  1. In case you missed the crap joke:

A man died and went to The Judgment, they told him , “Before you meet with God, I should tell you — we’ve looked over your life, and to be honest you really didn’t do anything particularly good or bad. We’re not really sure what to do with you. Can you tell us anything you did that can help us make a decision?”The newly arrived soul thought for a moment and replied, “Yeah, once I was driving along and came upon a person who was being harassed by a group of thugs. So I pulled over, got out a bat, and went up to the leader of the thugs. He was a big, muscular guy with a ring pierced through his lip. Well, I tore the ring out of his lip, and told him he and his gang had better stop bothering this guy or they would have to deal with me!”..“Wow that’s impressive, “When did this happen?”..“About three minutes ago,” came the reply.

  2. Yep, Supreme Overlord. LOL

The tournament follows immediately after, I may watch a game but I don’t want to spend the whole day there. I’ve got some Star Wars RPG planning to do after all.

  3. For those following the issuehttp://www.bustle.com/articles/79730-ruth-bader-ginsburg-shuts-down-gay-marriage-opponents-with-these-3-perfect-rebuttals?utm_source=bustle&utm_medium=Facebook&utm_campaign=fbpost

  4. Walked past the Supreme Court today and there were a ton of antigay protesters. And by a ton I mean one lonely white lady and her sign

    • It seems some people on Facebook have reported this sight as having abusive content..someone doesn’t like being told they look older than they are ..

  5. Hey everyone!

I would love to organize everyone’s itinerary for coming to and leaving PHX and everyone’s accomodations. Please also state if you need airport help! Im going to post this on FB, as well.

If you’d prefer, you can email me and Jack instead. But I want to be sure we are able to help w transportation to/from Sky Harbor and start to plan some events (already doing some researching).

    Thanks
    Pixie

  6. If there is anything I can bring to the Mmmmeeeetup from Florida that people can’t get elsewhere, let me know and I will see what I can do. There are definitely some good breweries here and I can bring a selection of beer with me.

  7. Movie is over.

It wasn’t that bad, as far as these type often,Obie’s go. But then, I like most things Stephen McHattieisin. He seems to make a mediocre movie just a little bit better

  8. Gloss paint is just bloody evil as it dries.

We can land men on the moon but not invent a gloss paint that doesn’t leave your eyes watering and your tongue feeling coated in gunk.

  9. I used meat puppet on Facebook today, judging from the questions there are still people who haven’t read Neuromancer.

  10. Oh, here you guys are!

Well, I guess I’ll do some catchup posting –

    Itninerary
Flying in Friday at 1:15pm – Southwest 618
Staying with the cool kids at Country Inn & Suites
Flying home Sunday night at 7:20pm – Southwest 401

I wasn’t planning to get a vehicle, but I’m seeing some pretty good deals for that weekend, so I may splurge a bit.

    • I can’t say I speak from direct experience, but it is my understanding there are some substantial City of Phoenix taxes on people renting cars at the airport. I’m unsure if that is still true or not. I’d at least look at seeing if there are better rental deals in Scottsdale and/or Tempe.

  11. We just watched the movie, Push.

I love that flic. It’s a fun and quirky, cool ride.

I think Mr. Mangan is still reeling abit though.

  12. Wisdom from Twitter:

@god: Convicted wife-beater @FloydMayweather makes $180 million for hugging @MannyPacquiao for 12 rounds. See Floyd, violence isn’t the answer.

  13. Thank you all.

Tonight I shall be heading off to Orkney, which I’ve been told has rather patchy mobile reception, so will probably be quiet on here till next Saturday.

  14. Alright, I went ahead and got a car. Surprising good deal on a full size, so I can shuttle folks as needed. As much as I appreciate bumming rides off of others, I’m a commuter and just find myself more comfortable when I’ve got my own transport.

Since Roaming Asshat and I should be arriving within a few minutes of each other, I can get him and take him to his place. Anyone else arriving in that time frame?

  15. Crap joke for the day:

A bloke goes to a female dentist to have a tooth extracted.
As she produced a large syringe to give him an anaesthetic shot , the bloke
    protested,
“Sorry, no way, no needles! I just hate needles!”
So she started to hook up the nitrous oxide tank, but again he said,
“No, no, I can’t do the gas thing either. Just the thought of having
a mask on my face suffocates me!”
The dentist then asked if he had any objections
    to taking pills.
“No problem at all,” he said, “I’m fine with pills.”
So the dentist gave him two little blue pills which he swallowed promptly,
    “What are those?” he asked.
    “Viagra,” she replied casually.
“I’ll be damned,” said the patient, “I didn’t know Viagra
    worked as a pain killer.”
“Actually it doesn’t,” said the dentist, “But it will give you something
to hold on to when I pull your tooth out .. .”

  16. We saw two movies over the weekend.
Avengers – which was fun and I quite enjoyed, and Paddington Bear. Hubby and I were amoung those who use to watch PB when we were younger. We both sighed wistfully when Paddington got his coat.

  17. Ill be a few weeks late on the Avengers bandwagon but such is the life.

Garys in the park and you know Ill be waiting for you…

  18. We saw Avengers over the weekend and we all had a good time. Given the impossible task of trying to make sense of such a large cast of characters, I think Whedon did a good job of making it work. My few minor quibbles would be the shear number of fighting montages. The fights start to feel like more spectacle than action that advances the plot. And … minor spoiler…
At the end of Iron Man 3, Tony destroys his lab and all his suits, basically telling Pepper he is retiring. In Avengers 2 he shows up completely suited up, with an even bigger army of robots and Pepper is “busy running the business.” There was no attempt to explain why he was back to 100%. I don’t necessarily find that a problem for Avengers, but it feels like Marvel almost intended Iron Man 4 to happen before Avengers 2 to explain what happened.

    • Not a spoiler: I actually didn’t recognize Andy Serkis – – he looked more like Jason Newstead while he was onscreen. He’s apparently going to be a big deal in later films.

  19. Catchup post. Here’s my flight itinerary:

    Flying Southwest Airlines (As always)
Arriving Saturday morning at 10:00 AM PHX time
Leaving Monday evening at 4:45 PM

Not currently planning on renting a car, but am open to it if the group needs another one.

  20. Mike Huckabee in the news always reminds me of a former co-worker who is his sister-in-law and all of the horrible business dinners I had to endure with her.

  21. You guys know I love me some Joss Whedon, but it looks like he’s had another tantrum.

No link from my phone , but Google about him quitting twitter

    • I haven’t read anything yet, but I can’t blame anyone for quitting the caustic universe that Twitter sometimes turns into.

        • Probably an inflammatory word choice. He has “quit Twitter” before.

I really don’t blame him for that, but do find the criticism he’s getting from some feminist takes on the film interesting.

          • Yeah. I feel for him. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Personally, I think the complaints have gotten ridiculous.

          • Whedon has done some great work in balancing and promoting feminist issues within Hollywood, despite the overwhelming indifferent and misogynistic forces that have worked against him. I personally loved the love interest storyline. And the damsel-in-distress scene really wasn’t. I think plenty of people missed the sly reference to the Bechdel Test that was snuck into the party scene early in the movie. Some people are just fanatics and have no sense of nuance. To rail against Whedon for perceived “femenist” failings in Avengers 2 is not only short-sighted, it is beyond petty.

Of course, the comicbook fandom screed isn’t much better.

          • Sometimes folks on the left take their hyper-PC-vigilance to extreme levels, which is just as damaging as FoxNews hyper-fear-mongering.

    • I shouldn’t comment without knowing anything. . . but according to the one FB post I saw on this last night:

There’s been a lot of nerd rage about presumed sexist treatment of Black Widow in the new movie, which manifested in threats and verbal attacks against him on Twitter – – so he closed his account.

      • I did a quick search of the nets and it looks like he was being criticized for under utilizing Black Widow and her *spoiler* … being the Hulk’s love interest.
I don’t equate those things with him being “misogynist”. I chalk that up to internet hyperbole. I would have liked to see a bigger role for the Black Widow, but I think it was amazing that any of the Avengers got face time when there are 437 members.

  22. I tried looking at this trailer and assessing whether or not I can really dig what they are trying to accomplish with the mixture of puppetry and CGI. However, about 2/3 through it, I was overwhelmed with the feeling of “Holy Shit! Ed Asner is still alive!”.

  23. Finished Daredevil. Extremely impressed tho the finale seemed unnecessarily rushed. Small quibble tho fo an overwhelmingly great first season.

  24. For the non FB DPers.

The Tour around the Highland Park distillery was interesting but the 12 year old whisky was wasted on me.

  25. So, within hours of his attorney announcing he will sue Darren Wilson over the shooting death of Michael Brown, the guy who was with Brown when he was shot is arrested by Ferguson police for being seen “allegedly tossing drugs”.
    Really?
If this was a TV show, it would be canceled for having such unbelievable cliche’ writing.

    • Yep, it’s gonna be big one. Martin Freeman was just announced, though nobody knows what his part is gong to be.

Interesting that William Hurt is reprising his roll from The Incredible Hulk.

          • My confusion. I was thinking of The Hulk (2003). But, that was Sam Elliot, not William Hurt. I would have been shocked if they had recognized the existence of The Hulk, not The Incredible Hulk. Too many Feakin’ movies to keep track of.

          • Now THAT I would have been shocked as well. I think ‘Hulk 2003’ made Marvel AngLee.

            I mean angry

  26. Sorry EssBee, seems the judge threw that woman’s lawsuit out of court.
There goes your chance to go to court and scream “You want the truth?” “YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH” .
    😆

  27. we just finished watching the documentary, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck. It was fascinating, overall, especially the downward spiral his life took, as overtly evident by his own artwork and journal writing. It’s available on HBO, for those of you interested.

    What a sad story.

Be Kind, Everyone. Be Humane. Live Life. Love.

    so say we all.

  28. Morning Pan

The daughter of one of hubby’s teachers was hit by a drunk driver earlier in the week. Her memorial is this afternoon. It’s a bit of a whiplash going to such a down beat thing this afternoon, then doing the exact opposite this evening with Spamalot.

    • What awful news!
I hate drunk drivers. They are truly an unnecessary evil that is completely controlled (or not) by our human psyche.

  29. So Age of Ultron scared the hell out of me for the first 30 minutes. I was petrified that this was going to be the Iron Man 2 of the Avengers. Thank god it got better

      • There was no real ‘moment’ persay, more of just the feeling that it was just over-bloated and stuffed. But like I said it reversed course quite nicely. That and the whole SPOILERISH way Ultron just kind of turned bad for no reason pissed me off. This being said its a fact that there is about an hour of important footage that was cut for the theater release. The upcoming blu-ray release (which will be the entire 3 – 3 1/2 hour film) should really expand on that story as well as a few other storylines they really had to trim

  30. Sitting at the playhouse. Show isn’t starting for another half hour. However, the playbill says they are doing Young Frankenstein in 2016. I know what we’re seeing next spring.

  31. Last Orkney post:

A pub in Kirkwall called Helgi had a nice variation on the fuzzy duck cocktail.

Malibu was used instead of usual rum (and yeah I know malibu is just coconut flavoured rum)

It didn’t taste of booze at all, yum.

It was however embarrassing to order.

…and why salt on the rim when you are supposed to drink it using a straw..

  32. A simple explanation on the recent General election for US viewers of GOT:

@theletterzed: For American viewers: The wildlings voted SNP, the South thought Joffrey was doing a great job so want another 5 years. The North remembers.

  33. So here’s my obligatory and meaningless rankings of the Marvel properties so far…

    1 The Avengers
    2 Iron Man
    3 Daredevil S1
4 Captain America: The Winter Soldier
    5 Avengers: Age of Ultron
    6 Agent Carter S1
    7 Guardians of the Galaxy
    8 Agents of SHEILD S2
    9 Thor
10 Captain America: The First Avenger
    11 Agents of SHEILD S1
    12 Iron Man 3
    13 Thor: The Dark World
    14 Agents of SHEILD S1
    15 Iron Man 2
    16 The Incredible Hulk

    • OOOPS! Lets try again

      1 The Avengers
      2 Iron Man
      3 Daredevil S1
4 Captain America: The Winter Soldier
      5 Avengers: Age of Ultron
      6 Agent Carter S1
      7 Guardians of the Galaxy
      8 Agents of SHEILD S2
      9 Thor
10 Captain America: The First Avenger
      11 Iron Man 3
      12 Thor: The Dark World
      13 Agents of SHEILD S1
      14 Iron Man 2
      15 The Incredible Hulk

      • As I look at this list I flashed back to the 1990s. I started getting into comic books and was steadily purchasing Witchblade, Razor, Evil Ernie, The Maxx, The Tick, etc. Every week I could afford a few comic books and keep up with the stream. Then crossovers and spinoffs started piling up and suddenly every week there was a Witchblade, a Witchblade crossover (e.g., Witchblade/Spawn, Witchblade/Darkness, Witchblade/Wolverine, Witchblade/Electra), a Razor crossover, A Razor or Witchblade spinnoff (e.g., Razor Burn, Tales of Witchblade) and before I knew it there was more content than I could keep up with, let alone afford and I stopped collecting altogether. With all the Marvel TV series coming out I feel like we’re hitting that point again. I can handle the stream of movies fine, but then you throw at least 3 TV series into the mix and I just don’t have the resources to keep up unless I become really dedicated to watching Marvel all the freakin’ time.

  34. Morning Pan

Only a few days left. Today I’m going to stay home and pretend giant white flakes are falling from the sky.
Tomorrow I’ll go to the bank and get some US currency…At a stupid exchange rate *sigh*

  35. Copy from my Facebook post because I like to be thorough:
    – Saturday afternoon-evening –
I’m hosting a gala event at my house. Or… ya know.. a laid back BBQ party.
Whenever you’d like to arrive my house is open to you.
My kids will be departing at some point during the day to spend the night at their dad’s, but may be there during the daylight.
I’ll be providing Burgers, Dogs, Buns, and Beans (of the pinto/pork variety.)
I’ll also have a decent condiment spread accompaniment, sodas, some beers, and a fully stocked liquor cabinet (courtesy of LostRalph.)
Locals and/or those of you visiting who wish to wander aimlessly through the aisles of the local stores, please feel free to consider it a potluck of sorts and bring whatever shivers your timbers or suits your fancy as far as drinks and food items go. Let me know, also, if there is anything you’d like me to have on hand as I am going shopping and I actually enjoy being prepared in advance.
I have a snowball microphone (if we want to record,) CAH – The Bigger Blacker Box now, other games and an outdoor firepit thingie if you want to roast marshmallows? I don’t know… I can pretty much provide ANY movie…
Please note: Designated Drivers get extra hugs and kisses for keeping our beloved pannites safe smile emoticon

  36. Crap joke for the day:

A few weeks ago I walked past a German delicatessen when a giant sausage leapt out n attacked me.
Now every time I walk past the place – I fear the wurst…

  37. Okay I’m looking at the times of the flight.

The flight from heathrow to phoenix is the same length as previous years.

It leaves slightly early from London but gets in almost an hour earlier in Phoenix.

I haven’t heard of Arizona implementing DST, so I’m puzzled how it due in that early at your end.

    I’ll keep a look out for a portal…

  38. Wisdom from Twitter:

@justabloodygame: Girl, are you the Bible? ‘Cause men keep misinterpreting what you say to support their own selfish agendas.

  39. How to know you are evil No. 234:

Beating a teenager to grab the front seat of the train that has just become available.

  40. Two more days (for me at least) til the Mmmmeeetup! Torn between being really excited and the frustration that comes with filling the next two days with all of my Friday work. The job isn’t normally like this. Just a bad combination of deadlines. Oh the joy!

  41. So Steven Tyler has been wanting to make a country album.
The radio is now playing the his first song.

It is so, so, so bad.

    • I’ve been hearing about this. While I’m looking forward to it, the promo may have been too long and given away too much.

      • I’m OK with a superhero show that doesn’t have to be full of angst and self loathing. I’ve seen the post that suggested this was a “real” version of the Black Widow SNL skit, but I think that’s unfair.

People complain that it’s full of tropes as though everything else we’re watching isn’t somehow.

  42. Picked up an assorted 12 pack of beers from Florida to bring to the MMMeeeetup. Not sure how many are mass marketed in Phoenix, but I’m sure some will be new to the group.

  43. Gonna miss you all this weekend! Lo and I may be having a mini mmmeetup to toast you all tomorrow!

It is Sly B and my 16th anniversary this weekend and we are headed out of town for a micro-celebration!

  44. I did set off the body scanner, though. It said I had something on my ankle. After a quick pat down on my leg, they just shrugged and sent me on my way. It was all very strange

    • Those machines work on detecting “thickness” of things on top of your skin. If the sensitivity of the machine is set really high it will alarm for things like rolled up (or thick) cuffs on pants or (in my case) rolled up sleeves.

  45. And everyone who can’t make it will be missed. Cynful, JustaJ0e, Lo Pan, EssBee, T-Cat, Jason C: we hope to hear from you during the weekend! Maybe we can set up a Skype thing at Cj’s on Saturday?

    • And Cynful..

I had no idea so many people were not coming I will miss you all very much and can definitely set up escape or actually a Google hangout would be better for then we could see everybody’s faces.

  46. I am going to get in the shower so that I smell fresh for my bunny. However, I really do stink at remembering to look at the Internet if its not Facebook. But I will try to remember to check the page.

  47. Well, we can still join in silly chit-chat here. I’d intended the new thread to be MMMmmmeetup-related stuff, but I don’t want anyone to feel constrained. Post that link to the funny Onion article there, if you feel so inclined.
