  1. Saw it today, basically a rerun of Return of the Jedi.

I know action films tend to have dumb plots but boy this one needs to wear a white hat.

I am left wondering if the Emperor had a gameboy and Tetris to while away the long years since ROJ.

Other than 1 scene of the Emperor saying “strike me down” and a different(?) Endor moon, I don’t think it’s a ROTJ remake at all. Judging by the fleet of ultra-powerful Star Destroyers and the hordes of worshippers, it looks like he had plenty to do to keep busy.

I only have nitpicks. To me, this is the best thing JJ has done in his career. A consequence of its excellence is revealing just what a mess TFA was.

    • You forgot about the redemption of Kylo, which smacked of the redemption of Darth Vader at the end of ROTJ.

He died as well, just like Darth.

    • So, the emperor lures the rebel forces into an attack that they can’t win with the threat of a planet killing weapon and tells the hero that the only way to stop it is to turn to the dark side (to strike him down even) only to have his assistant turn on him (and redeem himself in the end). Let’s be honest. It’s pretty much ROJ with a few odd twists. That seems to be the JJ way. It was the same thing with Force Awakens. I did still like it very much. The only thing that bothers me is that we didn’t get the JJ rehashing of Empire Strikes Back. That would have been incredible.

      • I do think JJ’s version of an Empire rehash would have been much more interesting that Rian Johnson’s rehash of Empire that we ended up with.

  3. My favorite part of the movie was getting to see the Kylo Ren that I wanted from Force Awakens. In FA he was just a temper tantrum asshole. In ROS he was finally cold, calculating, and really, really good at what he does. Even before his redemption, he was a more well balanced sith than he was before.

  4. Least favorite part of the movie is the spy declaring “I’m the spy!” and then coming out with “I don’t care if you win, I just need Kylo Ren to Loose”. Worst dialogue of the whole movie. Sounds like it was written by a 10 year old.

Rose did get short shrift in this one, but she was also never a terribly important character.

Me, I thought it was Star Wars done right. It felt new and fresh, and jam-packed with appropriate nods. (Eg: John Williams and Wedge). I can’t wait to see it again to reexperience the highs and to catch the stuff I missed.

I don’t even know what to say to this. It would have been great for representation if one of the 3 leads had been an Asian woman, sure. In the context of the story, this minor character (regardless of ethnicity and gender) wouldn’t have had much to do in this movie.* I guess she could have just been hanging around on the Millenium Falcon in the background, like that tentacle face guy. . .? I think that would have been worse.
This trilogy was always really about Rey, Finn, Kylo, and Poe, with the characters from the origianl trilogy hanging around.

*I do wonder if that new former stormtrooper character ended up alongside Finn in scenes originally intended for Rose in earlier drafts?

    • I can’t read this until my Medium limit resets (not paying for goddamn Medium).

Most of the reviews I have read seem like they were mostly-written before the movie came out, based on trailers and JJ Abrams’s involvement, with the blanks filled in afterwards, like Mad Libs (no pun intended). I’m open to critical analysis of the story, but in most of these cases, the hipsters at the keyboards seemed more interested in proving how smart they are, rather than equipping readers with the info they need to decide about seeing the film.

Repeating myself a little: for me, it was a thrill ride that felt entirely like its own thing. The more I think about it, the more I appreciate how well it works. Yes it’s full of nods to the old movies, but a final chapter kinda needs those – – and I loved almost every one of them, including Lando, Wedge, the voices of the past, etc. (didn’t need yet another holochess game) As a lifelong Star Wars fan, for me, it was a joyful, emotional, satisfying finale. Both of the big Chewbacca moments were heartrending (even if they copped out on the first one).

    • Oh hey, I guess my Medium access reset, because that Tab was still open, and I could read the article!

I’m not going to go through it and debunk everything. . . The author is entitled to their view, and people are entitled to agree, but their thesis is flat-out wrong. The only assertion I really agreed with was their knock on Star Trek: Into Darkness.

    One little examination:
The balance of the Force is apparently the most important thing. Before we knew that the most powerful Sith evar was out there planning an even more deadly assault, it made sense for Luke, as the most powerful Force-user in existence to abandon the power, in order to ensure the balance. TLJ was a brilliant vision of Luke becoming the ultimate Jedi: a non-violent guru who doesn’t meddle in galactic affairs and doesn’t disturb the balance, but can still do cool shit. Yes, he was leaving his Kylo mess behind, but he eventually recognized that Rey was his counterbalance – – and he did take an action to deal with that mess, at the critical moment.

Luke’s “I was wrong” comment in RoS isn’t a dismissal of TLJ, because we now know there’s been a Palpatine out there, and Luke needs to be his counterbalance. His exile on planet Porg WAS wrong, with the Emperor out there.

  7. To put Rose’s cut down role in perspective:

Rose’s sister Paige, who died in the first scene of THE LAST JEDI, had more screen time than Rose does in THE RISE OF SKYWALKER.

    • Fuck yes.

JJ Abrams: Let’s just ignore that Rose and FIn kissed and instead have a fucking insipid out of charfacted kiss between Rey and Kylo instead! Especially because this makes Kylo the Sleeping Beauty prince hero! YAH!

      FUCK this film

  8. Member that one time that Rey received Luke’s saber from Maz but no one decided how to explain how it came off of Bespin into MAz’s hand’s?

  9. Member that one time at the end of Last Jedi where those in the Falcon were all that was left of the Resistance and no one else was coming and then all of a sudden there was a whole base full to start Rise of Skywalker?

  10. From Twitter:

I still don’t know why Rey was on Tatooine.

Luke spent 1/3 of his life trying to escape Tatooine and only came back under duress.

Leia spent one day on there and in that day she was imprisoned by a giant slug.

So why the HELL would they want to be symbolically buried there?

  11. Long time listener, infrequent poster due to my employer blocking the website. How y’all doin?

Last Jedi. I lost it when a planet suddenly appeared for the final standoff. Seemed like lazy writing. But I really did enjoy the last Skywalker. Especially the nostalgia of death star, x wing, etc.. really pulled my 10 year old self beside me

    • Hey Soulier! Good to see you!

By ” But I really did enjoy the last Skywalker” – – did you mean The Last Jedi? Or Rise of Skywalker?
