be done are the end credits and the music… but there will be a LOT of music. Five songs in total, and so far I’ve found three of them. I’m still happy with the progress I’ve made, though.

    Night, :pan: .

  73. Someone does need to direct a Starblazers movie before Michael Bay gets his hands on it.

Goodnight, shum. FYI: tomorrow is looking Unshowish.

(Maybe that will even work with your Questors timetable, Amy!)

  74. @Cj

No. I was leaving for work after having spent all morning “at work” and now I’m home and have to finish this morning’s work. So… I’m feeling a little over-worked.

The word was taunting me so I released it upon all of you.

  75. morning :pan:
had a phone interview yesterday that went really well. It seams like a good company and my commute would go from 60 miles a day to 60 miles a week. Have a great day all.

  76. Morning Pan!

It’s 6:10 in the bloody morning. I’ve already made the commute through the arctic tundra to the downtown office.

now snug and warm with a hot chocolate on my desk ready to study spreadsheets.

Hoping to be out of here soon and back in my own home.

  77. The kids wanted to know why I was getting them out of bed while it was “still nighttime”.

Oh the joys of explaining how the sun works during winter.

    Is this thing on?

And by “this thing” I mean my brain.

    The answer is no.

  78. Well, I’ve had my adventure for today.

The train I was coming home on broke down. Spent 20 minutes waiting for the mechanic to come. He fixed it to the point it could be taken to the nearest station where we were all told to get off.. The train left, presumably to the yard for a proper repair, and we had to wait for another to come and take us to our desired destinations.

Good thing I had my touch with me or boredom would have set in really quick :alien:

  79. ditto :
Via Topless Robot, this has to be the best twist on the horror genre that I’ve seen in a long time. “Tucker & Dale vs Evil”.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nx0GaB2EHUs&feature=player_embedded

Youre always one step ahead! I just watched that trailer and damn does it look fine! Im so there.

Speaking of not so creative movies:
JAMES CAMERON’S AVATAR = DISNEY’S POCAHONTAS is very very amusing.

  80. So tonight’s game on Facebook, was for the woman to put the colour of the bra their were wearing in their status update (just the colour).

White and Black dominated, but Turquoise was there.

  81. OH HAPPINESS!

I am so super-ly excited to see that all my lovely DP friends are still posting hundreds of comments on this lovely DP podcast!

Jack, J0e, ditto, Ed, JohnBoze, Andrea, Jeremy oh you lovely lovely things (i’m sorry if i missed anyone — i can’t read all 400 comments quickly enough)

Oh i hope you all remember me… I don’t care if you remember me… Thank you THANK YOU deadpan for still being here and alive!

  82. (I should clarify — I’m very upset over Natalie’s passing. I found out about it through a friend and didn’t really know anything about it. It made me miss Tee, and my other ‘podcast’ friends so I came here hoping hoping hoping everyone was still around. I’m very glad everyone is, I’ve missed you, and I hope to stay. I’m sure this is all very weird if you don’t remember me… but… I’ve missed you oh so much, Deadpan…)

  83. Welcome back, Sarah from Charleston! Your return is welcome 🙂 although of course, we all wish it could have been under better circumstances. Check out the Xmas Show – that one was pretty good.

I think I’m going to get the Unshow thread started. Probably goes without saying that this is going to be a silent Unshow week.
