  1. VAN!!!!!

OK, I think the file is fixed. Apologies to those of you whose podcatchers downloaded the screwy file.

Our night shift hasn’t seen Nomad Scry’s witty in a little while. hmmmmm

    Goodnight Tom.

  2. Finished the new Wheel of Time last night. It was a welcome return and full of movement. It really feels like the series is moving toward a conclusion now.

  3. Lo Pan does not feel magically delicious this morning. Curse this earth and the libations it doth produce. Lo Pan will unwind now with this fine Deadpan podcast Lo Pan has just stumbled across…

  4. Lo Pan begs of you to no longer include “sittin on the toilet” in anything ever again. Lo Pan is not used to begging.
Lo Pan is also not used to finding dead hookers in Lo Pan’s closet either, but that is neither here nor here.

  5. *ZING*!

Lo Pan enjoys Faux News. All the best news comes from there. When Lo Pan first came to this cursed earth, Lo Pan would watch this news program and become confused on why, when Lo Pan stepped outside, the world was a much different one than the world Faux News was describing. Lo Pan really enjoys good fiction.

  6. Ming….gling? Thats Lo.

Ming the Meaningless is a charlatan and a hack and Lo Pan has no time for other bad caricatures of eastern civilizations.

  7. “Also, i am now dating a midget and she fits nicely on the steering wheel desk which allows us to experiment sexually while driving. This thing is like WD-40 or duct tape, it is a million and one uses! ”

    LO! PAN! APPPPPROOOOOOVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Glad everyone liked that comment. There are some other ones there, but I think that one is the best.

One major deadline down, so things might improve a bit for the rest of the year. Fortunately, I’m being forced to take next week off so I’ll have some time to recuperate before things get crazy next month.

  9. Good news from ditto is always. . . um. . . good news. . .

JohnBoze, if you got the music, then you probably had some audio clippage during the Duel. Audacity fixed one thing, only to break another, it seems.

Van, I’m humbled by your concern, but I don’t expect the format change to be too too severe or to alienate the old crew. Sorry to be all-dramatic-and-shit about this. . . . I will explain my idea in the next episode, and welcome your suggestions and feedback.

  10. Ed, my brother-out-law said that the WOT book was awesome, but as a fanatic he felt like he could tell the parts written by B.S. versus those written by R.J.

I CANNOT WAIT to dig into the book. But I’m re-reading Acacia right now so I can read it’s book 2, The Other Lands. That’s first.

Okay – I really should not be here while at work.

    *zooooom*

  11. Lo Pan’s blackend heart also swells of Lejon’s good news. Well done.

Also, Lo Pan enjoys ditto making train sounds.

Also, Lo Pan must nourish Lo Pan’s soul now.

    Also, Lo Pan will eat.

Also, Lo Pan will no longer say “also”.

  12. dingey? not dingy.. I’m clean.. shoot… now I have to go look it up.

ok.. nope, dingy and dingy are spelled the same.

    dingy [?d??i]

    1. mod.
loony; giddy. : That friend of yours sure does act dingy sometimes. <– that's me.. I'm that friend.

  13. Do the hamster-people get to crap all over the floor too? Because really.. that’s the most disturbing thing that comes to mind…

I wonder if they have clear Plexiglas tubes to run through.. they could go to other parts of the hotel and visit other hamsters’ sleepstacks… I’m thinking this isn’t a good idea.

  14. Hi Essbee!

JB – What you get when you cross Streisand with a Rapper ?

Lo Pan – I think Van has something for that.

    CJ – thhhat’s thwell !

    Jack – be nimble

Amy – Skype spelled sideways is peSky

  15. ooh, the cute weather lady reports a 100% chance of rain today. Of course, it’s raining right now, so I think she made a pretty safe bet.

  16. And, happy Friday to everyone! What a week it’s been at Evil.

I tried to watch Babel last night, and got bored after 15 minutes.

I’ve already worked out, and the coffee is hot. Off to shower and get ready to tackle this last work day of the week.

    Have a great day!

  17. I had a dream last night and Evo was there. At a con and not a whit of psychological weirdness. Considering the at a con bit, it could almost have been a memory, we were sitting around waiting for something to happen.

  18. I think I today deserve the dumbass of the day award. I managed some how to smash my bony right middle finger between the top 2 drawers of a horizontal file cabinet. I’m so f-ing glad it is Friday. I use the letter I to much and it hurts to type i’s. also with deer hunting starting this weekend it should be a light day

  19. Funny what one discovers wiki-ing about. I did not know the “Doctor’s Daughter” from the Doctor Who episode of the same name was in fact the doctor’s daughter, well the fifth doctor’s daughter, anyhow, and one of the Trillians’ daughter as well…

  20. I like being in on days when no one is here. after i get the daily stuff done I’m pretty much done for the day. Maybe i can clean this place up a bit…

  21. Friday’s are usually pretty quiet in my workplace, anyway. I can usually be done everything by 8:00. However, on the 20th of each month I do some interoffice stuff that involves myself, my Ontario office and my US counterparts.

Assuming I can find suitable replacements for those who are out of the office, I still expect to be done my work for the day within the hour.

  22. I’ll be spending a significant amount of time at work this weekend. Mostly, I’ll be on hand to monitor a printing system as we serialize barcodes on 15,000 cd’s. Therefore it will be a fine time to catch up on some video watching, and very likely doing further writing on that novel…

  23. I worked at a place where one of the guys like to dabbled in Access databases and he was pretty good. we used His db for tracking calls so we could tell sales men of high volume callers to push classes. the funny thing was after he added call time we could tell (after 3 years of data) how many calls we would get on any given day or hour. Monday and Friday where always light but Wednesday we got slammed with calls. The curve when graphing it was amazing (if you are a stat geek) the daily dip was kinda cool to peak at 9am and another at 2pm. the one that always annoyed me the most was the spike at 4:30 on Friday. we started tracking how many of them said “I’ve been working on this all week (or day)…” nearly 100%

  24. Jejon, I bet the most familiar is the 4:30 I’ve been working on this all day/week call. I hate that call. 4/5 of the time if they would have called earlier it would have been a 5 minute call but after messing with it I now have to fix everything they screwed up plus the original issue

  25. I’m currently listening to Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. I’m not sure yet, but I think this book may be responsible for everything wrong with America. I’ll with hold final judgment until I get to the end.

  26. Casting Call!

I have two speaking parts in Episodes 10 and 11 of “The Questors from Effpiem” that haven’t been cast yet. Both parts are male, and both are villains. The Supervisor of Surveillance is kind of like one of the admirals from Star Wars (except no accent is required), and Dolucor is the leader of a squad of fighters.

I would like to invite anyone from the Deadpan community who hasn’t already had a part in “Questors” to play these roles. Newbies, oldbies, and anywhere in between, you’re all welcome to volunteer.

If you’re interested, please send me an e-mail at: (my last name)1138 AT Yahoo DOT com.

  27. Lejon, that would be awesome!!! When I worked the call center I tried take all my 1/2 days and appointments with sales people on Wednesdays. Sales people tended to do more work work Wednesday also so it was easy to do.

  28. I appreciate Todd Rundgren’s subtle juxtaposition between dual, dueling perceptions of work and play when he follows up the line,

    “I don’t want to work
I just want to bang on the drum all day”,

    with’

    “I don’t want to play
I just want to bang on the drum all day”,

thus indicating that perhaps the distinction between work and play is not as clearly defined as it seems, and that it ought to be any free-thinker’s goal to create a harmonious union of the two concepts.

At least I think that’s the message he was going for with that song.

  29. Lo Pan appreciates the subtle Jack Mangan juxtaposition of the subtle Rundgren juxtaposition pertaining to playing, working, and drumming., and the underlying distinctions thereof.

    Lo. Pan. Approved.

  30. My hubby works with kids of approx 10 – 13. Guess what movie we’ve been hearing about all week that comes out today.

When the first one came out, hubby made us see it just so he could stay up on what the kids were watching. I’m really, really, REALLY, hoping he doesn’t expect the same of me this year… I think I feel a cold coming on 😆

  31. JOe, hilarious book review – thanks! I’ve been following Andrew Sullivan’s obsession w/ Palin for some time now. I think he’d love that review.

  32. I was told once that I was in a carefully controlled mid life crisis.

New Moon was oh so terrible, but the reactions of sister during the movie were fun to mock.

  33. I am sorry! Vanamonde, Vanamonde, Vanamonde.

I had a dream last night and Vanamonde was there. At a con and not a whit of psychological weirdness. Considering the at a con bit, it could almost have been a memory, we were sitting around waiting for something to happen.

  34. Saw New Moon last night at the midnight showing.

terrible does not do the horribleness of this movie justice.

    This movie was treacherously godawful.

The audience was indeed fun. The scenery was nice and one of the leading men is a little hottie – but seriously, I want a boyfriend that can turn into a big mean wolf and protect me.. *swoooon*

Otherwise.. the acting was.. wait.. no nevermind.. there was no acting. It was HORRIBLE! bleh.

  35. “Former Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne Cheney, welcomed their seventh grandchild, Sarah Lynne Cheney, Wednesday, November 18, 2009. She weighed 6 lbs., 14 oz and was born at 8:17 A.M. at Sibley Hospital in Washington, D.C. Her parents are the Cheney’s daughter Mary and her partner, Heather Poe.”

  36. I have conflicting music running through my head.

I’ve got the creepy Palm Pre commercial’s background music for a few minutes, then it switches to Dexter’s theme music… Geez, if I could just get something else viral into my head to knock them out… Maybe a Swine Flu Rap?

  37. I had the lyrics to “Sentient 6” going through my head earlier, but I as able to excise it by posting the lyrics to the complete song to Facebook.

  38. Gah, now I have Nevermore stuck in my head.

Lejon, Dexter had come so highly recommended, I finally watched seasons 1 & 2. Both were excellent. Season 1’s final 6-or-so episodes were fantastic.

  39. I love Dexter also. I still have a “huh?” feeling about the serial killer in N.A., but I think it is a very smart show. I love Deborah Morgan’s character. I wish I could talk like that at work.

  40. 6:44am here. I think this is going to be one of those weekends where I’ll wonder why I didn’t go to work. Lot’s o chore’s this weekend.

  41. A close relative wants to get me a game for 360 or PS3 this year for Xmas.

Any suggestions to what’s good (the last game I bought was the Namco collection of old games)?

Not interested in RPGs, more action orientated.

  42. Today I get to spend the day with my grandmother. She wants to buy a laptop so I’m going with her to make sure she doesn’t get fleeced.

Tomorrow we’re going to see 2012, then we’re going to visit a friend to pick up a couple of pieces of art he did.

We are getting this piece of cover art (book also written by a friend), plus another piece (that Dan doesn’t seem to have on his site). We have a number of his pieces on our office walls.

    http://www.djostudio.com/

    Exciting times.

  43. OK, I’m dating myself here, but when TEB mentioned that “WP” doesn’t like… the first thing I thought was “Why the hell is anyone still using Word Perfect?” It took me a minute to even come up with wordpress.

  44. Dan suggested the new Halo ODST and seconded Bunny’s suggestion of Modern Warfare.

Depending on the person, and I know these have been around a while, but I like all of the Viva Pinata games. I also love Worms Armageddon. They aren’t RPG’s and they can be played in short bursts.

  45. In terms of gaming…
I haven’t picked up Dragon Age yet, though I will. Instead, at a friend’s behest, I’ve started playing Borderlands on the PS3. I’m enjoying it a lot so far. Essentially, it is a FPS RPG. And I really like the graphics style. Think of an animated Mad Max with a better sense of humor and you won’t be far off.

  46. Came up with a nice meal plan for the week, so I’m going to have some fun cooking. The traditional turkey for Thanksgiving, which I do very well if I do say so myself, Prime Rib, and Beef Wellington are on the menu. If you drop in, I’m sure there will be plenty to go around. 🙂

  47. Dating yourself means at the end of the night when you wind up having sex with yourself it’s more like a plan and less like a disappointment.

  48. Or dating yourself means wasting $50 on a solo run to dinner and a movie before the fabled 10 minutes surfing the naughtier bits of the web.

  49. I find I have a bit of an adjustment going into an RPG after a few years of FPS gaming. I remember having this same problem when I started playing KOTOR after a good six years of Quake.

But, having played KOTOR before, Dragon Age is quickly growing to feel familiar. I sense a time vacuum for me these next few weeks.

  50. I told myself I wasn’t going to go to bed until I was caught up with NaNoWriMo. Well, now I am. I’m up to 36,710 words. I just wrote 6,494 words in a little over six hours. Whoa.

    Night, Pan.

  51. Morning Pan!

Saw 2012 on the weekend and I liked it.

It was a disaster movie in the vein of Towering Inferno, Posiden Adventure, Earthquake, etc.

True it was silly, over the top in its destruction, and totally unrealistic. But hey, sometimes you need that in a movie.

  52. TEB – would you concur with the following conversation that I overheard?

    1) “I’m going to see 2012”
    2) “It’s a fun movie. I think you’ll like it.”
    1) “Oh you’ve seen it. So it’s good?”
    2) “I didn’t say it was good, I said it was fun.”

  53. Also finished the new Terry Pratchett book, Unseen Academicals. To be honest, it wasn’t overly impressed. I guess it was ok. Even a bad Pratchett book is usually pretty good, but it wasn’t up to the standards of many of his others.

    At least in my opinion.

  54. Good Morning, Pan!

It’s too early for witty banter… and it’s Monday, so this week is already off to a bad start.

VIDEO GAMES – I’m only looking forward to one, and it’s not out for a while.

    DIABLO III

I’ll be lucky if I have time to play it when it does come out.

  55. Good read, J0e. Thanks.

Yet, OUR EMPLOYEES in government fight Obama to maintain the broken system, either because of blind partisan prejudice or because of lobbyist bribes.

Oh well, Sarah Palin will fix all of this in 2012. *shudder*

  56. Hi pan!

Just finished making homemade season salt. Way better than the bought stuff. Now, I think I’ll kick back and get some reading done. Or take a nap. 🙂

  57. … and I thought I was clueless on the PREVIOUS broken lyrics!

BTW – I only owned TMBG’s “John Henry” for about 6 weeks before some soulless scoundrel stole it from me 🙁
So that is my excuse for not recognizing the “Kill Kill Kill” lyrics.

Why I never bought a replacement copy of the CD ???? For that I have no excuse.

  58. ???????????????? ????????? ???????????????????? ????????????????????????????????????????????????? ????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????? ?????????????????????????? ???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  59. omfg…. and anagram for “Lo Pan” is “Plano”.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHMYGODWHYWHYWHYWHYWHYWHYWHYTEXASNOBAHBAHBAHBAHBAHANDOHHGODWHY!!!!

  60. H’lo, Pan! hope your afternoon is going well.

    Meat with salt.
    Salt with meat.
    Meat with meat.
    Salt with salt.
Salt with Garlic and onions… And meat.
Meat with garlic, onions, salt, celery, carrots… and potatoes.
Potatoes with garlic, butter, salt, sour cream, and beef gravy.

    Somehow, I’m feeling a bit peckish… I can’t say why…

  61. #1 December 15, 1992 New York City
    #2 March 8, 1994 Cleveland, OH
    #3 June 16, 1991 London, England

The release dates are for the albums, and cut&pasted direct from Wikipedia, so I assure you they are correct this time, as far as I know.

  62. Wow.
Fox News Threatens Pink Slips For On-Screen Errors
    http://bit.ly/7Rtp8e

I will believe this when I see it (or stop seeing it, or whatever) but just announcing it shows that at least management at FAUX understands that outside their faithful … they have lost all credibility.

  63. For #1 a SINGLE (not this song) from the same album peaked at #25 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart.

For #2 the ALBUM peaked at 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.

For #3 a SINGLE (not this song) from the same album was #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart for 4 weeks

  64. Hail, Deadpan.

I walk around my neighborhood regularly to get some exercise. Yesterday, I’m already seeing lights up, and ON on several houses.

I enjoy the decorations and stuff as much as anybody, but come on!

  65. Ed, we put ours up last week but we never turn them on till the day after turkey day. we wouldn’t have even put them up till than but we had 50 in November, couldn’t pass that up.

  66. They’re up and on around here too, of course reaper and I are in a region where snow can come at any time and you want to get them up in mid-november.

  67. I’m here. Just sort of ghosting.

    Lots of work today.

Also, the next door neighbour had their brand new Jeep stolen from their driveway sometime during the night so we’ve had the questions of whether or not we heard anything, etc. – which we didn’t.

  68. I just realized how well the last one went together so, just for the record:

    Goodbye – George Hrab
I’m Easy – David Lee Roth
Going for a Ride – Serenity Soundtrack
Papa Gene’s Blues – The Monkees

    Quite the coincidence, honest 😉

  69. And who gave him 500MILLIONDOLLARS to make a CG/Live action ass fest? BAH!!!! Avatar looks fucking terrible. 500MILLIONFUCKINGDOLLARS???????????????? For a movie???? FUCKING FUCKBABIES!

  70. Bunny, I’m more distraught about the DLR on your iPod 😉

LP: Linda Hamilton took half of everything James C. had. I suppose that’s what it took to end his 10 year vacation from movie-making.

Still, I don’t think the guy’s ever made a bad movie. I haven’t watched the Avatar previews, don’t know the old cartoon, but I expect to go see the nw movie. You apparently have stronger feelings about this than I do, however….

  71. OH! BTW… M. Night Shamalamadingdong is making the new movie based on the cartoon of Avatar… called The Last Airbender. I know..confusing.

  72. Okay, I promised bigger clues before I record the new BLC, so here goes…

    1) The previously mentioned charting single (the one that is not the song you are looking for) was a song about a guy who has misplaced something important.

    2) Jack got this one right

    3) This band is led by a former member of an influential punk band.

Yeah, the clues are still abstract. Makes for a game which is more fun…

  73. Chiming in on Avatar:

Follow with me, if you will –

For the low low price of $0.5 Billion you and your respective corporations (not just 1 corporation is funding this, there are several) will receive a James Cameron spectacle that will rival profits from some of his other works, such as the #1 grossing movie of all time TITANIC.

The man has not lost money on films. Very rarely does he make a really “bad” one. He knows how to put one together, so I’m thinking that the money he’s getting is probably just a drop in the bucket of what the film will take world wide.

  74. Dearest Lejon,

There is no way the world wants another CGI alien “fish out of water” movie so bad that they’ll pony up half a billion dollars just to break the film even. I don’t think it will necessarily be bad, but you’re talking money of Titanic (cough) proportions just to break this thing even. NA GA DA.

    Spadoinkle.

  75. 1) Something by King Missile
    2) I knew it!
    3) Something by PIL

    ??

Cool about the forums, Lejon! A word of warning: Those pphbphbpbphhpbphpbhpb sites have been known to attract spam, if the admins aren’t vigilant.

  76. Lo Pan: Actually, it wouldn’t have to do as well as Titanic ($1.8BILLION worldwide). They’d probably settle for Spider-man 2 numbers ($0.79Billion Worldwide). I’m thinking that they’ll do better than Spidey 2, though. Probably hit in the range of Jurassic Park ($0.92Billion Worldwide).

It has the advertising, it has James Cameron’s name… It has cute cuddly aliens (and simulated aliens…) – Seriously, people are just gullible enough to buy the premise for the second time this year…

  77. Looks like Jack is adding to the clues, but beware, he is on one right track and one wrong track, I’m just not gonna say which is which.

  78. I think the problem, lovely Lejon, is that movies like Spiderman were already household names and had a track record to back them up. Plus Jurassic had dinos which appeal to every age group. I know this has Camerons name attached to it but I just think this is much too niche to make assloads of cash. But yeah, the world’s gullibility never ceases to amaze. I feel you on that.

  79. You know, I can understand wanting to get the lights hung while the weather is good. But can we refrain our itchy fingers from flipping the switch until Friday? please?

  80. Ed: Ooh! You have “Kiew Mission” by Tangerine Dream! I do, too! 🙂 I bought it for my trip to Epcot back in April. Turns out that that album makes great music for sci-fi novel-writing as well. 🙂

  81. The PC Engine/Turbographix version of Space Harrier is rather good…even if the sampled audio makes the announcer sound like he has a cold…that could be the emulator though.

    Back to the fantasy zone..

  82. Good to know that our Amy is much tougher than Tasha Yar 🙂

The in of my checking will be sporadic at best these next few days. So, I hope you all have a safe long weekend. Be thankful for something wherever you are.

  83. Melissa waitress Supernova Sing

I like this meme it reminds me how much music i have that i will never listen to so i should just delete it…
seriously Benny Goodman and Allman brothers flanking Live and Powerman 5000. i like classical, rock, near country, some pop and some other weird stuff. I’m so glad iTunes has a skip count so I at lest don’t feel like i didn’t give it a chance.

  84. Well. . . . . I’m heading home in a little bit to play Adventure. If that doesn’t take up my entire evening, I’ll release the next Deadpan episode tonight.

Badass Thxgiving wishes to everyone in the U.S.
    Happy Thursday to everyone elsewhere.

  85. evening pan, sitting down with a Leinenkugel, fireside nut brown. it is pretty good. I remember as a kid drinking Leinie’s because it was like Blatz… cheep. glad they turned it around!! Go Wi Beer.

  86. artists are just about as good this time
    akon johnny led Alice
any one want to guess the full name of the songs…
ya I’m boarded and we did meet the nipple goal already…

  87. Dead Pan, best ride at the never land ranch…
Dead Pan, Drier than a popcorn fart…
i think i just have to call in. the mic i have been trying sound like shit and I an’t get it to sound even ok.

  88. evening pan, win pies are done turkey is “unthawed”(as they like to say in Wisconsin ,God I hate that as much as the word bubbler). turkey day is ready! hope all goes well it is our first thanks giving alone.
